Home gel nail advice

I was bought a cheapie gel nail kit a couple of years ago (gellure) and I'd like to invest in something a bit better. My lamp takes 2 minutes and I think a lot of the new ones are quicker. Also the gellure colours are a bit variable - I've wasted money on a few duds that either don't apply well or are vastly different from the shade shown online. Any recommendations?
Also, is it possible to repair gels if you damage one? I cut my thumb nail on a serrated knife last night and a bit has peeled off. Can I just apply into the gap and cure?
Thanks.

I think 2 mins is pretty quick, isn't it?

I just repair with a bit of gel and cure it- lasts another 3 days or so.

Fluffycloud is expert nail mumsnetter...

My friend has a 30 second one but I'm not sure if it's a different type. She's on holiday or I would ask her. I know it's not a huge difference but I'm always in a rush!
I will have a go at a repair while awaiting Fluffycloud then, thanks!

Sensationail is great, sell online and at boots

Flutterbye · 31/01/2017 19:03

Yes, I've got the Sensational LED one too (15s for clear coats, 30s for colour). I do my own each week (never lasts longer than that even from a salon). They've often got a deal on for £35 incl all the starter set so don't need to pay full price.

CantChoose · 31/01/2017 19:04

Oh that sounds like a bargain flutterbye! I've seen good things about sensationali elsewhere too I think. Any colours that are especially lovely?

Does the primer go on before the base coat? My gellure set doesn't have a primer step.

They have many colours to chose from. I get at least a week and a half from mine, but i do apply the primer to my entire nail. The Facebook page has lots of hints and tips too.

shepardspie · 31/01/2017 19:10

Gel cleanser, primer, base coat, colour, top coat then gel cleanser to finish x

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 31/01/2017 19:18

My LED lamp has 15,30,60 and 180 settings. So if I get the Sensational gel will that work fast?

shepardspie · 31/01/2017 19:19

15 seconds for base and top coat, and 30 sec for colour.

Have just realised I sound like a salesperson for the company!

CantChoose · 31/01/2017 19:20

Thanks Shepard, I've just watched a video of how to do it. It looks slightly easier than my current setup actually.
It's nearly my birthday so I might send a link to my DH... there's an offer on at boots ATM.
