Do you tip the hairdresser (how much?)

Just had fab new haircut as haven't been to hairdressers for 6mnths and looking like Winnie the Witch. Cost £43 cut and colour, gave her £45 and said keep the change. She gave a funny look. Did I do wrong?

No, I don't tip my hairdresser at all. No one tips me for doing my job!

Tinker · 26/02/2007 13:33

Always tip my hairdresser. Just do, feel a meanie if I don't. Don't go every 6 weeks so don't get too worked up about it.

MamaG · 26/02/2007 13:33

I tend to tip if its a good cut, and tip the young hair washing girl too

bewilderbeast · 26/02/2007 14:09

always 10 to 15% depending how happy I am with the cut

WideWebWitch · 26/02/2007 14:11

I usually leave £10 on a £100 cut and colour, so 10%. But only if I'm very happy (which I mostly am)

DizzyBint · 26/02/2007 14:13

no i do not. i have yet to have a hair cut i'm actually pleased with.

pucca · 26/02/2007 14:13

I usually round it up, i normally just have a cut £7.50 so just give a tenner.

I am a hairdresser myself (not at mo though) and used to hate meanies, especially when i was a trainee! people always forget the trainee who washes your hair and makes you a drink, who is on £50 a weeks for 40 hrs!

Skribble · 26/02/2007 14:21

I tend to look at it from the point of earnings, if the cut cost £45 I think the hairdresser is earning enough. Same goes for taxi drivers, they are not poor by my standards.

Perhaps it is because I have never really worked in a job where I got tips. I tip waiting staff as they are usually p/t and low paid, if my hairdresser had a trainee perhaps I would tip her, at the moment I round it up by a pound for the hairdresser as she is on her own running her own place and doesn't overcharge.

£100 for a hairdo, perhaps if I had the money for that I would be able to tip more .

Anyway I look at it as- Do they earn less than me and did they give good service.

pucca · 26/02/2007 14:33

Skribble...That is wrong as often the stylist just works for a set wage no matter how many clients she has, if it is the salon owner doing your hair then fair enough.

Skribble · 26/02/2007 15:50

She may weel be on a set wage but she will be earning more then me anyway ,

I sit there in my ancient Matalan/ supermarket clothes and they have all the latest fancy gear on so I don't exactly feel guilty, perhaps once I am earning enough to enable me to dress and feed my family the way I would like to then I will worry about the taxi driver and hairdressers family .

MrsSpoon · 26/02/2007 15:56

I always struggle with the concept of tipping hairdressers too. I have done it on very rare occasions (once when I knew the girl had kept the salon open late for me, I have lots of hair). I know the junior doesn't get paid much, but then neither did I when I was an office junior, making cups of tea and running about like a looney.

However I do feel that tipping in restaurants is important, so maybe I have double standards.

nailpolish · 26/02/2007 15:58

10%

nailpolish · 26/02/2007 15:58

and i say "thats to share with the girl who washed my hair"

3xamum · 26/02/2007 16:01

About 10%, although they ripped me off for a fiver last time so maybe they think I don't tip em enough

ScottishThistle · 26/02/2007 16:03

If I'm feeling flush I tip, though at £50 for a cut my expenses are high enough I feel!

themaskedposter · 26/02/2007 16:06

If I get a good cut (and with things like a coffee or wine and a pleasant chat etc) I do tip .. and depending on my mood as to how much...

mamma2kids · 27/02/2007 12:36

I'm glad I'm not the only confused one. I think its a really good point about the Sat girl who washes the hair as when I was a lowly Pizza Hut waitress the tips really made my day (beer money). Also agree that once you get to high end haircuts (that was the first time I'd paid more than £25)the stylist is probably on a good enough salary. I work in a hospital and wouldn't expect a tip for wiping someones bum, its my job.

Walnutshell · 27/02/2007 14:11

mind, you DESERVE a tip for that mamma...

Skribble · 27/02/2007 21:40

I def tip the waitresses in my local Pizza Hut, they are so nice and freindly, fantasic service, great with the kids. Unlike some other branches where service is crap.

mamma2kids · 01/03/2007 12:21

Thanks walnutshell, I just thank god its not me in hospital having my bum wiped.

Ah but high end salons often rent out chairs to self-employed non-salaried hairdressers who would really benefit from a tip. I just think that if you don't ask you don't get - restaurant menus usually say whether service is included or not. I'd tip a hairdresser if she's got her own piggy bank on the counter like some of them do!

oxocube · 01/03/2007 14:28

Always, btwn 10 and 15%

trice · 01/03/2007 15:13

I don't tip. I have had the same hairdresser for seven years, she owns the salon. I think she charges enough to pay herself decent wage.

lynniep · 01/03/2007 15:18

No, because I always pay on a card, therefore that money is unlikely to go to the person who did my hair (or anyone except the owner for that matter).
If they had a little pot at the desk like they often do in restaurants then I'd get some change out, but I've never seen one. Probably looks a bit unprofessional!
