Just had fab new haircut as haven't been to hairdressers for 6mnths and looking like Winnie the Witch. Cost £43 cut and colour, gave her £45 and said keep the change. She gave a funny look. Did I do wrong?

I usually leave 10% too but if it's over £100 (sometimes is when having more foils)then i wouldn't go over £10 ifswim. No wonder she's always pleased to see me

jellybeans · 27/06/2007 11:41

I usually pay about £26 and give about £3 so pretty much 10%. I used to be a trainee hairdresser and the tips really helped on the £35 a week got. Many HD's get very low wages still and rely on tips. I don't think they should expect it though, only if the person is very happy with the cut.

What is it with all these hairdresser tip threads. A conspiracy of hairdressers?
Yes - tip 50%. Tip everyone, make their day.

The only time I've ever tipped at the hair dresser is when I added £5 for the member of staff who'd walked BabyDragon endlessly up and down the shopping centre trying to stop her screaming until she dissolved in a snotty bundle on their immaculately clean oh-so-stylish black top.

divamumplusbump · 27/06/2007 15:59

do u have to pay cash?

hana · 27/06/2007 16:00

yes always do
for a £43 cut I would have left at least a fiver

poppy101 · 27/06/2007 16:04

I never tip, I know it is expected, but feel that it shouldn't be expected to tip. Also, feel that they often charge engouh to cut your hair.

Sounds really tight.

hana · 27/06/2007 16:07

I don't tip if the owner of the salon is cutting my hair tho

nailpolish · 27/06/2007 16:08

10%

bundle · 27/06/2007 16:09

i would only ever tip the junior who washes it, they get paid peanuts

contentiouscat · 27/06/2007 16:10

I wondered this the other day I spent £80 and gave her £3 or £4 tip, I did think 10% but hell I cant afford that. I looked casual when she said £80 but nearly had a seizure - tbh it was worth every penny she did a great job but post children I dont earn as much as I did!

It went into a pot so they obviously share it out.

Walnutshell · 27/06/2007 16:25

diva, I think you can ask them to increase the payment if by card, eg for a £45 cut ask them to make it £50.

But the whole thing is a bit cringey so I usually only pay cash and round up a few quid. Or not. Ahem.

ThomCat · 27/06/2007 16:28

I don't. They charge so bloody much, they must earn more than me. £45 to trim a few inches off my hair - err hello, it doesn't cost them anything to cut it so that's a pretty HUGE mark up imo. I'd love to earn £45 every half hour or so!
And I haven't liked the last 3 haircuts so definitley not tipping.

hana · 27/06/2007 16:30

they def wouldn't get the full amount tho
and at such high prices! I pay £24 for a fab fab cut

Idreamofdaleks · 27/06/2007 17:44

10% for stylist or colourist
£1 - £3 for junior depending on rating on head massage

NoodleStroodle · 27/06/2007 17:46

No because I hate tipping people like that who I see regularly - especially when he is a man older than me - but I do go for my Christmas cut with half a case of champagne!

Cammelia · 27/06/2007 17:56

I pay by card but tip in cash always between £3 - £5 depending on what I've had done

RedLorryYellowLorry · 27/06/2007 18:12

I don't anymore as it costs £80 for a cut and colour and I earn just above minimum wage so basically that's my week's wage gone I know they earn shite but so do I

DoubleBluff · 27/06/2007 18:26

I don't as the salon owner does my hair. I usually give the girl who does my foils a tip, but i find the whole thing embarrassing. I usuually chuck her a few quid or whatver is in my purse - ususaly not much as don'tcarry cash!

Roobie · 28/06/2007 14:37

I tend not to bother now as the stylist jsut hands you over to the till woman when she's done and walks off not giving you time to fumble in your purse. Moreover I always pay by card and rarely have the cash.

doughnuts · 28/06/2007 14:41

I always tip, even though it's expensive and the owner of the salon does my hair - and I give the girl who washes it a small tip too. I guess I do it because I always have a really good cut/colour job done and it's to show I appreciate her work (even though I've paid £60+ already) and because I want her to go on doing a good job for me whenever I go again. Also I'm too wimpy not to tip !!

TinyGang · 28/06/2007 14:45

I do if I can afford to - roughly a fiver on a £30 cut.

I hate tipping people though - it makes me feel uncomfortable. All 'lady of the manor'.

Here's a florin for your touble my man....I hate that.
