Do you tip the hairdresser (how much?)

Just had fab new haircut as haven't been to hairdressers for 6mnths and looking like Winnie the Witch. Cost £43 cut and colour, gave her £45 and said keep the change. She gave a funny look. Did I do wrong?

10% if I think the service has been good and they don't ask me "Are you going anywhere nice on your holidays?" or "Are you going out somewhere nice this evening?"

usually a fiver. Goes in the communal pot for the many handmaidens tending to the deceptively voluminous Sprat-do.

I can't get my head round tipping- it is such an outdated concept- in real market terms, if hairdressers pay juniors peanuts, then they only have themselves to blame if they can't get staff or staff leave.

Why should we subsidize we their pay?

I pay quite a lot for my hair- cut is £65 and colour is £95 for colour & dry, but no cutting.

I really can't afford/begrudge another 310 on top of that.

anyway, the owner cuts my hair and I don't feel it right that I should tip her.

Haircut is £23, for which I leave £2.50 in tip jar.

I never ever tip my hairdresser. He charges a small fortune and I am slowly going bankrupt because of it. He also drives a better car than me so he clearly doesn't need it ....

I tip the girl who does my manicure and pedicure in the same salon as the hairdresser but not the hairdresser. This is only because the hairdresser is the owner and the beautician is 21 and paid a pittance (and is pg with her first). 10% is about right.
