35yrs old, grey/white hair dilemma!

Hi! I started going white (seem to have bypassed grey) in my late teens, this has accelerated greatly since my late 20s. I dye my hair to my natural colour which is dark brown and I am fed up! Has anyone successfully stopped dying their hair at a similar age? How do I manage the badger stripe while it grows out? I am about 85% white on top, about 60% at the back and sides. Any advice?

I am 42 and am transitioning to white! I have been dyeing my hair since my twenties, my roots fortnightly and I have just had enough! And I am Asian so my natural colour is a dark brown. I have taken advantage of this trend for steel hair so in July, I had blondish highlights put through my dark hair and gradually went lighter and lighter until I am now pretty much all blonde. In the process, I have also gone shorter and shorter to eliminate the ends that are quite heavy with pigment. I have had to have my hair 'erased' to achieve this but it's still in reasonable condition. It's still not where I want it but I get a lot of positive comments about it. In the meantime, it has felt good to actively to something different with my hair as for the past 10 years it feels like the whole thing has been a 'maintenance program' to hide the grey. It is SO liberating. And now I can go 4-5 weeks between colours!!!!

Do it! If you don't like it, dye it back!

Yup, 31 and I stopped the dye. I've bleached a few highlights and chopped it short to deal with the transition. I've had a lot of comments about how much younger I look which must have meant I looked really old in my twenties.

Purple toner helps a lot.

Fab :-) I think the flat colour of an all over dye job is starting to look quite obviously fake, my hair feels like poop and I'm so bored with the maintenance! Think I will go for some light highlights to help blend while it grows out.

I stopped dying gradually and went for lighter nuances first (first light brown, then medium blonde, then medium blond but only for like 5 minutes instead of stipulated 20-25 minutes). It took a year or two. I'm 52. I got tired of all the smelly dye colour six or seven years ago, can't recall exactly, but it was a long-term project fading it out gradually, not having a sharp line between the dark brown (my original colour as it were) and the greyish white that comes now. I recall my mum and dad also turned grey at about the same age.

I let a silver streak grow through my fringe while keeping the rest dyed my original dark brown, then grew out the rest.

Because the streak was there, it hid a lot of the roots when seen from the front & tried to ignore the crispy over-dyed & faded bits.

I kept it a bit shorter & had it cut every 8 weeks. Still took two years for shoulder-length hair!
