Watering eyes, allergies and beauty

At this point I don't have an allergy confirmed and will probably be getting a referral when I go to the doctors on Thursday. However for 6 weeks back at the end of October my eyes did nothing but water all day. Told had infection, two lots of treatment, no better so they took a swab - no infection. Told it was dry eye or blocked tear ducts (both at the same time which is very unusual) so bought some dry eye spray and it stopped within a couple of days.

Over Christmas it started again and we worked out it might be my eye cream so stopped using and it stopped watering. I tried another as the dermatitis on my eyelid was dry and they watered again so cross referenced the ingredients and the only common one was methylparaben.

So I've stopped using any products with it in while I wait to see the doctor. However yesterday I wore nothing on my face, no products at all apart from lip balm and had no watering. Today I used garnier miceller water and a body shop moisturiser (both without methylparaben is) and I've been watering. Washed it off an hour again and it seems to have stopped the watering.

I know no-one on here can diagnose but I wanted to see if anyone had any similar experiences. Currently the only thing to stop the watering is using nothing at all but to hell if I'm going to work with no make up on!!

Yes, I'm exactly the same. There are many brands that I just can't use because my eyes stream all day. Moisturisers with spf are the worst and a lot of mascaras set them off too.

I also suffer with dry eyes and recently eczema and bletharitis which I'm sure as is a result of the products I've used. I don't know what the answer is and I'm fed up of having to use nothing but Diprobase as a cleanser and moisturiser. I hope you get it sorted and work out what it is that's causing it.

methylisolthiazolinone is found in loads of shampoos and cosmetics and the allergy specialist I saw said that about 15% of the population are allergic to it.

This sent my eyes crazy and gave me what I thought was dandruff.

Once I cut this out my problem stopped. Body shop mascara doesn't have it in. Be aware though that loads of shampoos do including some of the expensive brands. Even clarins have it in a lot of their face products.

Jeaux90 my mother in law recently became allergic to this. I'm going to insist on an allergy test and if they won't give me one I'll go privately as I do have bupa cover.

Now I've washed everything off I'm fine but it's going to take a long time to test each product. Luckily the £100's worth of make up my hubby bought me for Christmas doesn't have methylparaben in - phew!

Had mine done via bupa it's a pain in the butt but worth it. I mean in terms of the patch test on your back and if you react it's bloody itchy and you have to leave on for 3 days! Get the referral and go private or you'll be waiting months!!

It's a preservative found in loads of stuff, took me ages to replace pretty much all my brands but got there in the end. Shampoo was the trickiest to replace believe or not.

Thanks jeaux90 that's good to know. It took 3 weeks and 3 different doctors to work out I didn't have an infection last time so don't have much faith.

I'm fed up of explaining to people I'm not crying plus I'm going through mountains of tissues!!

Yep I know, it's horrible and part of me hopes it is an allergy because then you will have your answer at least!

Good luck and take some piriton if the itching gets too bad with the patch test

The Toleriane range from La Roche Posay was good when my allergies flared up, as well as Bioderma Sensibio micellar water . I also have luck with some urban decay make up and a specialist range by Butterlfies Eye Care. Good luck :)

Thank you cakes, I use to use it but the garnier one is so much cheaper so might switch back.

Starryeye unfortunately some of the body shop stuff is making my eyes water so having to leave it out at the moment
