Yet More Fantastic Skincare and Where To Find It

Thread 1

Thread 2

Thread 3

For those who are taking a peek and wondering whether thread 1,2, and 3 are worth reading, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients for our particular needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Deviations on this thread are mostly my fault. Grin

This January we're doing some added extra chitchat about food and diet and reducing or eliminating sugar for both overall and skin health. Recipe sharing encouraged.

If you're in need of some advice coming to grips with your skincare routine please don't hesitate to ask, we don't bite, only occasionally sting with a bit of Biologique Recherche P50 now and then Wink. Just make sure to state clearly what your concerns and needs are in as much detail as possible, skincare is highly individual and a random recommendation for a 'good' product will be completely different from one person to the next.

If you want help, please do read through the previous threads first. It takes a lot of time and effort to answer these queries and often the answers can be found in previous threads, but if you still have questions use the following form to make life easier on us. We generally answer one or to two people a day on a first come first served basis. Not everyone will have answers and sometimes we can't answer you at all. We're only a bunch of amateurs that can respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly either.

Recommendation duly bookmarked and noted!

FizzyBubbly · 21/01/2017 13:59

Coconut only slight cravings here, although I was never that bad to begin with so the change in my first hasn't been too drastic. It's the afternoon 3pm slump and at 8pm when I usually give in so that's when I reach for the nuts! Bliss balls sound good! but the plan I'm following is no fruit for 8 weeks then slowly reintroduce up to a couple of small portions a day after that.

AuroraPolaris · 21/01/2017 14:34

Wow great news bo! Very curious to see how they develop the line. I think it's just a great SPF, qua ingredients and qua texture. And it certainly can serve instead of moisturizer, so to be used straight after serum or so.
Though alcohol and perfume don't irritate my skin. I got it cause the dimethicone was pretty low on the INCI list (in both the silver and the gold version). Just RP the silver for everyday use, by the way, as well as the Sulwhasoo oil cleanser for second cleanse (pretty good price too - 14€ for 100 ml).

Hope your bug is gone... just been skating outside with the kids!!!!

cad186 · 21/01/2017 15:15

Thanks Bo I will start using it tonight. Should I just use it once every day or best to start slowly a few times per week? Yong I will let you know how I get on.

My skin is on the dry side of normal, occasionally dehydrated but less now I've sorted my routine out. My cheeks are very sensitive and react to a variety of products. I think silicones might be one of them. I have reacted to smashbox primers, Paula's choice products including cleansers, the Benton snail cream but not the essence, Liz Earle cleansers, rosehip oil, etc. My skin seems to like snail serums though and vitamin c (tried ost and amara organics).

For spf I have tried anthelios dry touch gel cream, Paula's choice, Elizabeth arden, biore and the one I'm currently using is avene spf 50 mineral cream. I know all of those aren't physical ones. I found the anthelios and biore too drying, Paula's choice my make up seemed to settle in all my pores, avene is ok but again don't feel my make up sits well on it. I would like a physical spf, obviously the cheaper the better but I think I will have to splurge if I want to find a good one so I'm happy to do that. I'm guessing elta MD or skinceuticals?!

depressingskin · 21/01/2017 15:37

Have name changed for this as I'm planning on being brave and uploading a picture or two in hope of help!

Skin type:* Combination, greasy at times on nose and chin

Approx age (range): Late 30s

Primary skin concern: Wrinkles, fine lines, blemishes, orange peel like patches.

Routine : Until recently I had no routine, however, since finding this thread I have for the last month used the following:

AM : Cleanse with Toleriane dermo cleanser, nip and fab dragons blood fix plumping serum and toleriane fluide moisturiser.

PM : Toleriane dermo cleanser, toleriane fluide and 3 nights a week nip and fab glycolic fix night pads.

Makeup : very rare, I hope to start using foundation etc but want to try and improve skin before I brave the makeup counters.

Occasional treatments: None

Things I've tried in the past with disastrous results: Nothing springs to mind

Things that are really working well for me now: Nothing as yet.

Any dietary/health concerns/pregnant: I have psoriasis and get flare ups on my eyebrows and random locations, currently one side of nostril. I use a mild hydrocortisone cream to try and calm the redness/flaking when bad.

What I'm willing to spend on a single skincare item: Probably £20-50 but will go higher if it will help.

I specifically [want help with/am looking for a product to/am curious about trying]:

I am currently really fed up with my skin. This is exacerbated by having a toddler later in life and being surrounded by younger mums. I feel I look even older than I actually am and worry that in the future my child will be cringing at their old mum at the school gate. I have lines starting to develop around my eyes and bad wrinkles on my forehead. I had really bad acne as a teen and have patches either side of my nose where the skin is quite orange peel like. I get large pores on my nose which look quite greasy/plugged up and blackheads on my chin. I'm going to attach some pics to hopefully make it easier for you to advise. Thank you in advance.

This also looks very interesting -

http://www.ratzillacosme.com/bb/anessa-perfect-bb-base-beauty-booster/

But... I also see they've discontinued both facial UVs Angry Hope they do come up with their usual replacement because those are the ones I like.
Well bo since we are falling through the Ratzilla rabbit hole in January we should be ready by April, right? Grin

AuroraPolaris · 21/01/2017 16:40

depressing was your psoriasis diagnosed?

depressingskin · 21/01/2017 18:43

Hi Aurora, yes, I have Calcipotriol (Dovobet) gel on prescription to use everywhere else, it is quite bad on my arms, hands and legs at the moment, but it can't be used on the face so I was prescribed hydrocortisone for those little patches.

EnidButton · 21/01/2017 20:01

Just a very quick post. Not impressed with the Osmo hair mask. My hair feels dry and a bit frizzy after using it. It wasn't dry before I went into the shower. I can't rewash my entire hair so sat here with a ponytail half covered in my usual conditioner. Hopefully that'll at least make the ends feel like they usually do. Brief glance at ingredients, don't think it contains silicones. My hair much prefers conditioners fairly heavy in silicones.

hollinhurst84 · 21/01/2017 20:01

Off topic but on the food subject here's two of my meal plan meals
Top is a chicken breast in a low carb bun, sweet potato chips, low cal coleslaw, tomato and chilli sauce, jalapeños and grated halloumi
Bottom is chicken in jerk seasoning, veg, sweet potato mash, pesto and coleslaw

Hollin those meals sound lovely! Once the baby is here I'll be doing my best to cut out sugar, although not sure how well I'll manage that with the sleepless nights, when I'm tired I always turn to sugary foods

EnidButton · 21/01/2017 23:52

That looks very nice Hollin I bloody love sweet potato.

cad You know sugar makes you more tired. It spikes your blood sugar levels so you get a boost of energy but drops really sharply so you get hit with tiredness. Nuts are better as they give you energy but it's a steady, more even, level of energy, no sudden drops.

SheStoodInTheStorm · 22/01/2017 08:24

Oh bo thank you for the link. It's really helpful. I was had started using the PC twice a week, bumped to three times. My skin never looks good, but it's particularly bad at the moment and I am very self conscious of it. Some of the lumps also really hurt.
Being brave and attaching photos. Some of my cheek marks are scarring from previous spots.

Can HA cause breakouts?

Bought lanolips as I thought it might do the same job as the nipple cream, but my lips are still sore and cracked and bleeding and tight. I definitely drink enough, I think it's the central heating everywhere and the in/out of the cold at work.

All in all, feeling pretty low about my face!!

Apologies I've not caught up with the rest of the thread yet, will do soon.

Enid - is it just general conditioning / softening you are looking for, from a hair mask? If so, there's a recipe I know from another website I used to go on (long hair community). You use 1 part honey, 1 part pure aloe vera gel, & 4 parts conditioner. The aloe vera gel can be bought from Holland & Barratt. The conditioner should be free of proteins (which can leave the hair brittle if left on too long) & silicones (as they can cause curdling). Mix them up & smother all over your hair, cover in a shower cap & leave for 20 mins or more. Don't let it dry out though, apparently it's a real pain to wash out if the AV dries on... I used this before chopping my hair off. I use this conditioner, cheap! I do still use this recipe now, but only as a base for my henna as I like a subtle tint instead of a fiery pixie head. You could probably use your normal conditioner though if you want to try it.

FizzyBubbly · 22/01/2017 09:31

Shestood your skin looks similar to mine at the moment Sad so I feel for you. I'm going back to basics of cleanse, moisturise, SPF for a while but I've got a sneaky suspicion it might be because I bought the wrong PC BHA (got the lotion instead of the liquid). What one are you using? I took the below pics yesterday as its so hard to see if there's an improvement when there are so many bloody marks on your face. You aren't alone!

Enid - I know sugar makes you more tired but when I'm tired its like all willpower/sense goes out the window!!

I bought two PC BHAs back in October (one in error). Anyway, I have the Skin Perfecting 2% and the Clear Regular Strength 2%. I'd like to keep one to use periodically along with my AHA, but I won't use both of them. I'm trying to figure out which is more appropriate for me. I know the Skin Perfecting gets all the hype, but it's for combination to oily skin, which I don't have. I hardly ever get spots. I do have SFs on the nose (not chronic) and redness/pore size/dullness/general ageing are my main concerns (I'm 47). My skin type I would say is normal with some dehydration. So I feel like the Clear Regular Strength would be the one to keep.

What say the experts? I'm very happy to pass on the one I don't keep to someone else...

Pupsiecola · 22/01/2017 10:58

The 'skin concerns' listed are the same for both products (I think this is why I bought the 'wrong one' inititally). The active ingredients are similar although the Clear has a lot more ingredients. I don't fully understand how the two can be marketed to different skin types, but claim to deal with the same issues?

Hi botemp
Yesterday I began buying all the recommendations.
Lrp dermo cleanser
The body shop camomile balm
Lrp toleriane fluid

I am wondering will the ultra not be any good when the fluid is discontinued.

My next lot of products will be from the ordinary when I can afford it.

cad186 · 22/01/2017 12:55

Pupsie I find the same thing with a lot of Paula's choice stuff, they are very similar ingredients wise but with different names/targets. I emailed them once and they told me that two different products with different names were actually the exact same thing which I think is a bit naughty really. I can't remember what the two products were now though!

EnidButton · 22/01/2017 13:37

Lego Thank you. I could do that with the Osmo mask. I just fancied an extra boost to make it more silky. My hair is very shiny and soft but wanted the ends to feel smoother. I think I just like faffing with conditioners.

EnidButton · 22/01/2017 13:40

Shestood HA gives me breakouts. Even when it's in make up products.

EnidButton · 22/01/2017 13:47

Shestood definitely try the lansinoh. It's far better than lanolips which is nice for during the day but didn't soothe and heal my lips like the nipple cream did. Flowers
