Yet More Fantastic Skincare and Where To Find It

Thread 1

Thread 2

Thread 3

For those who are taking a peek and wondering whether thread 1,2, and 3 are worth reading, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients for our particular needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Deviations on this thread are mostly my fault. Grin

This January we're doing some added extra chitchat about food and diet and reducing or eliminating sugar for both overall and skin health. Recipe sharing encouraged.

If you're in need of some advice coming to grips with your skincare routine please don't hesitate to ask, we don't bite, only occasionally sting with a bit of Biologique Recherche P50 now and then Wink. Just make sure to state clearly what your concerns and needs are in as much detail as possible, skincare is highly individual and a random recommendation for a 'good' product will be completely different from one person to the next.

If you want help, please do read through the previous threads first. It takes a lot of time and effort to answer these queries and often the answers can be found in previous threads, but if you still have questions use the following form to make life easier on us. We generally answer one or to two people a day on a first come first served basis. Not everyone will have answers and sometimes we can't answer you at all. We're only a bunch of amateurs that can respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly either.

Yong have you thought about Face Theory. They are plain (can choose unfragranced, relatively inexpensive).

botemp · 20/01/2017 12:33

Have you looked into Mad Hippie products by any chance, plastic? They do a similar thing with 'natural' (not sure they're organic but possibly) with modern science (peptides, actives, etc.) in good packaging with very favourable reviews, even from outside the natural/organic blogosphere.

Don't really see the point of actives in wash off products, Pupsie.

Enid, found you another B5 product. Been meaning to look into this brand for a while, was looking for a different B5 toner they used to sell but is now discontinued but this one looks more interesting anyhow. Derma E Firming Toner. INCI:

Purified Water (Aqua), Glycerin, Panthenol (Provitamin B5), Dimethyl MEA (DMAE), Ascorbyl Palmitate (C-Ester), Thioctic (Alpha Lipoic) Acid, Equisetum Arvense (Horsetail) Extract, Aesculus Hippocastanum (Horse Chestnut) Seed Extract, Organic Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Extract (.1%), Organic Cymbopogon Schoenanthus (Lemon Grass) Extract (.1%), Organic Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract* (.1%), Allantoin, Polysorbate, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Lavender Fragrance. 100% vegan, cruelty-free, paraben-free, sulfate-free, mineral oil-free, lanolin-free, gluten free, GMO-free.

Should point out that while DMAE is anti-inflammatory agent it can be a skin irritant to some.

Speaking of moisturizers I'm suuuper annoyed with Caudelie. They have now added Dimethicone (ingredient nr 5!!!!) to the Polyphenol C15 moisturizer. Unless I was utterly blind when I first bought it a few years ago, I'm sure it wasn't there before. Why oh why ruin a perfectly good cream!?!?!?
When I got a few samples of their new "lifting" line in the summer I noticed the silicones and was surprised because most stuff I had bought from them in the past is/ was silicone free... well, another one bites the dust!

yongnian · 20/01/2017 12:45

Hmm face theory looks interesting pupsie thanks, as does mad hippy bo will peruse both at leisure as currently on the sofa with toddler's second-hand bug just now (typical, first day to myself for over a month) I Must Not Order Anything Else Just Now
Wait, bo are you talking about the face theory there? I.e. Actives and wash offs.

yongnian · 20/01/2017 12:47

Grr that is so irritating aurora it's just in so many things now.

botemp · 20/01/2017 12:50

Yes, face theory.

They also has a cleanser with volcanic pumice stone pieces .

I only really rec their moisturisers on the back of their formulations and packaging, offering a bit more comfort but still meeting my criteria of basic moisturiser that isn't going to do you harm (also small independent and being cruelty-free gets them points from me too).

Oh, good to hear that you like the TO's moisturising factors thing yongian. I will give that a try. Not exactly natural but at least cheap!
No I haven't come across Mad Hippie products before botemp. Mmmm. Very interesting. Shall definitely investigate. Thanks!

yongnian · 20/01/2017 13:04

I'm going to whisper this I also still do like a couple of lush moisturisers though probably these days they are considered neither natural, nor cheap, nor mumsnet-approved....slinks back to sofa...

AuroraPolaris · 20/01/2017 13:10

Sorry to hear about your bug YongSad
Get well soon and don't click on too many online shopping baskets

goatkid · 20/01/2017 13:21

Thanks for the foundation/BB recs. I'll have a look into a few of those when I get home. Like the sound of the Chanel & the Clinique BB. Also the L'Oreal because, well, bargain! I will of course get hold of samples before purchasing. Not the easiest where I live (small town - no department stores etc.) but I'll be going into the nearest city in the next couple of weeks so will do it then

I honestly don't know what I want from the moisturiser Bo. I've always chopped & changed moisturisers, when one runs out I'll buy a different one. Whilst I've not noticed any adverse effects from any of them. I've also not noticed any different positive results either. It always seems to be the same. I'd like a fairly light moisturiser which absorbs well (TO moisturising factors just would not absorb and sat on the top my skin) but leaves me feeling better than I did before it? Is that even a thing? I'm hoping that I know when I've found it Grin. Perhaps the moisturiser doesn't even exist but I'm off skiing in France in 2 weeks so I might pick up a few then to bring home and try.

goatkid · 20/01/2017 13:25

Forgot to say, If I return empty handed from France I really want an excuse to go to the French pharmacies Grin I might give the face theory moisturiser a try.

hollinhurst84 · 20/01/2017 14:12

I like these moisturisers, the echinacea one is the one I used but they have loads

bo That looks good. Strong possiblity I think.

I have no idea wtf my skin is doing today. The past week it has calmed down, rebalanced and was behaving like 'normal' skin. Today there's a pink rash made up of small under skin bumps on my cheekbone, where I never get spots, and 3-4 under skin lumps on chin/jaw which I know will turn into spots. It feels a tiny bit sensitive. Can't be the brownies from last night. Maybe it'll calm down again tomorrow. I am having an illness flare up today so perhaps it's that.

EnidButton · 20/01/2017 14:18

Thank you for finding it btw bo

AuroraPolaris · 20/01/2017 15:47

Goatkid what I have is Clinique Moisture Surge CC (in the pink tube, but the other CC is also very good if they haven't changed the formulation since I last had it), not to be confused with much thicker (normally) BB creams.

yongnian · 20/01/2017 16:43

Thanks aurora I need to recover asap it's proving expensive!
Oh that's a good memory jog hollin have had lots of oils and various other things from amphora over the years.....
goatkid I am happy to encourage you not to return empty-handed from France, it would be a tragedy of epic proportions I booked an extra suitcase for my haul back from there a couple of weeks ago...not quite true but nearly

EnidButton · 20/01/2017 17:41

Don't go all sensible on us goat you must buy something obscure and French. Wink I remember going in a huge Sephora in NYC and suddenly coming over all sensible and putting things back on the shelf!Shock still filled two baskets but it was mainly makeup

Coconut70 · 20/01/2017 18:01

Hello,
I was user 1483300215, finally sussed how to make a name

@botemp and @aurora thankyiu for advice re DS and acne will see GP next week and ask for derm referral. Nhs good here NW scotland.

Since reading threads like this and others i started a proper, results based skin regime. I am 45 and have noticed a big difference in frown lines and overall texture of skin, even big pores. I have a neuro illness and now look ill due to horrible really dark eye circles. Will anything remedy this rather than just concealer.

Thankyou for advice re TO vit C! No longer nippy seems really softening.

VH sugar detox, on day 4 i dont think it helped my blood sugar or cravings. The recipes are overcomplicated and rely too much on coconut in every form. I wouldnt recommend it unless psychologically or placebo effect may help.

Xxxx

EnidButton · 20/01/2017 18:23

Nhs good here NW Scotland

goatkid · 20/01/2017 18:42

No encouragement needed and I'm sure it's a safe bet that I will end up with something obscure. I hope you realise that I will be holding you all responsible for this French pharmacy thing Wink It never has occurred to me before to skincare shop in France before Blush

Gwenhwyfar · 20/01/2017 18:49

Can I ask how you all got all this knowledge? I don't really understand all the abbreviations you're using and feel like I need to do some background reading. Any recommendations for books or websites?

botemp · 20/01/2017 18:57

I didn't realise it comes with a diet plan, Coco. A lot of coconut sounds rather shit indeed, it's a laxative when eaten in excess so they're probably hoping for a bit of instantaneously water weight loss which will just replenish itself soon enough. Shame, it sounded like a helpful thing. Did anyone catch the horizon doc yesterday? Unfortunately missed it, will have to see if it's illegally on youtube somewhere.

I think dark under eye circles are really hard to tackle, in terms of OTC skincare all it can possibly hope to do is improve their appearance slightly through retinol/vit c products (LRP Redermic do eye cream versions for both) but it's never really going to do much but improve hydration and thicken the skin slightly causing the blue to fade a little bit more to the background. That's enough for some but not for everyone.

Well, goat, my the moisturiser is plump but not too heavy with excellent hydration properties, absorbs quickly with no smells (possibly jasmine), leaves no residue and makes me look 'healthy' and vibrant I suppose. No silicones, mineral oils, SPF, alcohol, etc. or any 'active' ingredients that aren't going to do anything in such small amounts. The moisturiser just moisturises. Period. Also, must be reasonably priced and come in substantial packaging that's easy to use but doesn't require me to dip fingers in. I've actually come close with the P&M moisturiser but they need to be about 1/2 the price ideally, in the meantime it's not special enough for me to fork over the current asking price.

I think I caught yong's bug Sad. Knew the cold sore was announcing bad things but I figured enough time had passed now and I was slightly hopeful it would be just the cold sore with a bit of incidental weirdness but had a bit of a crash this afternoon. Off to bed I return.

botemp · 20/01/2017 19:05

Easiest just to ask Gwen, a lot of the abbreviations originate from thread 1 or 2. Other questions also welcome, it's usually educational for everyone, and if not, the nerds in training will finally have a chance to stretch their muscles Grin.

As for my knowledge, it's usually sourced from a variety of places but I'm also quite aware of how those authors' opinions are formed so can ignore certain things, embrace others as fact rather than opinion, etc. so it's hard to just point at a lot of websites to read. A lot are also not the easiest to understand without some additional knowledge. There are some books out there but a lot of the advice will be out of date by now, it really depends on what you want to read up on iyswim.

goatkid · 20/01/2017 19:14

Ah, so much more eloquently put bo. I wish I could describe my the moisturiser so well, it would make it a lot easier to find I'm sure. However I'm still new to this and learning so I'm sure I'll figure it out at some point Grin
