Yet More Fantastic Skincare and Where To Find It

Thread 1

Thread 2

Thread 3

For those who are taking a peek and wondering whether thread 1,2, and 3 are worth reading, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients for our particular needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Deviations on this thread are mostly my fault. Grin

This January we're doing some added extra chitchat about food and diet and reducing or eliminating sugar for both overall and skin health. Recipe sharing encouraged.

If you're in need of some advice coming to grips with your skincare routine please don't hesitate to ask, we don't bite, only occasionally sting with a bit of Biologique Recherche P50 now and then Wink. Just make sure to state clearly what your concerns and needs are in as much detail as possible, skincare is highly individual and a random recommendation for a 'good' product will be completely different from one person to the next.

If you want help, please do read through the previous threads first. It takes a lot of time and effort to answer these queries and often the answers can be found in previous threads, but if you still have questions use the following form to make life easier on us. We generally answer one or to two people a day on a first come first served basis. Not everyone will have answers and sometimes we can't answer you at all. We're only a bunch of amateurs that can respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly either.

Ah thanks garden! I will put some savlon on in the morning, hadn't thought if that, I have some in the car first aid bag. Actually the bad taste could be a good thing cos her licking it is what's making it worse and it may stop her! I must also have some lanolin somwhere, I have a 10 month old too and I def had some when he was first born so I'll have a hunt, thanks!

TweedyF · 18/01/2017 22:00

Hi everyone,
I've been following this thread for the last couple of weeks and feel like I've learnt so much already.

I'd like to ask for advice on my skin and have filled out the questions below:

Skin type: oily, combination. Prone to spots around jawline and blackheads

Age: 31

Primary concern: spots, congestion and dull skin tone.

AM
Was using Decleor Michelle oil, but did not get on with this. I have ordered LRP Dermo cleanse since reading this thread
Liz Earle skin tonic
LRP effaclar duo

PM
Ren Rosa Centafolia cleansing balm
Neutrogena grapefruit wash
Liz earle skin tonic
Effaclar duo
I was using loccitane divine cream but it was too rich for me.

Make up: Dior dream skin primer, dior star foundation and concealer

Occasional treatment: Decleor facial - but haven't had one for over 6 months

Things ive tried in the past: Most decleor neroli products, which I did love the smell of but really don't think they worked for me.

Things that are working well for me now: Double cleansing since I found this thread!

Dietary/health concerns/pregnant: No

Willing to speak on a single item: No limits if I think it will improve my skin

Specifically want help with: Controlling spots and reducing blackheads and oily t zone.

Elixiam - My 7yo ds presented with a weird rash on the bow of his lips what IS it with my kids and their skin issues?! and down towards his chin. Chemist said to keep it clean and persist with Vaseline. 4 days later it does look a lot better.

Turns out he is licking his lips ALL the time Hmm

Have told him to stop

Doubt that'll make much difference tho Grin

RubyGoat · 18/01/2017 22:08

So I'm actually getting to go shopping tomorrow. To a real town with proper shops. I have about £30 in loyalty points at Boots but, since I've switched my skincare routine & am now buying most stuff online, I'm reluctant to buy my face stuff there (as they charge about twice the price I can get a lot of things elsewhere...) So is there anything worth buying? I'm not really bothering with makeup any more. Currently using

Lancome gel face wash
A pure flower water - as toner
LRP water spray in the blue bottle
PC BHA at night (normal strength)
Vichy Aqualia serum
LRP toleriane fluide
Biore watery essence SPF 50 in the morning

All seems fine. Skin much improved compared to a few months ago, although not perfect (I have a spot this week). Waiting for a delivery with SVR Sensifine to replace the Toleriane fluide. Any thoughts? I could easily blow the lot on nail polish but I already own enough to start a nail bar...

Yes it's def the licking that is making it worse wilting.. she is a nervous type and a nail biter too, we've just restarted the horrible-tasting nail varnish stuff in a last ditch attempt to stop her chewing her fingers til they bleed.. it's actually helped a bit this time but now she has the lip problem so I've just thought maybe she's replaced the nail-biting with lip-licking!

mrslebon · 18/01/2017 22:38

Thanks so much for your responses botemp and aurora. You're absolutely right about supposed lack of time in the morning. I cleansed in the morning for the past two days and it's certainly made a difference.

I've actually got TO Vit C and have recently started using it. It burns a bit but not for long, and I like that my skin looks brighter afterwards. Should I be using it every day? I'll try the TO Niacinamide too, and I'll get the Buffet while I'm at it.

Thanks again for your help Flowers

SaltySeaBird · 18/01/2017 23:52

Was away for a weekend and then a few manic workdays but lovely to have a parcel waiting for me botemp the Philip Kingsley Swimcap protective cream arrived so will try it out tomorrow when I swim.

So it's week and a bit since my skin got really red. I stopped virtually all skincare and it is still the same. I will post a picture in the morning but it hasn't really changed despite me using no products on my nose in particular.

My sister said it looked like Roseca to her but that she isn't an expert.

Any suggestions on getting my bright red nose less Rudolph?

EnidButton · 19/01/2017 00:34

Vaseline will create a barrier to stop the rash/sore bit getting wet from the licking but won't add any moisture or help it heal. Savlon will help heal, lanolin will add oil which should help heal and will create a barrier too. Either of those sound better than Vaseline to me. Not much of a Vaseline fan really.

Tsmummy08 · 19/01/2017 07:44

Hollin Have you tried this brand of shampoo/cond for dry curly hair?

www.allshadescovered.com/collections/haircare/products/shea-moisture-coconut-hibiscus-conditioner?variant=31243777802&gclid=CjwKEAiAwfzDBRCRmJe7z_7h8yQSJAC4corOP6emb9gqUmFGxZGZxOEfZ2ycPeBCJ817s32liBNCuRoCx2Pw_wcB

My hair is dry/coloured/frizzy but it was too rich for me!

hollinhurst84 · 19/01/2017 08:14

That's the one I'm wanting to buy when I've used everything up

Elixiam · 19/01/2017 11:30

Thanks garden and enid I slathered her with savlon and lanolin this morning and sent her off to school with the lanolin so fingers crossed she keeps applying it through the day, she wasn't allowed to keep it in her pocket, has to ask the teacher for it if she needs it 🙄 so hopefully she will feel like she can do. Although it's so thick it should stay on at least til after lunch. Thanks!

I've just popped to town, can anyone recommend a cheap ish (up to £10ish) mascara? Every one I try is either really dry and flakes off after not long or really wet and goes everywhere! I like the fat brush ones, and need volume rather than length..

Tsmummy08 · 19/01/2017 11:37

Hollin I've got an almost full shampoo and conditioner and a completely full conditioner (they sent two in error) - let me know when you want to try them and I can decant if you like Smile

botemp · 19/01/2017 11:39

susannahmoodie, I think I'm as confused about your skin type as you. If I had to guess, combo with dehydration. Have a read and confirm for yourself. Are you suffering from acne too, since you tried the triacneal?

In general, standard advice applies to you; you need an SPF, BHA and Niacinamide for oil control. If you're wearing heavy duty coverage makeup you need to be using an oil based cleanser to take it off. Garnier micellar is already a known breakout suspect for many, but micellars in general really are not suited for anything more than an eye makeup remover or emergency. Definitely not a first cleanser. You'll need some form of a hydrating serum but as I've no clue what your skin is really like, I don't really know what to recommend either.

Tsmummy08, no need if I do end up buying with them I'll get the lower strength one, I much prefer a 15% Vit C and with the low-ish pH that feels a better bet for me.

Elixiam, a little bit more 'natural' (and therefore less scary with DC, you can have whatever opinion you want on Mineral Oil in my book but if you're close to accidentally ingesting it, I get rather worried) but great for children, especially with their toxic saliva affected skin is the Weleda Weather Protection Cream, Boots seem to sell it online, not sure if they sell it in store also. It's like vaseline with added restorative ingredients but not MO based.

Pupsie, removing with a flannel may be the issue? Officially DHC needs to be emulsified before removing but those with dry skin may find that a bit strippy so flannels work best in that scenario.

Was I really that bad lol? I remember you telling me that whilst I was in Boots purchasing some Toleriane cleansing milk and trying to make a quick decision on the range's moisturisers to take advantage of the 3 for 2. I think that's what you were referring to Grin.

You're all this bad when you're bright-eyed, new, and all bushy tailed. It's like the first sign of a skincare junkie, thinking they must all buy it now, as surely it'll run out or something... also, exceptionally gullible to all sorts of claims as they're somehow convinced they know a little bit of the science, therefore know everything about good skincare now so anything they take a fancy to must be a good^ product, right? Sorry, you're all still in nappies Wink

TweedyF, look into a BHA to use in problem areas (suggestions for products made many times over by now, start with the samples and 2-3x a week before gradually increasing use). You'll need to use it in conjunction with an SPF, which is advisable anyhow.

mrslebon, you can use the Vit C every day provided you tolerate it well, it is slightly exfoliating (ascorbic is an acid) so if you're not used to it you made need to build up tolerance to it. If you're getting the Nia too remember not to use in the same routine as the TO Vit C, so one in the AM and one in the PM.

Salty, if the redness is still persisting it probably is good to see a professional, despite changing some of your routine you switched to gentler products so the reaction is indeed very odd.

A general note on the use of forms, I instated them because people have questions related specifically to them and without a broad context it's hard to advise sometimes. I tend to respond to most forms on an input level basis, if you've given me very little to go on there's very little I can say in return, this has nothing to do with a knowledge level of skincare on either side, but with the level of detail you take to explain your issues and skin type. Again, I'm not psychic or telepathic, I don't know what you don't tell me.

I know there is some trepidation and threshold anxiety with some lurkers to use them and I really don't want to discourage anyone or kill the courage you've been building up so far to post one. The form and help related to that really has been set up to help those with more complex and unusual issues, but, if it's a simple question, eg. what type of products should I be looking for to battle blackheads and spots? ask that and don't bother with the form. If I find I need more info to help out with a simpler question I'll point you to using the form.

^ This is not a dig to anyone or about a specific poster or posters, this happens continually and I get that there can be some confusion as sometimes I won't respond to a question and point towards using a form and sometimes I answer forms very elaborately and sometimes very succinctly. As a general guideline - if it's specific to you and only you and you are struggling with your routine, use the form. If you're really struggling with your skin and products are not working for you and you really need an overhaul, use the form. If it's a general thing that applies to more than you but may be product specific to you, think twice before using the form. The worst that can happen is that I'll ask you to use the form instead.

Tsmummy are you sure? That would be great if I could try some

Elixiam · 19/01/2017 13:02

They had it bo! Will be great for the baby too. I'm addicted to the smell of the weleda calendula! Every time I buy the wash for the baby I end up using it up!

purple15 · 19/01/2017 13:08

Thanks botemp
Yes they are capillaries
Sorry I'm abit naive. I have got some good advice from here and for a long time have used hot water on my face. I'm hoping everything will settle down once I start buying all the products.

Tsmummy08 · 19/01/2017 13:19

Hollin - no worries at all, just PM me when you fancy trying

JDSTER · 19/01/2017 13:52

Aurora package arrived today. Thanks Smile

EnidButton · 19/01/2017 15:26

Hollin The Osmo mask is the new one I've bought! looking forward to using it now. Smile

bo I don't think I've ever tried the Eucerin one. Had a moisturiser from them that was all wrong but that was before I knew about ingredients. Will check it out, thank you.

hollinhurst84 · 19/01/2017 15:29

Ooh let me know if you like it

AuroraPolaris · 19/01/2017 16:14

Elixiam that cream is really great (others here already know how much I love the Weleda baby line Grin). It's also good if baby has slightly red or dry cheeks from dry weather or when they get rash from sweat in summer.

User re your son - obviously none of us can give you advice as to a serious acne problem. I personally have never suffered from acne and my son's situation was very different because the little bumps he had were skin coloured and were not acne (though I understand might have become in future if neglected).
I did take him to a homeopath who specializes in children (for another problem though) and coincidentally also in skin conditions. Both that and the routine I posted have almost eliminated the problem. We also eat very healthy, don't buy any drinks and kids don't eat a lot of sweets. This was also emphasized by the homeopath (as far as you can apply it to children).
From what I understand it is sometimes crucial to intervene with roaccutane (and fast) to prevent scaring, but personally I would try to see a derm if you can, though I know this can be difficult in the U.K.

I'm linking a couple of films CH made with Dr Sam B which I think have useful info.

Good luck and feel free to ask for product recommendations after you have decided on a course of action Smile

AuroraPolaris · 19/01/2017 16:15

Glad the package arrived JDSTER!

RubyGoat · 19/01/2017 16:17

I did take a look at the back spray in Superdrug... but decided not to buy it. Took a photo of the back of the bottle though, as it's not available online yet so the ingredients list can only be viewed in store. I'm a bit suspicious of the alcohol content... I tend to get dry itchy patches after a spot has healed, I don't think the alcohol would improve it?

botemp · 19/01/2017 16:30

Yes, the Weleda cream is also good for sore noses (adults and babies) and an all-around super dry skin saver. This means we have to stop in Switzerland too, doesn't it? I mean we recommend Weleda often enough and I don't mind visiting the Therme Vals at their expense if only for the gorgeous architecture, spa looks nice too. Pay up already, Weleda, we have a trip to plan Grin.

user, sorry missed your question re: your son earlier, but I agree with Aurora and suggest a derm is probably the next step. I don't really know how the process works in the UK but it definitely sounds like he could be benefitting from things like Retin-A or Roaccutane rather than having to muddle along with not so effectual stuff.
