Short sleeved knitted dress and what else?

Happy new year all!
I've got a busy day today, starting with church (can be chilly but I do also get hot dealing with the DC), then the in laws' very warm house and then a restaurant.
I've just been going through my wardrobe and have decided to wear a knitted dress with short sleeves.
I was wondering if I could wear a plain black long sleeved top underneath? Then I could whip it off if too hot!
Or a denim jacket over the top?
What do you experts suggest?
