How big are your feet as if they are size UK 5 or under you can get some great boots meant for children. I have leather walking boots from Mountain Warehouse - in the Kids range - bought for £25 in the sale lat year and they have been great - got them to replace my previous Ecco pair which cost about 4 times as much. Looks as though they have the same ones again this year at same price. Bit heavy for you but they do a lightweight waterproof pair as well for a similar price.

DH swears by Lomer. I was a bit dubious about the attachment of the sole to the boot (cemented?) but he has done a lot of walking in them including quite demanding Fell walking and says they are among the best boots he has ever had. Just bought a pair for myself - need a wide fit and they seem very comfortable already.

Scarpa. I walked the west highland way in August, including 3 days of torrential rain, feet stayed dry and no blisters. Got a pair for about £100 but the quality is first rate so worth it if you're a walker. Got the terra gtx but think they're all good.

my usual trick - if you are a size 7 or more try men's boots. Better made and often cheaper, no stupid pink or sparkly bits. Assume that you will be walking rather than standing on touchlines or shopping.

rule #1 - if possible, buy bloke stuff.

I wish I could wear mens boots Special, I'm a 5 at most so cant... I often prefer the designs/colours and I understand they are generally wider

Are they really better made do you think?
