does anyone else struggle to do anything with their hair?

I have always been someone whose hair is either shoved up in a ponytail or straightened. I see people doing all sorts of lovely things with their hair...some complicated and some not, yet I cannot replicate it at all. I have recently realised my life is slipping away and I would really like to look back and not always have the same hair do in every photo!

I googled 'easy up dos' and tried some on there but some didn't look anywhere near as nice once I'd done them and some just looked plain awful on me.

Am I missing something??

I am the exact same. My mum always says "you have such nice hair why dont you play about with it" but i do, i have youtube videos open and i literally cant do it

Me! I have nice thick hair which is fine when straightened but as soon as I ask it to do anything it protests and does anything but!

I have very thick, slightly wavy, hair which refuses up dos of any sort and breaks things used to restrain it. Straightening it makes my nose look massive because that's not how it's meant to be!

I keep it short and choppy! I've learn that it's best just to go with the flow (much to the horror of many a hairdresser, but my current one has learnt, now, what I mean, when I want it to be able to do a certain thing!)

Yep. I'm useless with mine. Had it long, had it short, had it in-between (the most annoying; I looked like a scarecrow).

I just had three inches chopped off in the hope that it would become more manageable. I'm not sure it has worked and now I can't tie it back

I have aggressive hair. It clearly means to show me who is boss. One side definitely likes me better than the other side. I can generally make the right side of my head look presentable. The left side always has sticky up pieces, rejects any hair product and mostly looks like the cats have been licking at it. I long to be one of those sexy bed head people..

I can't do hair styles and I don't really have the motivation to try. But my hair does change a lot as I often will cut it myself when it's got too long and is annoying me (which has lead to some interesting results), or cut in a fringe. And I used to dye it lots of different colours using the home dye kits. I've had highlights done at the hairdressers in the past and had it cut in different styles. That's something you could do if you want a change.

Oh secret witch your description did make me chuckle! I feel your pain as I often wake up and find one side has gone from looking ok to looking like I'm a replicating the scene from 'there's something about Mary'

Golly - that's true about colouring. I used to in my early 20s then thought I'd give my straw like hair a rest and wait til I needed to hide greys before doing it again. In truth I'm now at the stage where I'm having to pluck grey hairs more frequently so maybe I should look at colouring again!

Yes. 'secure with a Bobby pin' always gets me. I have very heavy thick hair with a kink and no amount of bloody Bobby pins will hold it! I'm going for a long pixie in January to see how that works. It can't be any worse than it is at the minute well meaning but misguided hairdresser gave me the same style as my MIL

Oh yes the wonderful Bobby pin...the flexible friend that is definately not my friend when I look like a hairdressers style of pinhead at the end!

Yes my hair is the torment of my life, so many people including my hairdresser say how lucky I am!!! If only they knew the daily torment and man hours spent making it look less like Edward scissor hands hair.

My hair is thick and curly and frizzy, I straighten it daily which makes the condition worse but at least I vaugely resemble a human. I know there are bigger problems than my hair but it's so depressing. I'm looking into having it chemically straightened in the new year I'm so lost with it..

Do you all have the necessary gadgets? Big hair, curling wand, rollers, straighteners? Are you using the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair? Normally those will make hair manageable. Also styling products. Hair oil is a godsend as is elnett.

When using bobby pins remember to put them in zig zag side down. That's what grips the hair in place. Also if your hair is exceptionally thick, get the large sized ones. They're definitely not made equally!

@Note3, something about Mary describes my hair battles to a T! Also never get the bobby pin thing right either! Pins will clamp down the middle portion whilst the recalcitrant ends run off to play amongst themselves. The struggle is real...

Yep Missss - I have the holy trinity of a decent hairdryer, GHDs and a Big Hair. I think my problem is that I'd like a hairstyle that I don't have to do so much styling to - but I think that may be asking too much ;)

Not heard what this Big Hair thingy is so I'll have to Google. Though it had better be a miracle worker as even a bun with Bobby pins is beyond me haha

This is definitely me. Every single time I go for a night out, I get ready and put my make up on and I look quite nice. Then as soon as I go to do my hair, the whole thing goes to shit.

What would happen if you didn't straighten it and just wore it wavy?

Yes! I like the idea of doing my hair in different styles but it never looks right - the videos make it look so easy but I just don't seem to be able to co-ordinate my hands on my own hair!

I have good hair but i am pretty cack handed at doing anything with it.
I get round it by:

• having a weekly blow dry which i then drag out for a few days using dry shampoo (its £20 - i have cut down on other treats so i can manage it as it really does make a massive difference to my looks and self esteem)
• putting it up on other days, but have experimented a bit so i know what suits me, i always have a few bits hanging down which i gently straighten.
• make sure colour is always good so even when just chucked up it still looks nice iyswim
• can manage a sort of messy, beach waves look the day after a bun with lots of scrunching and Boots Curl Cream or Bumble & Bumble Texturize Cream

Oh god, I do. Fine hair but lots of it, very slippy and also very heavy when it's long. But because it's quite fine it looks well,bahaved. I mention to hairdressers that it's a bit tricky and they usually say "oh, I'd manage to get an updo into it, I'd see it as a personal challenge".

Two hours of wrestling and eleventy billion grips later, I stand up out of the chair and everything falls out as soon as I move.

I have terrible hair and so few people seem to have hair like mine. It has a lot of volume but there's actually not much of it, so once in a ponytail or but there's practically nothing there and it looks all pathetic. It's naturally wavy or curly but leaving it to its own devices is out because it looks a mess rather than like it's supposed to look like that. I straighten it but it curls and frizzed at the first hint of moisture in the air. No products make a difference and the only thing that makes it presentable is the Babyliss Big Hair followed by running the straighteners quickly over the top layer for shine. Even then I'm screwed if I encounter any humidity, rain, steam etc. Have attempted up dos but don't have enough hair to make any of them work.
