Make up beginner

If you were a make-up beginner, and were being offered a voucher as a Christmas present, what brand would you choose?
I've never really worn proper make-up till now, and I'm not really sure where to start!
I was thinking maybe debenhams, for a range of makeup counters? I like the look of Benefit, but I'm basically just being swayed by packaging at this point...
I just want to look a bit more polished but still fresh and minimal.
Any suggestions?

For a make up brand rather than department store, Bobbi Brown. At least two thirds of my make up bag is Bobbi Brown, they do "me but polished" to a T.

I like Benefit but "fresh and minimal" is not really their strong point.
