Hair disaster - please advise

I have black hair (a little grey).
I normally have a black gloss/tint.
I discussed with my hairdresser, i'd like a subtle blue/black possibly just on the ends. We agreed not to use bleach (although she pointed out the results would be subtle without). I was fairly happy with the result although you couldn't see much (if any blue) but it looked dark and glossy.
This morning, it's obviously mid brown on the ends (and a bit ginger in sunlight!).

I'm going to call in the morning. On my receipt, I have been charged for a 'toner' as well as a tint, googled this and says normally used when dying blonde hair. So not sure should have been used on my hair?

Please can anyone advise, feel very upset.

Worried hair has been damaged. Also don't really have the time to go back for any correction and also hate the thought of confrontation and it cost £100!

DH of course thinks its hysterical!

They may have counted the blue as a toner. It's possible she added blue to black this using extra colour. It won't have damaged your hair. I'd be more concerned about the fact it hasn't come out the way you wanted. You really should go back

Pomegranatepompom · 11/12/2016 14:00

Thanks for the reply. But how could she turn the ends brown???? I'm worried she has used bleach or it was the toner??

I plan to pop in tomorrow....

No idea really, as colour doesn't really lift lighter. Can you show me a pic?
Unless she tried to lift it to show the blue more. Was your hair already coloured black or was it all your natural colour?
If it was already dyed she maybe tried to lift it without telling you.

Pomegranatepompom · 11/12/2016 18:46

Thanks again fur your reply. I have a gloss every 2-3 months so yes already had semi permanent colour on. Will try and load a pic

I am a hairdresser, the only way your ends could have lightened is if they were lifted with bleach. Toners are generally used on blonde hair to clean up and even the tone in the hair. I would be going back.

Pomegranatepompom · 11/12/2016 18:56

Do you think she's bleached it? It looks awful doesn't it ?!

OP posts:
Pomegranatepompom · 11/12/2016 18:57

Also the ends feel rough now Hmm

Dowser · 11/12/2016 20:34

They do look rough and brown.
Good luck tomorrow

Pomegranatepompom · 11/12/2016 20:39

I think she's damaged my hair, it feels awful. I'm pretty tearful...

I don't know that to do, I don't having any confidence if they offer to correct it. and putting more dye on will make the condition worse??

OP posts:
wendytorrence · 11/12/2016 20:46

I really can't understand how you ended up with that when you wanted blue/black. It certainly does look like she's lightened it.
Please don't be nervous about going back.

wendytorrence · 11/12/2016 20:47

It needs to be darker, so they'll add colour which isn't anywhere near as damaging as lightning.

Pomegranatepompom · 11/12/2016 20:49

I am worried they will try and fob me off somehow.

Mostly I'm upset as it feels terrible and I didn't want anymore cut off.

We specifically spoke about how I didn't want it bleached. I don't understand why she would just go ahead and do something :(

OP posts:
wendytorrence · 11/12/2016 21:13

I don't either, if I felt I couldn't achieve the desired result without bleaching then I would tell my client that it wasn't possible.
Clearly that isn't any where near blue/black so there shouldn't be any problem with them. Was it blue/black when you left? Have you washed it ?

Pomegranatepompom · 11/12/2016 21:25

That was pre wash, I have washed it now. still looks the same.

She did warn me that you might not see much blue but didn't say anything about lightening it!

I'm more upset about the condition now tbh
Also she must have seen the colour when she dried it?
The rest is black with some blue tones (I think you can see in the pic!)

Don't get upset, it's easily fixable. It's hard to tell from the picture but are the lighter streaks grey hair? Whether the hairdresser intended to or not, she has put something on your hair that has lightened the ends, unless the grey has grabbed onto some red pigment in the toner? Confused

The best course of action would be to have a small amount trimmed off the ends and then your usual black gloss/ tint applied. That will restore the shine and condition and should be done free of charge.

Do be quick getting back to them, most hairdressers are extremely booked up this side of Christmas.

Pomegranatepompom · 11/12/2016 21:50

I don't have much grey, so don't think the streaks are that and the ends were black. Out of interest, why would she apply toner? She didn't say she was going to use toner...
I was planning to call in tomorrow after work.

idontlikealdi · 11/12/2016 21:54

Wow. That's not blue black it looks bleached!

plannedshock · 11/12/2016 22:00

I would go back! You wanted blue black and you've got...washed out mousey hair and orange ends?!? (Sorry-not trying to make you feel worse) but definitely go back go on Pinterest or google with a screenshot of exactly what you want so there's no crossed wires! If you're putting darker all over it won't do anymore damage it will make it glossy and healthier looking.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 11/12/2016 22:05

It's baffling. Toners are used to give a subtle colour to the hair, usually to counteract unwanted shades. For example, a blue/purple toner would be applied to blonde to neutralise yellow or orange tones, a green toner would be used to neutralise red tones and so on.

Applying a blue toner to your black hair would have made next to no difference. Toners do not contain bleach and wash out after a few washes.

All I can think is that she has applied a lightening product containing bleach by mistake or in an attempt to show up the blue. Bleaching dark hair will result in a brownish gingery colour which seems to be what you have been left with.
You didn't get what you asked for, in fact it's the opposite of what you wanted Shock so they are obliged to rectify it.
I hope you get some answers tomorrow. It's quite easy to fix.

Bluntness100 · 11/12/2016 22:08

I don't understand this either, you have black hair normally, and you wanted a blue black toner on the ends, and this is how you walked out the salon, and now you have woken up and are blonde and ginger ( as the colour shows). ?

Why are you only concerned about the ends, you seem to be blonde. This seems a bigger issue than the fact the ends are ginger?

Pomegranatepompom · 11/12/2016 22:13

I think the photo must look worse, the rest of my hair is black with a blue tone, it's just the ends.
I honestly didn't notice until today (neither did DH) but it was a dark day yesterday.
In normal light, the end 2 -3 inches look brown (bit ginger) & burgandy!

OP posts:
plannedshock · 11/12/2016 22:19

I've just read your first post, seems like they've pre-lightened your ends and tried to tone it blue?! But toners don't give colour like that with any hold so it's just washed off and left you with the pre-lightened stage. As a guess

plannedshock · 11/12/2016 22:19

By pre lighten I mean bleach

Bluntness100 · 11/12/2016 22:23

Maybe it's my iPad,,,genuinely you look blonde in that pic to me, with ginger ends...🙄

Agree though they must have bleached the ends.
