Help - work party dress emergency!

MissMillament · 11/12/2016 11:38

I just tried on the outfit I was going to wear to the work party on Thursday and it looks hideous! I need to find a dress ideally that I can order online and will arrive for Thursday - budget about 50 quid. Black preferable as I have a do coming up at the end of Jan that requires a black dress. I am blonde, late 40s, size 16, hourglass shape (huge norks) and not keen on my legs so knee-length or midi ideally. Has anyone seen anything suitable? I have trawled my usual websites to no avail so am hoping for inspiration here! Please help! All my colleagues are much younger, loads thinner and way more glamorous than me so I need to scrub up a bit.

similar question here so this thread may give you ideas

Thanks LadyJane I've had a look at that thread and there are some lovely dresses on it, but sadly over my budget as I can only afford to spend about 50 pounds.

What style of dress do you usually wear? How glam do you want it?

Bluntness100 · 11/12/2016 13:39

Have you tried asos? They have a large selection well priced and delivery is fast and cheap.

Gloria42 · 11/12/2016 13:41

I have this for my night out, it's lovely on m.next.co.uk/g642048s1#454975

SarcasticMrKnowItAll · 11/12/2016 13:46

Depending how dressy you want to be, I bought this and it looks nice on

Actually, out of stock in a 16, ignore me!

imjessie · 11/12/2016 13:58

Did you see my Matalan offering? I got it for £14 and it looks and feels so much More expensive .

MissMillament · 11/12/2016 14:56

I love that Next one, Gloria. I haven't bought anything from Next in years - how do the sizes run? Jessie, I saw yours and loved it, but I don't think I could wear it - am absolutely massive on top (36gg) and the kind of bra I need to wear wouldn't work.
Buster I usually wear wrap/twistfront type dresses as they work with my chestage, but am looking for something a little more glamorous. Basically, so I don't look like someone's kindly maiden aunt brought along to lend a little respectability to the evening.
I will try ASOS, thanks Bluntness. Too bad about that dress Sarcastic it loooks lovely but I think those short sleeves would cut into the wrong place on my flabby upper arms - I probably need either no sleeves or elbow length.

I've just been looking at this one Anyone care to give me their thoughts on it?

Love the second one you linked to Buster. Very is not somewhere I have shopped before.

That's a lovely dress (M&Co). Very is easy, just pay for as you would normally do or open a account and save a bit more off your first order, I think! They deliver really quickly too!

imjessie · 11/12/2016 16:21

Ok .. I'm a size 10 and 32 g . I got a nice strapless bra from matalan or you couldn't get away with abnormal bra and pull the straps down .

imjessie · 11/12/2016 16:22

I like the one you linked to .. also my friend had a lovely burgundy lace long sleeve dress on from peacocks last night .

NapQueen · 11/12/2016 16:22

What about something from Lindy Bop

chrispenrallt1 · 11/12/2016 16:26

I know the dress you mean from peacocks, it's in black as well and it's £20. Last Monday special offer on line it was half price I bought it !

FauxFox · 11/12/2016 16:31

lace and velvet
lace
bardot-ish neckline

MissMillament · 11/12/2016 17:06

Love the first one you linked to Fauxfox. I am going to order that and the M&Co dress and hope one of them gets here in time and looks good on. I am also very tempted by this Lindybop dress - so many great suggestions guys - thanks so much.

Ok, not a dress but I've got this and it's really flattering on and looks great with either flats or heels and you can go to town on the accessories, hair and make up - I go full red lips, nails and big hair. I don't like showing off my legs and have magnificent bust and it's really flattering. m.asos.com/asos-curve/asos-curve-wrap-jumpsuit-with-3-4-sleeve/prd/6500811?iid=6500811&affid=14179&channelref=product%20search&mk=abc&currencyid=1&gclid=CjwKEAiAj7TCBRCp2Z22ue-zrj4SJACG7SBEl2xa66DOh0SLJ1K5zxaXoES0WI9X5m_BhozJaCNEnBoC__Dw_wcB

If you have a Sainsburys nearby, it's worth looking in there. They have a lovely black dress - it's about £20. Elbow length sleeves, zip down the back. Amazingly flattering for an hourglass. I like it so much I bought 2. V v easy to wear, dress up diwn. the perfect LBD. Can't see it online but it's in stock in my local store.
