Light fresh fragrance for ill friend

Liiinoo · 10/12/2016 14:02

I want to buy a small gift for a terminally ill friend. Her sister suggested a nice light scented shower gel or body lotion, nothing with lavender or too heavy or spicy. Can anyone suggest something appropriate. My budget is about £20.

this is on budget

So sorry to hear about your friend Sad

PLEASE, please check before inflicting Eau Dynamisante on anyone, especially an unwell person. Some people really like it, but to many of us it is one of the most headache-inducing substances on the planet.

justaweeone · 10/12/2016 18:15

Flora- never heard that before normally it's Angel etc you here that about
Fragrance is a very personal thing
Just out of interest as someone who finds it headache inducing, what fragrance do you think is light?

hollyisalovelyname · 10/12/2016 18:59

I detest Clarins Eau Dynamisante.
I think it would make me feel even more ill.
I detest Angel too. I feel a migraine coming on, as I associate Angel and migraines. A woman in Boots sprayed me with it and I got the most awful migraine after.
Verbena is a lovely fresh scent.

florascotianew · 10/12/2016 19:02

just a wee one I'd completely agree about Angel - I find that rather migraine-inducing, too.

For a person who's unwell, really seriously I'd ask and try to find what they like. Some people like lavender smells; other prefer citrus. There are various 'simple' versions of these smells - and, in may ways, the simpler and lighter the version of the smell, the better. Perhaps try Crabtree and Evelyn, Miller Harris, Jo Malone ....??

Traditionally, also, eau de cologne was offered to people who felt ill.

I'd think - without knowing what the actual scent smells like (I live a long way from mainstream shops) - that the lemon verbena scent recommended by the first poster on this thread might be a very good idea. The original 'old' eau de cologne is pretty inoffensive too: farina1709.com/gb/

I can remember when I was in hospital a very light scent called 'eau de l'hermine' was quite refreshing. I'm not sure that it's easily obtainable now, and it was quite expensive ( a gift). But it was lovely and non-cloying: www.fragrantica.com/perfume/Lostmarch/L-eau-de-l-Hermine-9732.html
Hope this helps. There are many people on Mumsnet with better/more extensive experience of scents than I have. OP's idea was a very kind and thoughtful one. I hope they can help her.

The L'Occitane Verbena mist or shower gel is a wonderful suggestion. You could also gift a selection of Verbena products like this

So sorry to hear about your friend.

FrustratedFrugal · 10/12/2016 19:36

L'Occitane Verbena is great. You could also consider a set of Korres minis. They are like a mini holiday in Greece.

OCSockOrphanage · 10/12/2016 20:04

Really nice quality soap? Or shower gel in a light but not sickly fragrance. I think I'd be inclined to stick to gentle florals or mild citrus. Roger & Gallet might have something to please.

MrsMeeseeks · 10/12/2016 20:12

I love the flower waters from this range:

Or how about Liz Earle skin tonic spray?

Neither are fragrances, but both smell beautiful and are refreshing and uplifting to use.

BeaLola · 10/12/2016 20:31

Very sorry about your friend.

I like the Verbena from L'Occitane mentioned up thread, and from M&S the pack of 4 Korres shower gels - £15 on offe and gives a choice of smells,

HopperBusTicket · 10/12/2016 20:36

I'm sorry about your friend. Something like this would be nice. I really rate Elemis and it would leave her skin feeling nice. It's £25 here but looks like it's available cheaper from other sites.

Crabtree and Evelyn la source is nice and light and refreshing. It seems the clarins is a real marmite thing, personally I can't stand it, it's far too strong and perfumey for me.
Nesti Dante soaps are lovely too, if she likes using bar soap.

Liiinoo · 11/12/2016 06:00

Thank you everyone. Some very helpful ideas.

nothruroad · 11/12/2016 09:32

I second Crabtree and Evelyn La Source, it's a very light refreshing scent. The hand cream is very good too.
