How to style crushed velvet slip dress

I found an original 90s dark grey-blue strappy slip dress in a charity shop today and given it's back in and the material is nice I thought I'd chance it. It's about knew length and slightly loose/bias cut.

Thing is I'm not sure how to style it especially for cold weather. Can i wear something under it? Or a big cardi over? Or do I need to accept that given I was there first time around I'm far too old to carry it off?

In the 90s didn't they wear white thin ribbed t-shirts under them, then you could pop on a big chunky cardy. It sounds like a nice retro get up!

Yes thinking black tights and chunky ankle boots. I need a chunky cardigan though, mine are lacking in the chunk stakes!
