Warm, comfortable boots that can cope with frost and snow

I know this is a hardy perennial, but, having been in denial because I hate all cold weather and everything associated with it, can now see it's actually going to be cold this winter - at least for a bit. Plus am going to New York in December and understand that's often cold and snowy.

So I probably need to give in and get some sensible boots. Not too clumpy or hard to get on or too high up leg, please - usually wear ankle boots. But must be warm, must be comfortable enough for lots of city walking, and must have non-slippy soles - I'm always terrified I'm going to slip over on any frost/slush/snow. Not at all intrepid.

Aren't Merrell the ones people on here often recommend - if so, which style/s? Any other brands that fit the bill? Maybe Ugg - the non-'traditional' ones?

As per Celtic & Co, I prefer the Woodsman boots to the Ugg style.

Ugg noira if they still make them!

I second the fur-lined DM Gayle boots. I've had lots of compliments on them too.
