Mini kilt - what to wear on top

I've just ordered this mini kilt in the MacLean tartan, but I'm rubbish at skirts - what do I wear on top? Interested in both dressing it up and down.

I used to love my mini kilts, sadly too old and fat for them now! But I would normally wear them with a black jumper and tights. Or in fact any colour but matching tights and jumper. Maybe a beret as well ( back in the 80's.) But seriously, I found them so versatile, just pick out one or some of the tartan colours, and you can wear the kilt with heels, DMs, riding boots, anything really.

In my head mini kilts go with polo necks.

fiorentina · 24/11/2016 21:46

I usually wear polo necks too.

MinesaBottle · 25/11/2016 02:39

To dress it down, a fuzzy jumper - angora or mohair or something - it's got that punk look and is warm to boot. Dressing it up - no idea! Polo neck would be good, maybe in one of the colours of the tartan? Or something metallic?

Thanks everyone. I was thinking a black jumper but I've no idea how to wear them and what looks good around the waist. I suppose I could go tight-fitting, but I prefer something looser- but then anything I have is too long and drapery.

I just find skirts difficult!

Reiss jumpers are usually very good quality and last years if you wash them well. And I cannot shout loudly enough about Florence and Fred's cashmere jumpers. They'd look cute with a kilt (which is lovely, btw).

myfriendnigel · 25/11/2016 10:51

Wearing mine with a boxy jumper from Zara today. It's quite a short jumper-hem sits on the waist to show off the shape of the skirt iyswim.

Ineedmorelemonpledge · 25/11/2016 10:53

I always think a slim fit polo knot in black works best, coupled with thick black tights and some nice high gloss leather black knee boots.

Ineedmorelemonpledge · 25/11/2016 10:55

Polo neck I meant.

Uniqlo have some nice turtle necks too

Oooo, thanks for ideas. I think boxy and not too long is maybe the way to go. Beetling off to google now.

Tell a lie, mine is from mango.oatmeal colour with a turtle neck.

FleshEmoji · 25/11/2016 14:07

That unique top is merino which I do like... hmm, not sure about high necks though, will I boil?

No shouldn't think so. Plus t looks classier with a mini skirt >>hopes

mocha78 · 25/11/2016 20:32

I love my tartan skirts, I find them quite versatile. Lately I've been wearing them with turtle necks tucked in, it feels more modern that way, dark tights and ankle boots or knee length boots. I've also got a couple of slash neck black jumpers, quite thin material I wear with them or you could look at long sleeve crew neck thinner tops tucked in. Have seen them styled with shirts with a jumper over too (although this may be veering too school uniform like - couldn't wear tartan skirts for many years after having to wear one to secondary school!)

FleshEmoji · 26/11/2016 05:54

Good point about classier with a high neck.

I'm nervous of tucking in as my waist is my weak part. I'm wearing size 8-10 now, but strictly, my waist is probably a 12. I've lost a fair bit of weight but the tummy is always the last to go!

That boxy shape might emphasise what I do have?

I wear a boat neck jumper with mine. No cleavage but not boiling.

FleshEmoji · 26/11/2016 07:02

Boat neck is an idea...

I found this which I like and its merino. Love merino. www.baukjen.com/uk/shop/baukjen/knitwear/livia-roll-neck-jumper-caviar-black.htm

Thanks Francis- I have a black body already so can try that and be all judgy about my tummy in the mirror. Like the contrasting cardy idea, but I think I'll have to look the actual tartan between the eyes before I decide on colour.
