Sequins and velvet practicality

Two questions really;
One, is it "middle aged mother out for the night trying too hard" uniform to wear a sequinned top with jeans?
Two, how comfy and practical would either a velvet or sequinned dress be? Wouldn't the velvet crush or the sequins fall off?

It really depends on the style, if you pick something with an air of Granny then it will look middle aged. If in doubt don't do it.

I can't wear sequins at all because I find them incredibly uncomfortable- just scratchy and horrible. It's obviously not a problem for many though- about 4 out of every 5 women I saw on Saturday night were wearing full-on sequins.
