Think I'm going to do no spend 2017 - anyone care to join me?

I did no spend 2014 (ended up buying a couple of bits, mainly stuff I really needed for work as I have to dress smartly but generally stuck to it).

Anyway since then I've been a bit better with clothes shopping, thought more about what I actually need and what I'll actually wear eg I've stopped buying pretty dresses and high heels that I'll never wear as I'm mid-30s and no longer go out on the town.

I've also been keeping track of my spending as this year I've spent £100 per month on clothes and beauty. I've filled some gaps in my wardrobe and bought a few investment pieces (leather jacket, new winter boots) so I'm thinking I have what I need now and could probably do another no spend (or at least low spend) in 2017. Anyone else?

I've mentally spent my birthday and Christmas money...and it's not on 'essentials'. That said I haven't actually spent it, that's good, right?
Day 4...feels longer Blush

I've just remembered I spent £13 this morning (how did I forget this?) replacing my dads espresso cups my youngest DS smashed before Christmas. At least I wasn't spending on myself.

Checkedstripes · 04/01/2017 15:04

I'm hoping that spending my Christmas vouchers helps as I'm itching to pull the amazon trigger! Need clearly to get out of the habit of spending as a pick me up Confused

ofudginghell · 04/01/2017 15:11

I spent £13 on a new garden gate latch and spring yesterday but justifying it as it needs to be more secure than it is due to a new dog in the household Confused
Happy to say that I haven't purchased anything else other than essentials in the four days of 2017.
Long may it last Smile

Hello! I'm in and no slip ups so far - doing a no spend on clothes and shoes except for one pair of black work trousers and one pair of black ballet pumps. Saving them for my return to work as I don't need them now and I still have 3/4 of a stone of baby weight to shift.

Looking forward to staying motivated!

I started to do this last year and it made a real difference. At one point a few years ago I was literally spending hundreds a month and it's taken a long while to get rid of the excess on eBay. (The proceeds have funded several weekends away so it's been worth doing despite the hassle.)

I really the idea of buying just one thing per month but making it a good thing.

I've even resisted the Hush sale so far. Smile

cheapskatemum · 04/01/2017 22:54

Did this last year through necessity and will continue this year because it taught me so much! With both my birthday and Christmas in December, I usually start the year well-stocked with smelliest and this year is no exception. I will need to buy hair conditioner and facial toner, but that's probably all in the toiletries department. My sandals lasted through last summer, much to my surprise, so will probably need replacing. Other than that, I hope to alter and repair what's already in my wardrobe, as I got a sewing machine for Christmas. Plus of course make new clothes. I enjoy a good rummage in charity shops, but will be discerning in my purchases. I noticed today that the rail in my wardrobe is bowed in the middle from the weight of clothes hung on it and I couldn't squeeze the skirt I'd just ironed onto it. I am particularly bad at culling clothes I rarely or never wear, so will try the "wear it once & see..." strategy outlined up thread. Hi to those I recognise from last year's thread & to newbies!

mowglik · 05/01/2017 09:26

Checking in! I've given myself a £50 budget. The last two months I tracked my spends and it was £290 both months Blush and I didn't even buy anything very expensive.

Doing well so far, not feeling any need to browse for stuff think I did that enough over Xmas. I think I might spend this month debobbling and sprucing up my current wardrobe and maybe paring down some.

Good luck to everyone else this year Smile

TheWombat · 05/01/2017 13:24

Hi all Smile. I'd like to join in, at least for the first six months. I will buy on a replacement basis as things run or wear out (e.g. new conditioner, perfume, knickers, hair trims). But other than that, I'm going to try for no new purchases. I have lots of lovely clothes and I LOVE the 30wears concept!

I did really well on my no-spend last year, right up until about November. Then it all went a bit downhill. I'm always tempted when feeling good/happy rather than through stress or a 'retail therapy' motive, and I'd like to just be a bit more conscious and less profligate about my spending in general.

Some of you say you track your wears / spends - would any of you be willing to share the templates you use for this?

leedy · 05/01/2017 14:13

OK, I'm in. I just returned a couple of things I bought in the sales that I didn't actually need/like all that much, and I've listed a ton of stuff on Ebay.

Not doing total no spend, but certainly more mindful spending and a purged wardrobe.

ArieltheMermaid1720 · 05/01/2017 15:03

I'm going to join you too. My spending is out of control and I have so much stuff. So, only essentials. My goal is to keep my personal credit card bill under £100 which looking at it is still quite a lot and should be perfectly do-able, so how come it's usually sitting around £300-£400? No more makeup either, just replacements.

FrustratedFrugal · 05/01/2017 15:31

I've started the year successfully - I've had a few shopping urges but haven't bought anything yet.

TheWombat, I've kept track of clothes worn by listing them on my phone. I've done this for about two months now.

When I have worn an item 10 times, I mark the item with an (20 with and 30 with**). I aim for a cost per wear of

Think I'm going to do no spend 2017 - anyone care to join me?
TheWombat · 05/01/2017 16:00

Ooh that is a good idea frugal.
Embarrassingly, I think my wardrobe would take up all my phone memory (I dread to think how many vest tops I have!). Which says it all, doesn't it! I must...cut...down...

FrustratedFrugal · 05/01/2017 16:13

Wombat, I am only listing the items that I wear - probably 80% remain unlisted... This makes the task of tracking more manageable. But I also realized that my wardrobe was full of jeans that I never wear: I storaged them and the pairs that I actually do wear take up much less space.

If you go for #30wears, you can actually achieve that only if you have a limited number of items to start with. And I have decided to cull certain items if I don't manage to wear them at least 10 times this winter!

FiveShelties · 05/01/2017 18:13

Had a wander around the sales and managed to buy absolutely nothing. I will need to buy some Conditioner shortly, I cannot believe I actually need to buy something.

Lonoxo · 04/03/2017 16:47

I was very good and unsubscribed from the e-newsletters from my regular shops in the New Year but they keep sending me printed catalogues. I had some free time today so I have contacted their Customer Service team to stop the printed catalogues being sent to me (annoyingly there isn't an option to stop this on my account).

Hush have sent me a printed catalogue too. I have never shopped there and I don't think I requested a catalogue. I had a quick flick through and there were some nice stuff in there but I am remaining strong!

I have been looking over my expenditure for last year (in general, not just on clothes). I didn't get into debt last year but I didn't save much either. With this no-clothes-spend 2017, I have managed to save over £100.00 in Feb.

Hope you are all doing well too!

NoraCharlesMartiniGlass · 04/03/2017 17:53

Yep, still no spend at all on clothes/shoes etc. Also no frivolous spend on toiletries - just replacement shampoo etc.

My leather jacket is wearing perilously thin at the elbow and I've had a replacement in an online basket for a while now. Haven't pressed the "buy" button though.

How's everyone else doing?

AyeAyeFishyPie · 04/03/2017 18:15

Still not bought anything save replacement toiletries. Fine so far!

doctorboo · 04/03/2017 18:18

Lovely to see MNetters doing well so far with the No/Low Spend 2017. Smile 👍🏻
In Jan I spent £24 on gym clothing which I'm getting a lot of use out of --> beach body goals
