Think I'm going to do no spend 2017 - anyone care to join me?

I did no spend 2014 (ended up buying a couple of bits, mainly stuff I really needed for work as I have to dress smartly but generally stuck to it).

Anyway since then I've been a bit better with clothes shopping, thought more about what I actually need and what I'll actually wear eg I've stopped buying pretty dresses and high heels that I'll never wear as I'm mid-30s and no longer go out on the town.

I've also been keeping track of my spending as this year I've spent £100 per month on clothes and beauty. I've filled some gaps in my wardrobe and bought a few investment pieces (leather jacket, new winter boots) so I'm thinking I have what I need now and could probably do another no spend (or at least low spend) in 2017. Anyone else?

Good grief!! Blush Pooping in!!! Grin Hardly, you all know I mean popping in.

And I don't mean lily-liveries either. Ffs, lily-livered. When will I learn to proof read!!

OurBlanche · 12/11/2016 18:59

I was having lovely time cross breeding your John Cheese with Gordon Kaye and getting a rather lovely, yet confused stereotypical, comedy French Brie...

Allo, Allo, just pooping in to see all you lily liveries...

These threads tend to be a bit Freudian - JohnCheese you made my day Wink

RebelandaStunner · 12/11/2016 21:39

How do you not spend and still visit S&B? That's a form of torture surely?
Half of my purchases are threads/links I've clicked on here.
I couldn't do it, I'd get obsessed with it then I'd cave in, in a ridiculously short time.

Frugal I had a look at the 30 wears thing- looks interesting.

flirtygirl · 12/11/2016 22:53

Im in but from jan 31st, i did 6.5 months no spend this year from then and adopted a one in one out policy for what ive bought since. I have earmarked 4 things i would like to get in jan as sales time and so ill start after the sales.
The only things not incl in my no spend are bras and leggings, some leggings last longer than 6 months, others havent so i cant guarantee what i have will last and my bras always break unexepectedly.

ememem84 · 13/11/2016 09:13

I'm going to caveat my spends. Only with gift vouchers. Dh is buying me a voucher for underwear for Christmas.

MartinRohdesBellybuttonFluff · 13/11/2016 09:35

Please can I come back? I regularly contributed to the last one, up to a point, then fell flat on my arse Blush

My spending is out of control and I need to clear my cc card again. It's just a silly habit I've allowed myself to sink into and must break (damn my weakness and online shopping).

FrustratedFrugal · 13/11/2016 09:40

Great to see that sommany people are joining! Great goals!

I have set up my #30wears tracking. I will keep a list on my iPad/Phone and try to update it daily for a couple of weeks. I will include workwear, coats, sportswear and shoes but I will not be tracking underwear and socks.

I've just realized that if I wear a £300 item 30 times (and wearing something every day for a month or every third day a season is a lot!), it is still £10 'per wear. I tend to automatically assume that cost per wear is pennies but it is not!

FrustratedFrugal · 13/11/2016 09:42

Meant so many (cannot type)

MartinRohde welcome, you are in good company!

doctorboo · 13/11/2016 11:00

Most of the items in my wardrobe cost less than £20, probably less than £10 or £5 but I'm going to keep my eye out for more expensive stuff in chazza shops in the hope it lasts longer. My MIL and SIL's are amazing bargain hunters and always look really good in their expensive bargains...not that I plan on buying much.
I'm going to have a sort through this afternoon I think, I've been wearing the same few bits as my size 12 stuff is too small. and yet I ate a giant bar of chocolate just now, no self restraint

VanillaSpiceCandle · 13/11/2016 11:01

I'd like to join. I think I have to. I need to really reduce my spending be

VanillaSpiceCandle · 13/11/2016 11:03

Oops. Sorry. I really need to reduce my spending next year. Although my wardrobes aren't bulging I've got more than enough to last me. If I aim for £0 it'll at least make me rethink before I buy.

Also I don't post much so sorry for the mistake. If I check back in hopefully that'll keep me on track.

Babblehag · 13/11/2016 11:08

Count me in, planning on living a lot more frugally, I have already cut down on fuel costs owing to changing the kids schools, and i'm no longer driving an extra 100 miles a week. Dp is going to join the RFA so were expecting a large pay drop for a couple of years that we need to absorb. I need to no spend. Kids clothes are pretty much sorted owing to hand me downs etc, And the only expense will be school uniform. Some of which again can be handed down, or make do for the following year.

Babblehag · 13/11/2016 11:09

Are charity shop buys allowed?

Checkedstripes · 13/11/2016 11:12

I'm in - I definitely need to sort my spending out as we're saving for a house! I need the odd pair of decent flat shoes but I'll aim to get them in the January sales before we start and I don't want to but I'll include buying fabric and patterns too, sob sob

Advice0nscarplease · 13/11/2016 11:37

Babble you can make your own rules, so if you want to make an exception of charity shop buys that's fine

OP posts:
FrustratedFrugal · 13/11/2016 11:42

Charity shop buys are allowed but I think the spirit of the thread is moderation and frugality! They can be excellent sources of higher-quality clothing but my personal experience is that I also end up buying random bargainous things that don't quite work.

Advice0nscarplease · 13/11/2016 11:46

Re 30 wears thing, if I bought a £300 item (which I don't think I ever have done) I'd expect years of wear.

I have a designer coat (bought for £150 in TK Maxx) that probably retailed at £500/£600. I've had it since autumn 2012 and worn it pretty much most days from October-April each year. It's starting to look a bit worn now so will probably retire it after this winter, but will have gotten around 1000 days wear from it.

Likewise I've recently ordered some winter boots for £150 ish and will expect them to last a good few years

I've been thinking about this and am going to join in and try to go low-spend in 2017. I'm not sure I can do no-spend, although it's something to aim for. There really isn't anything that I need and I wear scrubs or black jeans and a tunic at work so I should be able to get through without buying anything much at all.

We don't have financial issues but I have a habit of buying things that I don't really need just for the sake of it and it's that that I want to stop as it's so wasteful. I did a major wardrobe cull when we relocated a couple of months ago and the amount of stuff that I had that I either hadn't worn at all or had barely worn was ridiculous Blush I gave a lot of it away to my Mum and a couple of friends and the rest went to the charity shop. Even with what I kept there's a lot of it that barely gets worn.

My real problem is expensive outdoor gear, I have a ridiculous amount of it including several £300+ Arc'teryx/Patagonia/Rab coats and 5 pairs of £100+ Salomon running shoes, yet I'm always on the Cotswold Outdoor and Gear for Girls websites lusting after more of the same. Generally though, that stuff does get worn but I have enough of it and really don't need any more. I also need to stop looking at things like the Phase Eight dresses currently linked on another thread, which are lovely and I'm very tempted to buy, but I would NEVER ACTUALLY WEAR as I really don't have a 'dress' lifestyle or job. My issue is definitely idle browsing leading to unnecessary impulse purchasing, both online and in shops - if I don't look I won't be tempted so that's my resolution!

squiz81 · 13/11/2016 16:05

I'm in. But I'm going to allow myself charity shop purchases. And if I find good bras im getting them!

MumboNumber5 · 13/11/2016 16:24

I'm in! But low spend rather than no spend - like the idea of the 30 wears rule too.

FrustratedFrugal · 13/11/2016 16:50

I don''t want to imply that my wardrobe is full of £300 items Wink - that's not the case, most of my everyday items are from H&M, Esprit, or Decathlon. But just like Beastof, I like fancy outdoor stuff and I have a fair number of coats. I also have some workwear and going out clothes that have been worn only a handful of times Blush Not to mention a rack of work dresses that I rarely wear. Frankly, far too many items that are in the £20+ cost per wear range. I want to slow down and be more deliberate...

Babblehag · 13/11/2016 16:52

Ohhh bras are a must for me I'm afraid, I'm lucky to get 6 months out of them before saggy elastic or underwire stabs me in the chin or armpit, massive boobs, lots of walking. I've tried the more expensive brands to see if they last longer but unfortunately they don't.

JamieVardysParty · 13/11/2016 17:05

2016 has been pretty low spend for me. Think I have gone from spending an average of £2-300 every month to about £300 all in.

Most of it was gym clothing (3x tops and 3x bottoms), a denim midi pencil skirt, one white tshirt, a playsuit (for a wedding) and 2 summer dresses.

What I've learnt is to really focus on things that I love, that are in a material, shape and colour that suit me and that fit in with my lifestyle. This has really helped me to reduce spending. I've also got rid of things that don't suit or that I won't wear, leaving me with a bit of a capsule wardrobe. This could be reduced further so that might be my aim for 2017 - to declutter in general.

2017 might be tricky as I am hoping to go back to work so will need an entire new working wardrobe but will use the principles above to build a capsule wardrobe.
