Think I'm going to do no spend 2017 - anyone care to join me?

I did no spend 2014 (ended up buying a couple of bits, mainly stuff I really needed for work as I have to dress smartly but generally stuck to it).

Anyway since then I've been a bit better with clothes shopping, thought more about what I actually need and what I'll actually wear eg I've stopped buying pretty dresses and high heels that I'll never wear as I'm mid-30s and no longer go out on the town.

I've also been keeping track of my spending as this year I've spent £100 per month on clothes and beauty. I've filled some gaps in my wardrobe and bought a few investment pieces (leather jacket, new winter boots) so I'm thinking I have what I need now and could probably do another no spend (or at least low spend) in 2017. Anyone else?

Can I join too?

My beauty product hoard is out of control, clothes and shoes are much the same.

I have the Kondo books and have made some progress but no where near enough. I would say I wear less than 10% of what I own. The rest is waiting for me to lose weight/get fit/plan stylish outfits.

I follow some bloggers who always look perfectly put together and I look like I got dressed in the dark at speed.

I am cancelling the Birchbox and quickly sneaking in a few last minute purchases before Jan 1st.

BillHicksRanting · 28/11/2016 14:23

I will join on a reduced spending/ minimalist basis. I don't really think it's necessary to enforce a total no spend policy unless you financially have to. I'm focussing on only keeping or buying occasional things I love to wear, wear a lot and that are comfy and practical. My wardrobe is streamlined down, e.g. I have one winter coat (parka) and one spring coat (from Seasalt), two pairs of jeans, four jumpers etc. I have what I need and I hate surplus stuff and waste.

We live in such an empty consumerist society and I am sick of it!

Ok I'm stepping off my soapbox now.

Apologies if this isn't quite in the spirit of the thread but if I see my thoughts onscreen, it'll help me commit. I'm not considering a no-spend but my aim is to only buy new if it's planned, whether to fill gaps in the wardrobe or to replace / replicate much loved stuff. No limits though on buying 2nd hand so still lots of charity shop, dress agency or vintage buys.

It's partly money and partly queasiness about subsidising sweat shops and yachts for Philip Green. But if I'm honest, it's partly because I think having a higher disposable income has made me lazy. I was a far more creative dresser when I was young and skint and I'd like to try and get some of that inventiveness - and fun - back.

PrizeyPrize · 28/11/2016 14:39

So if you sell an item on Ebay then use the profit to buy a new item in a charity shop/ebay to the same value or less, technically that's no spend, is that allowed??

Strawberryfield12 · 28/11/2016 15:28

I would like to join the limited spend in 2017, well at least the first half a year. I really think I have everything, the only item I might have a look on Jan sales are ankle boots as the current ones I have had since 2013, worn almost every day every winter, so it feels appropriate to renew if there is a good deal on good pair. And there might be some clothing items for following winter for toddler DD in sales, depends the offer really.

Other than clothes and beauty products, I spend lots of money on homewares. I shall ban myself from Amazon! Between me and DH there is an Amazon delivery almost every other day. We dont struggle financially, but it starts to feel bit shallow me constantly buying stuff. I will keep 3 haircuts per year as that is minimum for me to look decent.

snowgal · 28/11/2016 15:51

I'd like to join and do a low spend 2017, was sort of thinking along the lines of one good quality item a month. There are a few things I've been wanting to purchase to fill gaps, like:

  • new denim jacket (mine is 20 years old and doesn't fit that great), *new birkenstocks (mine died at the end of summer) *denim shirt
  • embroidered smart/going out top, possibly sheer - this is proving entirely elusive, perhaps it doesn't exist These, along with jeans which will need replacing at some point, pants, socks, tights etc. Is like to make my some purchases for 2017. We have a lot of house renovations planned for the next year so it's like to focus on minimising our stuff and making our space work for us. My big problem is that I'm a sucker for Toast clothes and eBay "bargains"!
OldJoseph · 28/11/2016 15:53

My resolution is to buy no make up in 2017. I have enough. It's all cheap (how I justify spending) but there's more than enough in the drawer.

I don't think I will use it all up by the end of the year but if I manage not to buy anything new...I'll be pleased and then perhaps I'll have a treat.

I'll try and do the same with clothes.

FrustratedFrugal · 28/11/2016 16:35

I'll do a makeup/cosmetics no buy in 2017 and a clothes low buy (=anything bought has to be worn at least 30 times in 2017).

Onthewingofaswift · 28/11/2016 17:03

I'm in again. I don't have any summer shoes or sandals so will need to buy some next year. I'd like to go cold turkey no spend. There is no need for me to buy anything and I want to reduce my hours at work. I will only buy something to replace an item that has fallen apart. My weakness is blogs and eBay.

OldJoseph · 28/11/2016 18:14

I'm going to enjoy trying different combinations of make up...eg today I used an old tinted moisturiser with a different face powder and was pleased with the results.

I'm going to have a more make do attitude and see if there are any pleasant surprises.

MrsMoastyToasty · 28/11/2016 21:27

I've started an almost no spend policy in the last couple of months. I'm in the process of sorting my bulging wardrobes. I can't be faffing with selling stuff on eBay but I will be taking a big bag of stuff to our local cash for clothes place.
I have also made bras last longer by investing in a strap extender, which cost about £5 for a pack of 3 from m&s. So if my weight goes up then they still fit. I've also been known to remove the wires from damaged bras to use for when I just want a comfy one when I'm lazing about at home.
I also dye clothes to get a new lease of life from them.

Singasongof6pence · 28/11/2016 21:29

I will join, I am freaking out a bit about an interest free credit card I have, I only have £1500 on it, but would prefer zero so I use what I don't spend on clearing that ASAP !!!

HuckleberryGin · 28/11/2016 21:29

I'm going to do no spend, apart from if I lose weight (an ongoing goal), I'm going to allow myself to but new basics.

GoTellTheBees · 28/11/2016 21:40

I'm going to low spend. I have a serious make up and perfume addiction.
I will commit to topping up on one perfume for the year
I will commit to using up all my make up and only replacing as needed
I will commit to every 8 week fringe trims
I will commit to no buying of clothes

jarviscockatiel · 28/11/2016 21:45

I'm willing to try again.

Haven't spent anything on clothing, hair or makeup (beyond shampoo/conditioner!) since December 2015 so will be even more of a challenge to last another year!

NoraCharlesMartiniGlass · 28/11/2016 21:56

Wow Jarvis that's hardcore. I got to June but then folded in the summer sales.

pregnantat50 · 28/11/2016 22:03

is the no spend just on clothes or other items too, eg. perfume, magazines, shampoo etc? I would also like to join

TeamFinn · 28/11/2016 22:04

I'm in for low spend. My name is TeamFinn and I have an eBay problem. I have a wardrobe full of clothes that don't really go together or require me to lose a stone to fit well. But really, I do have most of what I need. I may need some jeans soon as my favourite pair is on it's way out and I will continue to get my hair done and to replace my main products (face and hair) as I finish them. My husband will be so pleased.

aunicornisnotjustforchristmas · 28/11/2016 22:37

Dipping my toe in.......
I'll give it a go although if I suddenly loose that 3 stone I've been trying to shift for the last 11months then forget it but I'll try and adopt a one-in-one-out policy instead.

Airandmungbeans · 28/11/2016 22:48

I seem to do this by accident! I can't stand the thought of clothes shopping with a toddler and a preschooler, so I just don't. Think I've spent under £70 on clothes this year. I asked for a few new tops for my birthday which have seen me through. I wonder how low spend I could go next year, it's also a good incentive to lose some weight as I have a ton of stuff I've outgrown that has shrunk!

I've not bought many clothes this year I don't think. I've certainly DONATED a rather sizeable amount of clothing to H&M, Oxfam and to the local clothes bank. Makes you think about all the space saved. I've also been really into sewing books, and they make you view RTW more carefully.

JigokuShojou · 29/11/2016 18:12

Of course, living here in Hong Kong, all the RTW clothing is shitty quality. I've got a coat from Primark that I bought 3 years ago that is still in tip-top condition. I can even bung it in the washing machine.

BroomstickOfLove · 29/11/2016 22:33

How on earth do you manage no spend? I run out of stuff/ clothes wear out and need to be replaced all the time! I'm assuming it doesn't apply to food or bills, but what about leisure and entertainment? and replacing stuff that has holes in or is generally unfixable?

FiveShelties · 30/11/2016 07:11

broomstick - my low spend means no spending unless absolutely necessary. I have so much stuff that I need to reduce so it will take ages for me to actually NEED to replace anything. Mine does not apply to food, bills or wine!
