Scandinavian coats

CruCru · 10/11/2016 12:17

At the start of winter every year I start thinking about getting myself the sort of warm Scandinavian coat that they wear on Fortitude. Every year I decide that I probably don't need a coat that is good down to -32C.

However, I do rather like this. It is rather expensive but then, so are these.

Is there anything else I should look at? I'm thinking a proper, luxurious coat.

I saw a Canada Goose coat in TKMAXX last week... I tried it on and put it back before I spent £500

squiz81 · 20/11/2016 14:55

I'm Going to ikea tomorrow & theres a big TK Maxx nearby I may need to make a quick detour!

YouWereAlwaysPerfect · 20/11/2016 15:00

You should really consider taking a look at some Canada Goose coats, they are just the best winter coats and come with a life time warranty, no matter where you are if you have one of them on you are guaranteed not to feel cold.

YouWereAlwaysPerfect · 20/11/2016 15:02

Whoops, I need to read the whole thread before commenting Blush just seen that you've bought your coat.

OnlyHereForTheCamping · 20/11/2016 16:40

Tk max had the Didrikson brisk for 99. I think I would rather have a lighter waterproof and layer underneath. I think I would get too hot on a walk. The hood was fabulous it would definitely keep you dry

squiz81 · 20/11/2016 16:59

Thanks Onlyhereforthecamping I have a Jack wolfskin at the moment which is quite warm but the hood doesn't seem to be quite big enough. So a fabulous hood sounds very tempting! I expect it won't be in TK Maxx tomorrow, it's very much luck of the draw in that shop!

doctorboo · 20/11/2016 17:03

squiz81 Are you near the Purley Way by any chance? If you are would you mind letting me know what the stocks like & the prices, please?

Anatidae · 20/11/2016 17:11

I live in Scandinavia so a decent coat is a must. The woolruch ones look lovely. Fjällräven one is nice but I wouldn't pay 500 for it - the fake fur on them isn't nice.
Didriksons are brilliant. Canada goose are the absolute best. Once I'm back off mat leave with a decent wage coming in I'm getting one.
for the U.K., you need waterproof fabric. The fjällräven isn't waterproof.

I know opinions vary on fur, but it is coooooold where i live and you do see people in fur coats. My personal opinion is that if it's farmed ethically it's no worse than leather or sheepskin, which people don't seem to fuss about. My parka is fur trimmed and the fur has an eco/human certification, as does all fur sold here. There are of course some very unpleasant farming conditions in other countries which should be avoided like the plague.

squiz81 · 20/11/2016 17:47

doctorboo I'm not sorry. I'll be going to thurrock.

CruCru · 20/11/2016 19:32

Hey, thats cool YouWereAlwaysPerfect. I love the look of the Canada Goose coats but I am too fat for them - they have a thing on the website where you type in your height and weight and they give you your size. In my case it was an "Oops! We don't have that in your size." Probably a good thing.

I got a Didriksons ' vibrant 'here. I got it in peat which is really lovely green. I have had a lot of 'I love your coat, where did you get it? Let me have a look at it properly ' comments.
I think I got it at a reduced price. It is worth every penny. I think I might its sew myself into it until spring!

allegretto · 20/11/2016 19:46

I know someone who works for Woolrich (but not well enough to ask for a discount). She always wears their coats and they look gorgeous in real life! I wouldn't want to wear fur though so that's why I am not getting one. and because they are about five times my budget

bigbuttons · 20/11/2016 19:48

Another great thing about the Didriksons is that it has toggles for adjustment all over the place; round the hem, waist, pockets, back of hood. I really like the hood one as in high winds the hood stays put now that I have discovered the toggle. It also means it doesn't flop over my eyes either. It has a double cuff and a brilliant high neck which is lined in really soft material so there are no nasty gaps for the wind to get in and it can zip up to your chin so your face and neck are well protected . I would highly recommend Viking Kids. The customer service is really, really good.

herbaceous · 20/11/2016 20:03

After recommendations on here, I bought a Didriksons three years ago, and it is the best thing I have ever bought. Warm, waterproof, comfortable... it's like going out in a house. No weather can touch me! The hood stays up even in a brisk wind. I look forward to the temperature dropping below 10deg so I can wear it again.

bigbuttons · 20/11/2016 20:51

herbaceous they are ace aren't they?

Anatidae · 20/11/2016 21:04

Have you actually tried a Canada goose on? They do go up quite big (and the men's ones really do.) they are the absolute dogs nads when it comes to keeping you warm.
I find the weight/height thing on websites totally inaccurate.

YouWereAlwaysPerfect · 20/11/2016 21:10

CruCru Don't put yourself down, like Anatidae said they do come up quiet big, or you could get a mens one I don't think anyone would notice.

Anatidae · 20/11/2016 22:26

Do try one - height and weight is just far too crude. I'm a size 16 and tried one one eight months pregnant and it just did up over the bump, so you may be surprised!
They're not exactly fashion items so a men's one would be fine. I had a men's xxs down jacket when I was a slender young thing and it was perfect.

wickedfairy · 21/11/2016 06:16

I have a Didrikson parka - absolutely brilliant! Lovely and warm and waterproof! Nice long arms too, which I usually struggle with finding. Best winter coat I have ever bought.

CruCru · 21/11/2016 08:59

Thanks all. I do see what you mean about the men's ones but it will irritate me to spend £900 on a coat and have to get a men's one because they have chosen not to make one in my size. As it is, the (women's) Landsend one has arms that are slightly too long so it's likely that the men's coats will have even long arms.

I'll stick with the Landsend one - if I find that I need another one in a year or two, I'll do a bit more investigating. If Canada Goose aren't fashionable then, they might be a bit cheaper.

Which Canada Goose coats are waterproof?

CruCru · 21/11/2016 11:09

I've had a quick nose at the women's parkas. It looks as though they are all wind and water resistant but not actually waterproof.

hollyisalovelyname · 21/11/2016 12:01

Thank you Cru

rubybleu · 21/11/2016 12:05

Good grief. I bought my Canada Goose Trillium parka for £400 three years ago. Snow and Rock now want £825.

I would probably get a Woolrich coat if I was to buy again - I think they are more stylish. I love my coat because it stops me basically losing the plot in the UK winter (Southern Hemisphere native), but the blingy logo on the sleeve is irritating.

Mondegreens · 21/11/2016 12:26

I just bought this online, having fallen for one in the wrong size in an actual shop - the sizing was absolutely enormous, to the point where you could have fitted two good-sized women into the L.
