Scandinavian coats

CruCru · 10/11/2016 12:17

At the start of winter every year I start thinking about getting myself the sort of warm Scandinavian coat that they wear on Fortitude. Every year I decide that I probably don't need a coat that is good down to -32C.

However, I do rather like this. It is rather expensive but then, so are these.

Is there anything else I should look at? I'm thinking a proper, luxurious coat.

I've just ordered this.

I have a discount code so it was about £140 in the end. If it isn't quite right, I can always send it back.

SuperFlyHigh · 13/11/2016 12:21

For almost £500 I would want that coat to sing and dance for me!

officerhinrika · 13/11/2016 12:29

I was just going to suggest Lands End! I have a large collection of their coats for all occasions - it's years since I bought one anywhere else. Their stuff works and is good value for money. My sister spent a few years in the Midwest and swears by them.

seefeld · 13/11/2016 12:35

I have a Woolrich parka. This is the third winter I've had it and it still looks as good as new. It's totally waterproof and wind proof and so very, very warm. But I do live in a country which is much colder in winter than the U.K and couldn't cope here with a normal coat.

HuckfromScandal · 13/11/2016 12:41

I think you should be banned from mumsnet for posting links to such nice coats.
I could really not justify one. But I spend way too much time outside in the cold.
If you afford - go for it - but I have removed you from my Christmas list Grin

CruCru · 13/11/2016 15:47

Dude - if you spend a lot of time outside then you need a delicious coat.

Yes, I absolutely love the Fjallraven BUT at £500, I would want to know that I would wear it from 1 December until 1 April, at least. I won't be so irritated if I only wear the Landsend one for a couple of months.

By the way, the discount codes for Landsend are "fresh" and "friends".

I must admit that I also looked into Canada Goose (which is probably more stylish - even more expensive) but they don't do my size. Probably a good thing, as it will totally break my heart to spend £900 on a coat and only wear it for two months.

Hi all

I've just had a nice reply from Fjallraven:

"Hi!

You are correct that the outer fabric is G-1000, and with the Greenland wax is it water - and wind resistant. But not water proof.
The Singi down jkt W is down-filled, so it is made for dry cold days and it is sensitive against moisture and water. Since it is water resistant the mix between snow/rain is no problem, but not if it is raining for a longer period of time.

The wax is gone after 2-4 washes and the jacket comes pre-waxed when it is brand new.

I have found these retailers on the U.K for the XL:

Above and Beyond Adventures Ltd - Cramlington
Caledonian Countywear Ltd - Fife
Caledonian Countywear Ltd - Callander
Cotswold - Malmesbury

Let us know if you have any questions and I hope you can try it at these retailers."

I have had my fjallraven coat for 8yrs, still looks new ish. I am Swedish but use it as much in the uk as "back home".

CruCru · 14/11/2016 17:27

I absolutely love what I've seen the Fjallraven coat but at that price, I think I want to be able to try it on before it gets bought. I'll see how the Landsend one is - if it is no good then I may come back to the Fjallraven one.

OP posts:
banivani · 14/11/2016 20:45

Fjällräven are a nice quality company with afaik a solid environmental policy which goes to explain the price. But I live in Sweden, in a town, and I wouldn't buy one. I don't have the right lifestyle. Down is a bit of a faff, I wouldn't go for that unless I lived some place very cold for very long. That said, those short tight light down jackets have been very popular here these last few years, especially among les femmes d'une certain age.

CruCru · 15/11/2016 14:54

So the Landsend one has arrived. I like it a lot - it isn't tight anywhere and the colour is fantastic. It has a "Landsend" logo on the arm (so it is a copy of Canada Goose / Fjallraven etc) but it looks pretty nice.

My husband expressed some disbelief that I need yet another coat and wondered if it was a bit warm (to be fair, London has heated up and is 14C today). He has, however, said that I can keep it if I want it.

Sorry, it's a lovely cozy looking jacket, but that asymmetrical pocket shenanigans makes my teeth itch Grin

goddessofsmallthings · 19/11/2016 04:42

The asymetric pockets are a practical and sensible feature - have you tried leaving your hands in straight edged pockets for longer than it takes to retrieve a phone/purse/tissues, Captain?

goddessofsmallthings · 19/11/2016 04:49

The colour is gorgeous, CruCru, and you'll get years of wear out of that jacket.

lizzieoak · 19/11/2016 04:54

Sweet Jesus that's a lot of money for a coat. I spent about that in today's money on a delicious hourglass Edwardian style cashmere coat from Hobbs once. But it was a tax refund so almost free money.

How about this www.mec.ca/en/product/5037-668/Chillshed-Parka

CaptainBumpALot · 19/11/2016 10:21

goddess, it's not the slantedness of the pockets I was meaning, it's the way the right pocket (as you look it in the photo) is positioned close under the zip flap. Grin

acurtis1234 · 19/11/2016 15:49

CaptainBumpALot The OP has just laid the coat down a bit wonky, probably the zip is undone, the pockets are completely even IRL

CruCru · 20/11/2016 08:23

Hi all

Yes, the pockets are slightly slanted - but not as slanted as they look in that photo. There's also a gap behind the pockets to put your hands when they are cold.

I bought myself a Didriksons coat after recommendations on here. It's bloody brilliant; very warm and light weight and completely waterproof. Have a look at the coats in viking kids

PhilODox · 20/11/2016 08:36

Someone talk to me about the Didriksons Angelina parka please.
I am very small in height, 10/12 clothing. Is there a petite version, or will I look like someone dressed up in mummy's coat?
I drive everywhere so cannot justify huge cost for a coat, but do spend weekends on the side of a pitch, and need to be warmer!

hollyisalovelyname · 20/11/2016 08:44

Bigbuttons which cost did you buy?

OnlyHereForTheCamping · 20/11/2016 10:54

I nearly bought a Didrikson in tk max yesterday, it was deliciously warm.

squiz81 · 20/11/2016 11:22

TK maxx stock Didrikson? This is dangerous information...how much was it?
