Curling my hair

Hi

What would people recommend as the easiest styling gadget to curl hair. I have shoulder length thick straight hair. I'm totally useless at doing anything nice with it! Have tried using my straighteners for loose curls but the few I end up with are always flicking out all over the place!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

How are you using your straighteners? I do it by holding a piece of hair up to the ceiling, straighten from root to about a third of the way down, then turn the straightener back on itself for just one turn (still clamped on hair) and glide it down to the bottom at that angle. It's a bit like holding scissors on a ribbon for curling! My hairdresser did a similar thing the other day.
