What do you wear 'off duty'?

I'm in smart business attire for work, and I've updated my work wardrobe and I'm pretty happy with it.

My non-work wardrobe is awful. I've not changed my style at all, I don't even know what my style is when I'm not at work. I hate jeans right now, straight/skinny/slashed knees can sod off. My tops are usually just old work tops that are too bobbly for work, and I wear stupid jeans with them and boots or trainers.

What do you wear for:

  • a family day trip out
  • visiting relatives
  • shopping

And where do you get it from?

Sorry, forgot to say: I shop all over- the Gap, vintage stores, Boden, Urban Outfitters, & a Canadian chain called Club Monaco.

Oh gosh knee high boots? I'm not into that look. I have a problem really as I hate to look too 'done' iyswim, but I want to look nice too. I love the idea of one casual slouch boyfriend fit jeans and a loose fitting t-shirt, with a scarf and cardigan, but I can never find exactly the right t-shirt or jeans. Everything seems to have Lycra in it.

I think jeans with a touch of Lycra are flattering as they tend to fit well everywhere. I'm from the mindset that I'd rather be over dressed than underdressed so I can't really help you with that side of things.

Seconding GAP girlfriend jeans. Comfy and flattering. Also quite like Fat Face for jeans (simple slims or skinnies).
I also love jumper dresses, tights and converse type trainers for an off-duty day.
OP I hate looking "done" too. The outfit you just described sounds great.
Converse are my bestest friend. Hair is nearly always in a messy bun. Just whack on a bit of eyeliner and youre good to go Grin.

I always return to jeans & jumpers if left to my own devices. Pumps or boots, depending on the time of year. Skinny or straight jeans & jumpers like this

Skye Batiks

I'm not sure what to make of Skye Batiks if I'm honest! Confused

Skinny jeans and a fitted t shirt. I tend to wear Bretons or plain vest tops with cardi over the top of it's colder. Not very exciting. I'm a 14-16 pear shape.

unicornsarenotjustforchristmas · 05/11/2016 07:19

Oh and I get my jeans usually from Sainsbury's (although currently sporting a primark pair). Bretons and vest tops from boden as I like their longer length. Cardigans from anywhere - primark, supermarkets, next, boden etc. Currently eyeing up a mint velvet one.

Jeans, every single day for work and casual wear. I stick to skinnies (ankle grazer with trainers, full-length with other footwear like Docs or biker boots) for looking more put together but will wear something like 501s rolled-up or GAP boyfriend jeans at home. On top I normally wear a t shirt that's stripy or plain, leather jacket and a scarf if really cold. I'm not a summer fan.

PedantPending · 05/11/2016 12:59

I am 58, I gave up jeans when I was 50.
Today, off duty, I am wearing a pair of Brax Shakira skinny trousers with a grey, cashmere cowl neck jumper. I could smarten this up for going out (daytime) with a navy, wool blazer and some flat shoes, or don another layer, walking shoes and a suitable jacket for a brisk, country tramp.
At this time of year I often wear cords or velvet trousers, sometimes even to the office ;-)
Casual evening wear, at this time of year, tends to be velvet trousers and a silk shirt plus cashmere edge to edge cardigan if chilly.

rightknockered · 05/11/2016 13:11

I used to wear jeans every day, then made an effort to stop wearing them.
Now I mostly wear dresses with tights, much easier, and much warmer oddly enough. I wear dresses that I can layer tops underneath, rather than cardigans.
I think I've worn jeans 4 times since the beginning of October, and the semester started.
I wear a coat, or leather jacket over the top. And usually trainers or boots.

MumboNumber5 · 05/11/2016 13:39

I want to move on from jeans to dresses but struggle to find any I like - is there anywhere obvious I should be looking?!

My casual wear tends to be girlfriend or skinny jeans with ankle boots, plus a cashmere or merino jumper. Good coat and bag hides a multitude of style sins this time of year Grin.

I clicked on the link and found myself saying "Oh my word!"

Allpizzas quite! Confused

FurryLittleTwerp · 05/11/2016 15:27

Skye Batiks - a bit marmite I agree! I have a couple of their fisherman's smock jumpers but a lot of it I wouldn't wear. The skirts are very odd.

JaceLancs · 05/11/2016 18:57

Jeggings or black ponte leggings, also have some that look like velvet cords
Usually with a plain cashmere or merino jumper
I sometimes wear check shirts over a plain t shirt with them
I also love a sweater dress with opaques and boots
