What to wear to a christening?

I'm going to be Godmother to a lovely little bean in November but haven't a clue what to wear!

I've been to christenings before but oddly all in the summer and never with a 'role' so I need some help please!

How 'smart'/do I wear my coat or take it off (if the latter will need something quite warm)?!

It will depend o the Church - my Church is lovely and warm so you'd not have a coat on, but I've been in some right parky old Churches in my time - you'd probably best check with the parents if you don't know the Church.

I'd go in pretty smart things myself - not showing loads of leg or chest, just 'day dress', maybe with tights / boots. If you are Godmother, you will probably be in lots of photos that get shown around at 18th Birthdays, etc - you want to look your best

Thanks! It's th church we all went to when we were growing up, not massive but I'' struggling to remember if it was warm! The font is right by the door so could be draughty but it won't be for long I guess! I'm think I need to look for something nice with long sleeves, all my dresses seem to have short sleeves.

Is the 'lovely little bean' a euphemism for an actual child being christened into one if the mainstream Christian denominations?

Or is it going to be some other sort of ceremony (was wondering about a woodland one - in which case you'll definitely need a coat)

I'd go for a silky patterned skirt and a soft fluffy sweater/jumper style top.

Do you know anyone who still goes to that church, who can tell you about the current state of the heating?

The actual bit around the font is quite short per baby, so dress for the main service (but does the church have certain Sundays where they do all baptisms? How many will be done with your godchild?)

It's Sunday-best as the general dress code, not full on smart. Do you already have good trousers or skirt you could wear with a tunic, or a top and jacket?

Following as I'm having the exact same problem!

I tried on a phase eight knitted 3/4 sleeve dress yesterday in HOF but annoyingly I can't find a link to it. It was towards the top of my budget but if I can't find anything else I was going to wear it with tights and either Chelsea boots or knee highs.

Yes the bean is a gorgeous little girl, not an actual legume!

Not sure about any other children being christened on the same day but still, it's not like we'll be there for hours!

Thanks for the 'Sunday best' rather than full-on smart moggy, that's a good pointer and will save me looking like I'm off to meet the Queen!

I have a lovely, calf-length suede skirt (black) which could look nice with a lovely top (excuse to buy cashmere jumper?!). Would that be an option?

In the past as gm, or for my own children's christenings, I've worn: black stretch pencil dress with 3/4 sleeves (john lewis); silk skirt & long sleeve top from fcuk; mint velvet stretch silk dress with long sleeves.

Thanks for this, just tried on the skirt and a top and it's not really right but now I have an idea of what to look for!
