Basic makeup

I've never been a big makeup wearer but need some basics for work. At the moment I put on some Avon concealing foundation, whack some Boots pressed powder on top and then use a bit of cheap blusher and lipgloss.

By the end of the day I look like I haven't any makeup on at all and look really washed out.

Any tips for a basic look that will last all day and not cost the earth. I can't afford really expensive things.

Have a look at Stephanie Lange on YouTube she does some great make up tutorials.
I was applying my make up 'wrong' and after following some of her tips it now stays on my face much longer.

I got a Bare Minerals starter kit a few years ago, which contains primer, mineral foundation, finishing powder, a blusher/bronzer thing, the right brushes to apply it all with, and an instructional DVD. Great thing about Bare Minerals is you need a teeny tiny amount of it to get decent coverage, and it lasts all day, so in the long run, the products last for ages. A full size pot of the foundation lasts me round about 6 months, if not a bit longer.
There is also thousands of video on YouTube which will help you apply any make up properly

Your technique should depend of your skin type.

I am not Into contouring or any of that but generally use base, powder, blusher, mascara and do my brows everyday. Days I'm off work I usually wear a bright lippie and on nights out use more products abs colour. Pixiewoo has some good basic tutorials on YouTube.

Mascara, always. I don't wear foundation but always mascara and nearly always eyeshadow.

If you don't want to make a massive investment, Boots Natural Collection is good for a couple of quid. My favourite is Max Factor Masterpiece which is a tenner.

Just checked and it's Natural Collection Waterguard which is the best one.

Ooh, I. Sneaking in on this too! In my 50s now never worn much make up, would like to wear a little so I don't look washed out but so that it doesn't look like I've suddenly started wearing it IYSWIM. Should I buy cheap first and see if I can get away with it or go for something more expensive. I'm also starting a cleansing regime for the first time, don't even use moisturiser for gawd's sake!

Nyx makeup in boots and makeup revolution and MUA both in superdrug are cheap brands but stand up very well against more expensive makeup. And now a lot of bloggers say they would use the brands. Good for experimenting if u are not confident with products or don't want to spend a lot.

If you use mascara and eyeliner/eye shadow plus lipstick, and are OK to top it all up at lunch time, that alone will prevent you from looking too washed out.

Make sure you let your moisturiser sink in properly first. 5-10 minutes.
Then primer. Give that time to dry (some stay a little tacky).
Do your makeup. Cheap brands can be fine. Avon has a fairly good rep now. And check out Make Up Revolution (superdrug and online). Unless you are blessed with fabulous dark lashes, mascara is pretty essential for helping you to not look washed out.
Then a setting spray. The Avon one is pretty good, but different ones work for different skin types.

Make sure you keep makeup brushes clean, for hygiene and better application. A damp beauty blender sponge works great for most foundations, you can even get ones in Primark (also, some primark makeup is getting good reviews. Check out the lip crayons).

jaxxyj your situation sounds exactly the same as mine. I must admit I'm getting to the stage in life when even the "beauty face" setting on my phone camera doesn't do much to disguise the imperfections.

My local boots do make up sssions and skin care that might be worth looking at. It's free and in mine there really was no pressure to buy anything at all.

With primer you put moisturiser on, then primer and then foundation/concealer. It prepares your pores for foundation

So an update... I've chickened out on the whole full make up thing, I'm concentrating on getting my skin regime up and running. I did wear some oil of ulay moisturiser with a tint in it. I bought some mascara , eye liner and cream eye shadow which I wore to a meeting today. I also wore some tinted lip balm which was a bit of a fail tbh. No one said anything at work but I'm hoping it is just so subtle and that is what I'm going for to be fair.

Well done jaxxyj - at least you've made a start which is more than I've done, although tbh I am not back at work until next week and can't be arsed in the holidays.

My nearest Boots is some distance away so I'm going there on Saturday to stock up on some reasonably priced stuff to experiment on.

That's my kinda work face & I spray with essence setting spray after and it doesn't move. Glam Life Guru is a fab youtuber. She does make up on a budget and reviews crazy expensive products. So she knows what works and I personally think she always looks fab

I'd head to Boots on a quiet morning and ask the No.7 lady to give you a basic make other/up lesson and say what you budget is and what time you have to spend...I'm sure they'd like to help.

Boots 17 foundation 25 hr wear is good but the colour selection isn't great so if you're olive skin toned or darker it won't match.

Sleek blushes are fab

Boots 17 mascara is good too.

Also essence do a lip oil which is super moisturising and I find last a long time for a lip gloss type product.
