Nail help PLEASE.....

My nails have never been really strong, but I've managed to keep them at a reasonable length, and they used to look ok. But they're getting weaker as I get older, and need more care.
Recently, my ring finger has developed a vertical ridge, and as soon as the nail grows a millimetre over the edge of the finger tip, is splits right down the vertical ridge and and I have to file it right down 😕 this keeps on happening, and it's getting worse.
I use opi Nail envy, and have for months, but it's made no difference. Can anybody recommend any miracle product to strengthen them please? Getting desperate.....

Dr Lewinn's Renunail is the best thing I found, along with a good nail oil.

I sympathise, my nails are awful. Strangely though the best thing I have found to keep them ok is gel polish like Shellac. The nail doesn't break underneath and they are neater and stronger.

Vaseline applied at nighttime. You just dot a bit on and lightly coat the nail and surrounding skin.

Leighton Denny products. His crystal nail file for filing (much more gentle especially when dealing with breaks. Used his hydra flex kit and renovate kit to get mine in order. Mine were peeling and breaking due to constant hand-wash ingredients at work. No just use the hydraflex as a basecoat as maintenance with the crystal file for filing. You can get them in m&s beauty hall.

One of mine has been like this for about 10 years. Nothing has made any difference unfortunately, so I just keep it short.

You could just have one acrylic nail put on, or a clear gel layer.

Are you hypothyroid? This can cause vertical nail splits.

Would also add only use acetone free nail Polish remover too, any brand will do. (Apologies for typos in previous post: autocorrect and new phone gaa!)

I think nails can show up a medical condition. My mums nails bend like spoons. She has both diabetes and thyroid and it's a sign of one or the other. Can't remember which. You should Google it and get it checked out. Nails can often show health issues up.

Thanks very much for all your replies.....I hadn't considered gel polish.....does that not damage your nails? It's worth thinking about.....

Thanks Never....I'll do that too. My sister has an under active thyroid, but I hadn't thought of that.

Properly applied and removed gel is fine, thinking you can pay £20 for it and get results is bu.

IBX do an in salon treatment to repair nails, it's about £15 as a stand alone treatment.

I'm trying to grow my nails back having had gel polish and /or acrylic nails for years. I've found that in order to maintain the strength to grow with the flexibility to bend without snapping I need to use two products together, both Sally Hansen and both available in Boots and Sainsbury's. First apply the Maximum Strength treatment, let it dry which takes very little time, then the Hard as Nails Hard as Wraps gel. They have so many with similar names but these are the ones! You can remove them easily with acetone free remover and you can paint over the top if you wish. I had a vertical split and it's now gone, thank goodness. Good luck!

Sally Hansen nail oil is brilliant - mine sometimes peel into layers, and if I cut them really short and rub in nail oil at night they get better quickly. If only I weren't so lazy that I only do it when they're already wrecked!
