Eczema in hair please please help

So having just had my hair coloured I bought the recommended shampoo and conditioner, aveda colour conserve ....

I have suffered on and of with eczema but not for about 15 years. I now have noticeable red cracked skin around ears hairline and my face is flaring up round my eyes and cheeks. My lovely Dh even commented

I know what has worked on my skin in the past -clarins sensitive skin range. Has anyone got any suggestions of what I can use on my hair? Please?

I used the aveda stuff 4 times. Dreadful stuff

I usually recommend the Lush Soak n Float shampoo bar as it is the only thing that successfully cleared up the eczema in my hairline/behind my ears. However the last few times I've been to buy it, it's been out of stock due to a shortage of one of the ingredients so you may have trouble getting hold of it. I've been using one of their other shampoo bars as an alternative (I can't remember the exact name but it had Honey in the title). This has been fine but not sure what it'd be like at clearing up eczema as I don't have any at the moment. The other alternative is the Body Shop Ginger shampoo. I've also used this and it was ok but I prefer the Lush. Others rave about it though....

Try Neutrogena T/gel therapeutic shampoo. It's specifically for scalp dermatitis and eczema on the scalp.

It could be that you have had an allergic reaction to the dye or the Aveda shampoo.
You can take anti histamines to help with the redness and itching. Your doctor can prescribe a mild steroid gel for your skin and eyes which should clear it up. They can also provide an oral corticosteroid which you can take for a short period if your flare up is bad.

It might be worth asking at a chemist, e.g. Boots, as it's the weekend. The pharmacists are usually really helpful in advising over the counter treatments which don't need a prescription.

Thank you we have a really good local chemist I will go and have a chat with them. I do think it is a reaction to the products not the dye as it has taken about 2 weeks to flare up ....

What do you normally use OP? It should be ok to use with the coloured hair. My hair is coloured and I use whatever is on offer on it.

You could have sebheoric dermatitis, and that could be spreading to your face. I have it on my scalp, and l have yet to find anything that works on ii in terms of a shampoo.

Betnovate scalp solution on prescription is the only thing that has any lasting effect, but you can't use it every day.

My DS uses Junior Oilatum shampoo. Or you could try Green People's No Scent range. I think you need to go really gently until it sorts itself out.

I would use an eczema cream on the scalp before bed and wash it off / wash hair in the shower in the morning until it clears up.

Avoid styling products as they could irritate any inflamed or broken skin until it clears up.

Dermax therapeutic shampoo for scalp, Dermal 500 for face and ears. They're both behind the pharmacy counter. I had to see a Dermatologist for acne and dermatitis (peri oral and seb) and these are what he recommended. It does sound like it is spreading to your face, I have had a similar experience.

IME a pharmacist will recommend poly tar or similar, which can make dermatitis on scalps a lot more sore. Essential oils are apparently an irritant for dermatitis etc, so that could be the issue with Aveda.

Apple cider vinegar applied neat to the affected area for a few days.

Then drinking 1.5 spoonfuls (diluted) of ACV everyday. Completely cleared up my dry scalp issues.

I found that Betnovate only lasted about 10 hours. I used to put it on at night and wash my hair in the morning. By 6pm the crusting would be back.
I had what felt like cradle cap that was all over my scalp, ran down my neck and all down my back and had patches on my face and all over my body.

What eventually cured me was cutting out wheat and dairy.

I can't dye my hair as the only dye I used to be able to use has been discontinued

You might give the Elvive Men's shampoo a try, the orange and black one.
It's worked miracles on ds's scalp (and eyebrows), after lots of posters on here recommended it to me. It worked within 3 days, after several years of chemists, prescriptions, steroids. Doesn't smell too manly, and it's quite conditioning too.

Hello, I have eczema and sometimes get flare-ups on my scalp too. For usual use I use antidandruff shampoo. I used to use Head and Shoulders but I'm about to switch to Superdrug's own make and hope that doesn't harm my eczema, in theory it shouldn't because all shampoo marketed as antidandruff has to contain zinc pyriothione in it which is clinically proven to help treat dandruff which is essentially just eczema anyway. That's what I normally use but if I do get a flare-up for whatever reason, then I would switch to something stronger so my next port of call would be Oilatum shampoo. You can get this OTC or on prescription. If that still hadn't sorted the problem then my next step up would be Polytar, again you can buy OTC or get it on prescription. If that STILL didn't solve it then you really would need to see GP.

Also sometimes if I get bad eczema around my hairline/near ears I will use hydrocortisone on it to clear it up quicker. Obviously you can't really put it all in your hair but you can use it on the skin around your hairline if that's really red and sore/flaky. Make sure you use it sparingly as it's a steroid. You can buy this OTC or get it on prescription, GP can prescribe stronger strengths than in the OTC ones but given proximity to the face I would imagine a weak strength would be preferable anyway.

I recommend Nizoral, it cleared my dermatitis (caused by a reaction to dry shampoo)

Yes Nizoral, very good and no longer prescription only. Clears up my scalp eczema very egfectively.
