At home eye lash/brow tint

I've got nice long eye lashes but over time they've faded and I have extremely hectic life style so applying mascara every day is not an option. I'm looking to get some ideas on eye lash tints that I could do at home. Many years ago I tried eye lash tint in the salon but it didn't work very well, I'm hopeful that now it's 21st century there might be a product out there that would give me dark lashes and last a while.

Salon - definitely. I have tried all of the brands available in Boots/Superdrug for home brow tinting and none of them work that well, no matter how long I leave them on. When I go to the salon it's £7 to have my brows tinted, it lasts 10 -14 days and I am in and out in 5 minutes. They do a much better job than I do as well, because it's much easier to paint the 'shape' on to someone else who is laying nice and flat in front of you, as opposed to trying to do it yourself in a mirror and the nightmare of getting both brows to match.

Get the Strictly Professional stuff from Amazon - it's what they use in the salons. You need tint plus developer. I have done my own since I was 15!

I use refectocil, another professional product available of Amazon (you need the colour tube and the developer solution). It is very easy and quick to do at home. The stuff is dirt cheap. I use the light brown (shade 3.1) for my brows and the blue black for my lashes (shade 2).

I use strictly professional from amazon or ebay. The ones you get in boots no longer work since a magic ingredient was removed.

Can I ask why do you tint eyelashes if you put mascara on?
Never done it myself so wanted to understand the reason?!

I'm on an economy drive, so I currently do my brows and lashes myself.

I use the pro stuff I bought from Amazon. That said, I have had them done at a salon hundreds of times, and have paid attention to how they do it.

My method for lashes is to do one set at a time i.e. Bottom right, then bottom left etc. for me, the thing which works the best is to use one of those small in between tooth brushes. I tried a brush, a mascara brush, a cotton brush, but the mini brushes gave me the best finish.

I use a wax based balm under my eyes and round my brows to prevent smudging. With brows, I've also tried loads of techniques, and have eventually settled on a toothbrush. I use the balm, then brush the brows up using a dry brush, before brushing though with the dye. I use a dark brown for my brows (which are naturally dark anyway - but now have loads of white hairs) and black for my lashes. My brows are fairly thick, so I just tidy up round the edges with tweezers every week.

I do a patch test every few month, just in case, and take my time in doing them. It usually takes me around 45 minutes. But I work slowly and carefully. I would recommend a salon if you want them doing quickly, or for a first time.

Another time - the tint helps your lashes 'show', especially if you're fair. So if you want to skip mascara during the daytime then you can do because the darker tint on them has the effect of very subtle daytime mascara already. However if you want even more defined lashes then you apply mascara, as the fibres in the makeup help to lengthen the lashes and provide more definition for a more specific look.

I dye my lashes & brows because they are a mix of shades, like paul says, so the pale grey hairs look like bald spots if they aren't dyed. The tiny picks up every tiny hair and makes your lashes/brows look lusher.

It's like hair dye, the longer you leave it, the darker it gets. My advice would be to exercise caution on your first attempt with timings and don't go for the full 10min development time. You can always go back in if they aren't dark enough on the first go.
