Grey roots cover up bands or scarfs

I can wear a hat in my private life but not for work.

I have to look presentable for work so i cannot have visible roots as my appearance matters.

I tried growing my grey roots out before by dying my hair lighter so as to make the contrast less but it looked just as awful. The hair at my roots seems to have lost all reddish pigment and is quite dark interspersed with all the grey hairs.

But having dyed my hair constantly for approximately 35 years I'm fed up doing so and would love to not dye it anymore.

I have a full fringe and a shoulder length Bob. My hair must be worn up for work. I can't wear jaunty coloured scarfs in my hair. I can wear diamonte clips.

I was thinking of some kind of darkish brown elastic wide headband to cover the roots on show?

Anyone got any ideas? Please!

If I start now I can wear hats until spring, giving my hair a decent growth of roots!

I'm thinking of six months at half an inch a month will be three inches and I could contemplate having layers put in to get rid of most of they still dyed ends.

My hair does grow quite fast and as I've got older it's got quite thick. When I was young I wanted thick hair, now I've got it I don't like it!

Could I get away with that hair band and wear my hair up?

Sod it I've bought the brown one and a dark grey from another seller!

Will give it a whirl!

I just want freedom from dyeing but have given up before but now feel ready to give it a go again!

I've bought all the powders, sprays and hair mascara's ranging from cheap to expensive, in the past and they all look awful!

I only work two shifts a week so only need to cover roots at work. I wear hats anyway so it won't be a problem during the winter outside of work.

It's only during work time that I want to cover up but need to still look smart or I won't be allowed to wear it and I wouldn't be allowed to have long visible roots either.

Why can't you have roots showing at work ? It's not as if it's bright pink or something! It's your natural hair ! Is there a policy that's says that ? I grew mine out over 7 month , wore it up then chopped all the old dye out :) check out gray and proud face book group for ideas and inspiration:)

My dyed hair would be too much of a contrast. I have to look smart and good for work. Visible roots over a certain length would not be a good image.

I don't want nor do I suit short hair or I would just cut it short.

Although I am tempted to shave it off and wear a wig if I could be sure a wig would not come off at work!

When I grew out my dye & went grey (well greying - dark with little grey at the back & a lot of grey round my face) I found that the dyed ends faded out gradually without keeping being re-dyed, so the contrast became less & less & it actually looked less awful than I expected.

I kept it roughly shoulder-length & went for trims every 8 weeks. I had a longish bob with no fringe & long layers. Took two years & the worst stage I think was 10-20 weeks after the last dye job - it looked as though it needed dying, & the ends were still quite dark with an increasingly nasty reddish tint.

So glad I did it though - it looks fab now

Try 'colour before' to remove dye from the rest of the hair?

I've had the colour removed from my hair numerous times but it goes to yellow as I've dyed my hair for 35 years so am not stripping dye back to natural colour!

They dye I use does not fade so I will have a solid block of dyed hair growing down but will regularly trim it.

I'm not worried outside of work as I can do lots to disguise it. It's only my workplace that concerns me.

I might use a temporary spray just for work but would prefer not to and just cover it with those stretchy bands. It's whether they will look smart enough.

Could you afford for a clever hair person to dye you back to your root shade so the regrowth is seamless? Probably pricey, but it would solve the problem.

I've gone the just grit your teeth route. My waist length hair could now be chopped into a short bob and I would lose the contrast but I can't cope with the idea of not being able to pull it up and out of my way. Soon though. Soon.

I have salt ant pepper grey and it would be impossible to dye it to the shade of my roots. I'm 50. I've had the dye stripped a few times and tried to match a colour to my roots but because of the grey it looks even worse!

I have been thinking all afternoon about cutting it very short and wearing a wig. I am very impulsive sometimes and have ordered a wig in case I do get fed up at the roots in the future and chop it.

The wig is Show Stopper by Raquel Welch as it is a style I have had my hair and suits me. Not too long and not too short.

My tactit tomorrow at work is to say I'm growing out the dye for health reasons and will be wearing a plain band where roots show and will still be wearing my hair up.

I have failed in the past at growing the dye out but this time I seem more determined.

I think it's the right time of year.

It's only work that bothers me, I can cover up the rest of thr time quite easily. I'm outdoors everyday with my dogs so often wear a hat.

At the moment I wear my hair at work, in a twist at the back and I have a full fringe.

I'm quite excited to see what the fringe will look like as it grows very quickly.

The company!our that is coming through seems a dark ash colour devoid of any red that you get even with ash hair dyes, interspersed with white/silver hair.

My son said that he thinks it will look better when I am my natural colour all over as he reckons grey hair goes with any colour clothing!

If only if you want a going natural/grey buddy then I'm up for it! Same for anyone else who wants to start it with me!

Root growth is approx 5mm at the moment.

My hair needs to be dyed every three weeks. I can eek out another week or two with coloured dry shampoo on my parting.

I'd like to grow old gracefully, but my hair is white rather than grey.

White would be amazing!

A poster on here has grown her hair out and her photo is stunning. A white almost platinum long Bob and it is beautiful on her.

I gave in two weeks ago and coloured again, stretched to 8 weeks this time. My hairdresser refuses to cut my hair very short which will probably just leave me to hack it myself. I am sick to the back teeth of roots and panic. Cannot be arsed with months and months of blending regrowth line. I really wish I, like you,didn't have to keep up appearances at work. Good luck.

I'm in the middle of similar. My hairdresser said she could use Olaplex for around £100. It looks amazing.

Don't think work can argue with that :) at least it's only 2 days , someone used wide bands that showed the growth at the front and used a false ballerina bun to match during the grow out . It will all be worth it ! coco - we started around the same time last year ! I originally planned to keep it long but had to chop it off as the dye bit was awful !! Now growing it back , a bit messy boy I can just about get it back without a zillion hair grips !
