Have you got dyed grey hair?

I'm 31 and 70% grey, I've recently had my shoulder length hair cut to my chin and am thinking about giving up the hair dye. I'm wondering if anyone has had it coloured grey then let their roots come through and just embraced the grey colour? I hate having to colour it so often and it would be lovely to dye it one last time grey then just leave it.

You'd have to bleach your hair first I think. Sounds bonkers but it's not that straightforward. Have a chat with your hairdresser.

The problem with this is as the grey/silver dye grows out, you would be left with salt and pepper hair at the top and silver/grey at the bottom. All this grey hair dye that is very fashionable at the moment is all well and good but no-one really has natural hair that colour, after all, there isn't really such a thing as a grey hair, there are white hairs and whatever other colour your hair is, eg brown, black, blond etc. So all greying hair is a mixture of white and coloured, not grey. Having said that though, depending on your hair colour, the roots vs dyed grey hair might not be very noticeable

I let me roots grow quite a bit then had grey highlights put through it and kept it short through the growing out phase.

You'd still have a growth line, and depending on how you've gone grey, it will look more or less obvious. My hair is bright white at the front, steel grey at the back - when I grew my dye out I bleached the front white bits and colour stripped the rest

I ditched the dye a year ago. Can't say it's always been easy but I felt so much better fir mot continually worrying about roots showing and I like the freedom of fewer and cheaper hair appointments!
I can't wait for all the dye to be out. My natural colour dark with greys) is much more flattering for my skin tone then dyed ever was.
If you feel like it, try it. You can always dye again if you don't like it. I wouldn't dye it grey to tone though. I e heard it's really bad for your hair and you'll still get roots.

I'm double your age OP and I'm so tired of having my hair dyed. It's expensive and I'm now a bottle blonde which I think is more ageing than my natural grey would be.

I've been asking various hairdressers if they can do what you suggest, infuriatingly every single one says it can't be done.
My hair is shoulder length, I really don't suit short hair but I just want to have natural hair. Is colour stripping an option I wonder? May go back to the salon and ask.

I so regret starting to dye my hair in the first place.

I'm 37 and stopped dying my hair at 35. I just ditched the dye and lived with the re-growth. It wasn't too painful, but I did spend a lot of time with it tied up when it was at its worst. I am so, so pleased I did it and am sorry I ever bothered with hair dye at all now (all that money and time wasted at the hairdressers!). Go for it!

Thanks all I think I'm just going to do as tootsie did. I'm just going to keep getting it trimmed until all the colour has gone and forget the dye. It grows very fast

I did this. Although I'm nearly 100% grey on top & more salt & pepper round the back.

I had mine stripped, then dyed it with Pravana Silver, which did start to wash out, but I keep it topped up with a purple shampoo.

I went a bit OTT with the purple shampoo in this photo, but it will give you an idea.

It's grown down about 6" now.

Oh bisquit how did it look when it was stripped? I am similar, almost completely white on top

My hair is all white at the front and blond at the back, I grew it out once and it looked God awful, I looked all washed out. It needs doing every 4 weeks and it's too much hassle going to a salon so I just do the roots with Clairol and it looks nice.
It will stay dyed until the whole lot is white then I'll reconsider.

I took the plunge exactly a year ago..and I'm so glad I did! Like ODFOD I was very surprised at my natural colour...it's way different to the last time I saw it at about aged 17

The uncoloured hair is soft, and multi tonal.. some brown, some white, some gold and I like it. I had short hair but it is now just above my shoulders and I am trimming and growing it. The first 6 months WERE the worst but now I love it.

A colleague of mine (young) had hers died grey..it had to be stripped first and while it looked fab for a week or so it soon looked very dull and unhealthy, and she went back to blonde .

Only here it was a very unbecoming orangey colour when it was stripped! But a bit of dye & some toning sorted it out.

But my hair has been many, many colours (think red, blue, purple, green etc), so I do strip it fairly often!
