Castor oil is making my eyelashes grow like a mo'fo

I bought some castor oil to rub on my eyebrows in a bid to encourage them to grow a bit more. And it's working. But slowly.

A couple of weeks ago I started slapping a bit on my eyelashes too. Much quicker results. My eyelashes were always quite long but now they're almost Bambi like.

Good stuff.

Ok so how does caster oil make eyelashes longer? Eyelashes have a natural lifespan where they will fall out after a certain point, how does the oil affect the natural fall out point of the lash?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 08/09/2016 22:57

I have scabby old eyebrows but the thought of putting oil anywhere near my eyes makes me wince Confused

I don't wear make-up very often so no worries about Panda eyes but I don't fancy a greasy film over my eyes,

3luckystars · 09/09/2016 09:03

Its a tiny dot on your eyebrows, rubbed in, how would it get all over your pillow? Its .1ml, one drop.

MitzyLeFrouf · 09/09/2016 10:22

I don't bother with mascara wands or anything I just pour a little out on to my hands and gently rub it in. I do all this an hour or so before I go to bed and my pillow cases have not suffered any ill effects as a result of this regime!

I've always had a gap in my eyelashes where one hair was missing, a defective follicle or something but this lash has not only reappeared but is now longer than all the others. And I actually had a close look at my eyebrows this morning and compared them to my starting photos and there's a veritable clump of eyebrow hairs emerging on one eyebrow. This is a patch that hasn't seen hair since about 1997.

I thought about using Revitalash or one of those products but was a bit scared by some reviews that said after initially amazing result some people's eyelashes fell out completely.

P.S I've been rubbing it into my eyebrows for a couple of months so it's not an overnight wonder product.

does it have to be topical or does ingestion also work.
DO NOT SWALLOW IT. It probably won't kill you but it will clear out everything between the point of entry and the exit.

exaltedwombat · 09/09/2016 17:47

Do mo'fos have big eyelashes?

Ravenesque · 09/09/2016 17:48

Thank you so much for this thread! My eyebrows are okay, but not as lush as I'd like them to be. I'm going to start using this asap. I'd be happy to have big old Dennis Healey eyebrows, not as in that's what I'd go out with, but they could grow like that and I'd pluck them but they'd still be lush.

I'm quite excited now!

spankhurst · 09/09/2016 17:54

I've been using castor oil,on my lashes and brows for a couple of months and they are deffo more abundant.

naginder · 09/09/2016 18:01

Hi my son has lost half his eyebrow due to alopecia ARETA has anyone used it for this cause?

user1472391113 · 09/09/2016 19:48

Castor oil is an ancient treatment. Don't bother with Amazon you can buy it from any chemist.

Anothernamechanger1 · 09/09/2016 20:05

There's a website I came across whilst googling, (wellness mama) she has various natural things she makes and encourages castor oil for lashes and hair loss...... However having read through people's comments, people have said they lost hair using it (head) so perhaps patch test or do research. I'm too petrified of losing any more hair so won't try on my scalp now, but will try on lashes

ababsurdum · 09/09/2016 20:53

I've been following this with interest, thanks OP. I started using it on my brows and lashes last night. Do you use it every night?

Anothernamechanger1 I saw this website yesterday too and have just mixed some with argan oil (I had both to hand and ordered some dropper bottles from Amazon). I think patch testing on the scalp is wise. I'm going to try it on my hairline for a month or so initially and see what happens.

I imagine this is like many things - works for some and not others. Worth a try though given it's so inexpensive.

Anothernamechanger1 · 09/09/2016 20:57

Abab yes I agree about some things good for some and not others. It sounds so good though! I just don't think I can risk losing any more hair!

MoonlightMedicine · 09/09/2016 20:57

I've been using coconut oil in the same way with excellent results. And it's great for under eye circles and lines too

Lindsxxx · 09/09/2016 21:45

Anyone tried this who wears contacts?
Am worried about putting oil on my lashes when I'm wearing contacts and mine are continuous wear.....

Honeypot1 · 10/09/2016 06:45

Praise be to the powers of mumsnet! Having spent my lifetime thinking castor oil was from fish (?!) I'd baulk at the idea. But the amount of love on this thread made me google it, and my bottle arrives today! If it's not as good as Revitalash, I'll just go back to that because it definitely does some lengthening like a mofo too. I've been using it for about two months now & I kid you not, people ask me about whether my lashes are real about twice a week! Prefer the sound of a natural NON-FISH based oil though, so thanks for sharing!

Anothernamechanger1 · 10/09/2016 07:35

Anyone yet tried it on their scalp?!? So undecided about that....

Anothernamechanger1 · 10/09/2016 07:36

I wonder why some people have had hair fall out because of it when it's only an oil?

ababsurdum · 10/09/2016 10:16

Anothernamechanger1 I applied some of the blend that I made along my hairline last night. I'm going to use it twice a week and see if I notice any change. It seemed to wash out fine this morning with no residue.

Anothernamechanger1 · 10/09/2016 10:21

So you didn't notice any more come out when you washed it abab?

Couldashouldawoulda · 10/09/2016 10:37

Hmmm, I've tried this before for about a month, and it didn't seem to make any difference to my eyelashes.

ababsurdum · 10/09/2016 10:37

No more but no less either. I want to see if I can see any visible regrowth (or otherwise) and it will take a little while I think.

SpringTown46 · 10/09/2016 10:57

Doesn't it get in your eyes though when you use it on eyelashes?

Benedikte2 · 10/09/2016 11:29

Honeypot you are confusing castor oil with cod liver oil. Castor oil comes from the pods of the castor plant/tree.

This is a very old remedy. There was a guru way back in the early part of last century called Edgar Cayce - mystic I think- who advocated castor oil as a remedy for everything even cancer.
It's main use in Victorian times was as a purgative -- sounds vile as very strong. Used to give it to kids.
