Castor oil is making my eyelashes grow like a mo'fo

I bought some castor oil to rub on my eyebrows in a bid to encourage them to grow a bit more. And it's working. But slowly.

A couple of weeks ago I started slapping a bit on my eyelashes too. Much quicker results. My eyelashes were always quite long but now they're almost Bambi like.

Good stuff.

Does anyone know the science of this, does it have to be topical or does ingestion also work. I have recently started DH on fish oil capsules: I did it for joints, but will it have hair-restorative effects too?

Pisssssedofff · 08/09/2016 09:24

Apparently it works once a week on your head too, I am desperate enough to try it

specialsubject · 08/09/2016 09:37

No evidence at all. The massaging might help. The oil sticks to the hair and makes it look thicker. The oil and washing could also be clearing infections.

Regaine works. Changing the life cycle of hair follicles is otherwise not happening.

Pisssssedofff · 08/09/2016 09:57

Do you think it would work if you just wanted longer hair rather than needed it to fill patches or grow new hair ?

GrandMarmoset · 08/09/2016 16:11

As someone else said, Vaseline works just as well. Basically, it seems anything oily does the trick.

Buck3t · 08/09/2016 16:22

Ladies please don't gentrify Caster Oil, black hair products already cost a fortune.Wink

Buck3t · 08/09/2016 16:24

PS: yes it does work with volume and hair growth. And yes it does stink.
It works in hair warm as well (the unrefined kind, but we used to get that direct from Jamaica).

ShiroiKoibito · 08/09/2016 16:26

Nanolash - the price of it!!

Barksdale · 08/09/2016 16:28

It probably works by conditioning the hairs and making them less likely to break and fall out. Therefore overall lashes are less sparse and seem longer.

AdoraBell · 08/09/2016 16:32

My mother used to use it in our ears, because my sibling had impacted wax, never thought of using it on eyes.

Just ordered myself some castor oil off eBay on the back of this thread. Am I just putting it on like you would eye makeup remover with a cotton wool ball?

Anothernamechanger1 · 08/09/2016 16:51

In desperate enough to try it on my scalp! I read an article today about it on some natural website type. I read if your using it on eye lashes use a clean mascara wand.

ShiroiKoibito · 08/09/2016 16:56

castor oil costs around £2 and will last as long (probably longer for me, as i will forget to use it in about a week)

LikeDylanInTheMovies · 08/09/2016 16:59

I read that as Castrol first time round and had visions of you rubbing car engine oil into your eyebrows!

TeddyIsaHe · 08/09/2016 17:16

Am I the only person tempted to use this on my legs to see just how hairy I can get them? And then surprise my DP one day with excellent hairy trousers? Just me...? I think I maaaay have been on maternity leave too long, lazy days are turning me bonkers!

Thanks for the tip op, I'm going to start with my horribly sparse eyebrows!

2kids2dogsnosense · 08/09/2016 17:30

April It worked on your hair?!

Thanks for the tip - my hair is really thin due to my stupid thyroid and my even more stupid auto-immune condition. I'll order some straight away.

(And can I say how relieved am that I don't have to drink it - that stuff makes me bowk!)

Thank you OP for starting this thread - I love you and I want to have your children! (Just for half an hour or so . . . Grin)

Dancergirl · 08/09/2016 18:00

Great thread, thanks OP.

I've ordered some too to use on my eyebrows. How do you apply it?

3luckystars · 08/09/2016 18:05

Just rub it in at night.

derektheladyhamster · 08/09/2016 18:09

Just a word of caution, I came out in really bad cystic acne due to caster oil. I'm really sensitive to it. Took about 6 months of prescribed medication to clear it.

Anothernamechanger1 · 08/09/2016 18:26

Derek where were you applying it to come out with the acne? Iv suffered in the past with my skin (had roaccutane) and wouldn't want to go back.... But then I'd rather spots than be bald if it works!

TheDowagerCuntess · 08/09/2016 19:29

So rub it in at night, and then what - grim pillowcase in the morning, and slimy face from grim pillowcase?

TheDowagerCuntess · 08/09/2016 19:31

Sorry re dull practicalities post ^^ but so many of these amazing tips I end up not doing, for reasons like this (see: sleeping with latest amazing elixir on hair).

Fairyliz · 08/09/2016 21:43

I'm in my late 50's and my eyelashes had got very thin so I started using castor oil about 6 months ago. It took about three weeks before I noticed any difference but my eyelashed are definately longer.
After a few weeks I thought I would try it out on my dry flaky nails which would break off before growing. I rub a couple of drops each night before bed and they are much better. I had to buy some new nail scissors and actually start cutting my nails for the first time in about 10 years!
I think its fabulous stuff considering the price.

Debbiedoradooo · 08/09/2016 22:43

Anyone suffering from hair loss, Indian head massage is great for stimulating growth due to the increase in blood but if you go to an aromatherapist they can use specific oils to stimulate the follicles. You can buy disposable mascara wands to put the castor oil on your eyelashes and brows
