Can it be done?

I've realised during the last few months that my makeup style has been more or less the same for many many years and I'm bored.

I've bought lots of new stuff to try out and watched a few hundred videos but still my makeup looks the same as always, unless I go way heavier on the eyes and then i look like a drag act or vampire film extra.

Has anyone been able to break old habits with makeup application or do you tend to adopt the if it ain't broke approach?

Suggest not trying a drastic change all at once.

I went initially from no make up to full face and it was scary for other people.

Less is more.

I find Lisa Eldrige's(sp?) YouTube channel is really useful if you want to vary your look.

So many YouTubers basically do the same look over and over but with different colours on their eyes and lips. Lisa does loads of different styles so there is a true variety to choose from.

I don't like to wear too much makeup, especially heavy foundation. I'm fortunate to have inherited good skin genes (albeit showing signs of age now) and I look weird even to myself if I put too much on.

I've watched quite a few lisa eldridge videos but not come across anything different really. Any tips on what I should be searching for please?

I suppose it depends on what it is you are looking for. She has a video contrasting eastern Asian make up trends with western ones.

She also has a newish video focusing in bright lips and very minimal eye make up.

Do you know what it is you are hoping to achieve?

A lot of YouTubers are very much in for the full fave, contour and very over done eyes looks atm. They look amazing but I just couldn't be bothered with doing that. I find Lisa looks more varied in general and much more achievable

Quite a natural look I suppose but my tired old eyes do need some definition to stop me looking ill. I'd like to look natural, youthful and stylish

I don't really think there's much you can do to look that different if you're going for a neutral look. It's all just going to be a brownish eyeshadow,mascara,nude lip. You can change the shade of blush-pinky/peachy,add some liquid liner and a different coloured lip but whenever I try something new it never really looks that different. I think it's all a con to make you spend more

I think it should just be about enhancing your natural features so for me,the make up I've been using for last few years is tried and tested and what suits me best.

I do a small kitten (not cat as it is tiny) flick with eyeliner. I think it makes a difference to the overall shape of my eye and makes me look different. The line starts mid way across my eye. Is this something you have tried before?

How about using a brightening primer such as the Becca? I also don't like slot of makeup so wear the Becca primer as my base it gives me a 'lit from within look'

my colouring is bland neutral. I have fair/medium skintone with slightly pinky red cheeks, grey/green eyes with bits of blue and brown in them (think pool of sludgy water) and light brown hair with bits of gold and copper through it.

I think I should try some different eyeshadow styles maybe? My go to has always been 2 shades of neutral brown with brown liner smudged across top lashes, brown eyeshadow at lower lash line and mascara. I think I need to stay away from anything shimmery on the eyes due to my aging eyelids.

Please don't avoid shimmer! The new shimmers look lovely on eyes and faces of all ages. They can be used sculpt the eye and face. The shimmer these days is very fine and sits close to the skin, so it doesn't accentuate texture flaws (for want of a better term). Matte eyes are nice, but they are more technical to apply and can end up looking muddy. Sheer shimmer is divine.

Oohhhhh I'm intrigued now puerto. Do you have any links or tips for me please? I've been trying to do natural looking foundation but with matte eyes it looks a bit weird.

Are you anywhere near a Bobbi brown counter? They do free make up tutorials, I had one for eyes last month and she was great learnt some new tips and no obligation to buy anything.

I use Benefit Gimme Brow ( a tiny mascara for eyebrows) and I use only this on top of my foundation to give myself a clean natural look.
(Ok, and a bit of lipfinity when someone cute is in the office! )

Sorry I'm so late getting back here. Bobbi Brown is exactly what I was thinking of when I said the new shimmers are beautiful. Laura Mercier also has some beautiful ones.

Go for a lesson but you don't have to buy everything. Buy only what you love.

There is a small debenhams and a house of fraser within reasonable driving distance. Might I find a bobbi brown in one of those or are they usually in bigger stores like selfridges?

I vary my makeup look quite a lot from day to day - it helps if you mix your hair up a bit too. Few 'looks' I've gone for recently:

Green and gold smokey eyeshadow with a nude lipstick and black eyeliner - colours from one of the urban decay vice palettes

Neutral eyeshadow (from urban decay naked 3 I think) with navy flicked eyeliner and a deep plummy lipstick (urban decay afterdark)

Softly smoked cranberry eyes - used Anastastia Beverley Hills Modern Renaissance palette - with black flicks at the top, burgundy pencil on the bottom and a matte mauve lipstick

Warm, soft orange/rusty tones (also from the modern renaissance palette) with a light lipstick

Classic black cats eyeliner with red lipstick - I use clinique pretty eyes liner and either urban decay or mac Ruby Woo for red

bold colourful eyes - mermaid colours, turquoise blending in to purple - with a nude lipstick

Purple/plum cut crease eyeshadow with mauve lips

Nude (pink toned) lips and coloured eyeliner - I have green, blue and purple.

I also vary my foundations a bit, so sometimes I use ones which are more matte and other times much lighter and more glowing. I also sometimes use highlighter, vary which blusher (I have some which are very light and others a bit more intense), and change my hairstyles quite a bit.
