I had another thread about me losing hair. Iv had a very stressful few months and wasn't looking after myself aswell as I normally do. It's the crown and at the side although it's the crown that is the worse and more on one side. Iv over hauled my diet and taking various supplements (upped my iron big time etc) I have been using rogaine for women for approx 2 weeks each night and using the plantur 39 shampoo. I don't think it's coming out as badly as it was and I know it will take a few months before the hair grows back. What shampoos/tonics have you used that have helped please?

Iron and iodine. Check your thyroid function. Since my medication was increased my bald spots are (VERY slowly) filling in again.
Also ditched all silicones, parabens and sulphates in hair products and air-dry whenever possible. Avoid all dry shampoo as it builds up, causes irritation, promotes fungal growth and clogs the hair shaft.

Thanks just, thyroid was also fine. How would I know how much iodine to take? I don't use dry shampoo as I don't like them. The only trouble is I can't find a 'natural' as in no paraben etc shampoo that is nice in my hair? Currently using the plantur shampoo anyway.

Your thread has inspired me to sort my hair out. It's been thinning gradually for a while now but I've been trying to ignore it! My blood test came back as ferritin levels 39 which gp said was 'normal' but I've also read that levels need to be over 70 to stop shedding and even higher for hair re growth so I've started taking ferrous fumarate. I bought it off amazon. No stomach complaints as of get.

I'm also using the plantur shampoo which is making my hair look shit (stringy and lank), I'm used to using volumising shampoos but I'll persevere.

Hi retainer, I'm determined to sort mine. I know it's shallow but my hair is my only 'luxury' and have always had nice hair so it's hit me hard Esp as its not just thinning, you can see my scalp at the back and really hard styling it to hide it. I'm using the plantur 39 for coloured hair, have you tried that one? I too am used to volumising type shampoos etc so struggling to the adjustment but then I'd rather stop the balding then have voluminous hair if you see what I mean?

I don't colour my hair so I've just been using the regular plantur. I think my hair loss is generic-my mum and nan have got thin hair,my dad's completely bald,my brothers not far off so I've got no hope really!

I only notice the hairs shedding after I've washed it. I brush my hair through and about 20 stands come away and then there's more in the brush. I do think this has lessened since starting the fumarate.

I'll move on to the minoxidil if I need to put thought I'd start with my iron levels. Thank you for starting this thread,it's been a big help. It's really unnerving to see so many hairs fall out. My hairs bob length which is much easier to manage,I'd love it a bit longer but it just gets straggley.

I only suggest the coloured one because it sounds more moisturising than the normal one? Just been to the health shop and they say ferris sulphate is the same thing as iron (I didn't know this!) and that taking large amounts via tablet form, a lot of it you won't digest and that liquid form is better. I take feroglobin. She also suggested something called flurosene from lamberts and says good so I'm ordering some of that!

The loss is worse. It was just at the back on the top with a 'thin' area at the front, having had a look just now and I can see most of my scalp and I only have a thin covering of hair but as my hair is long I have plenty of 'bulk' from ear level down?! I don't want to cut it. That isn't an option unless I lose it badly.

I know this isn't a long term solution but coloured dry shampoo is good for disgusting your scalp-just spray and gently rub into the roots.

When mine was really thin last year I bought some wide jersey headbands for a few pounds off eBay, as a temporary measure. They took the pressure off a bit as they cover most of your scalp, and you can sweep your remaining hair back to cover your crown if it's a problem area. I wore them at home and at work. They stopped me fretting quite so badly about how I looked. Might that work for you, while you get things sorted?

i got some Nioxin from TK Maxx too, I think it really has helped thicken my hair. Good luck x

Thanks retainer, I got these 'fibres' off eBay that are specifically made for where you can see scalp but it's in a shaker pot like you would get talc in and it goes everywhere and I can't do the back properly.

Speckldy I was just thinking about those old school hair bands that were sort of zig zag plastic? But I'm sure they all prob hurt! The jersey ones are a good idea but I'd probably look stupid in them, but I will get some to try definitely.

It's made me so sad, I thought it was reducing how much came out but it obviously hasn't and is so thin all over the scalp but not the very top section of the hair? So I'm wearing it in a plait and combing the hair so it's evenly covered and spraying it but I dont know how long that will last. I won't put it up in a pony tail or anything as that area is the worse, at the roots.

Dark is that a shampoo? I'm using the regaine foam and have been for about 4 weeks and plantur 39 shampoo. Haven't seen any change just worse.

If your hair is coloured you want Nioxin System 4. You can often buy litre bottles on eBay for about £25, which is waaaaay cheaper than salon prices. I use it along with Regaine.

Regarding Regaine - hang in there. I'm 5 months in and had a Dermatology review today, and apparently there are some signs of new growth, as well as the reduced shedding which I'd spotted already. My hair is definitely thicker.

What benefit would the Nioxin be for me though? Do you think 4 weeks of using the plantur 39 shampoo is enough to have noticed a difference if it was going to work? It's the caffeine in it that stimulates the roots.

The regaine says only use half a capful of the foam a day but it just isn't enough!!! It's so hard to get it in the right place, which now is probably a good 60% of my scalp

It plumps up each hair and is supposed to clean out hair follicles to promote growth.

Are you parting your hair repeatedly to get the foam to your scalp?

I'm finding the back hard to get to. I use a mirror from front to see te back. I need far more than they say! Only half a capful? I section it and clip it out the way?

Have you watched the application video on the Regaine website?

Yes I have watched it. I just seem to need loads of it?

I suffered from bad scalp eczema and alopecia- about 9 years ago, but also found that nioxin shampoo and conditioner really helped. Also got it cut into a bob to avoid tying it back and exposing the thinnest parts- my hairdresser at the time was really good at advising how to cover it best.

I read that hair loss can temporarily get worse when you use minoxidil as the new hair cycle starts the new hairs push the old hairs out.

I thought mine was worse at the 4-week point, yes.

Anothernamechanger1 · 09/09/2016 05:42

Really?! Oh I hope that is the case with me. It's wierd as it certainly wasn't coming out any quicker, if anything I thought it had slowed down but when I was lifting the sections yeaterday to do it'll put the foam on I was distraught!

Speckledy when did you notice new growth? There's definitely nothing new there at all yet. My hair normally grows very fast, my hair dresser always comments on that too. I bet that will be irrelevant for new hair though!
