DD2 has the world's heaviest period and it looks as if someone has been murdered in her room. Have just stripped the bed and she is cleaning the carpet. Why does she have to go through this every month? The doctor will only prescribe mefenamic acid, which has no effect whatsoever, apart from to prolong her periods by about five days. Any suggestions? DD1 not quite as heavy, but gets really bad cramps. Would doctors fit the Mirena, do you think? Sad

MrsWobble3 · 10/09/2016 10:52

Thanks Rose. Interesting that your ds2 had the same impression. I think in general that everyone is a fan of where they went which suggests that the most important factors are the people you meet and experience you have - neither of which are easily showcased on an open day. And as with so many things in life it seems like the amount of research and angst that goes into the decision is completely disproportionate to the outcome.

motherinferior · 10/09/2016 11:05

Hello, MrsW, I remember you from way back. I haven't met you but I think friends have, at City meet ups?

MrsS, I suggest the pill. Certainly for DD1 and you may get it prescribed for DD2 - friend has, for daughter slightly younger with similar issues. This isn't liveable-with.

Lalsy · 10/09/2016 11:11

Agree it is not liveable with, MrsS. Girls that age do get prescribed the pill (and possibly other things) for that.

MrsWobble, yep exactly, be sooo much easier if you could say on open day right will you be my friend for three years then and can I have this bedroom and that seminar tutor, sorted! Grin

Auriga · 10/09/2016 11:21

MrsW, everyone we spoke to was helpful and she came away with a good impression. I agree, though, that the open day can only be a little snapshot. But there were loads of helpers in evidence everywhere. They squeezed her into the subject talk, although I hadn't been able to book it. The special needs guy was particularly knowledgeable.

For DD I'm hoping the open days will start her off thinking about what's important to her. She's found all the online information too overwhelming & just gone into avoidant mode, so I want to free her up a bit.

I do tell her she'll probably enjoy it wherever she goes but, in the unlikely event that she doesn't, she can move (as two of her cousins did).

Rudy, the academic stuff will seem so unimportant in a few years. DNephew missed most of a year at school (nowadays we can't easily remember which year). He still hadn't caught up a couple of years later but is healthy, at university and on track for a first.

MrsWobble3 · 10/09/2016 11:29

What talk was that Auriga? One of the biggest disappointments for dad was that due to being misdirected they arrived 5 mins late for a talk - weren't allowed to slip in at the back and weren't allowed to rebook for a later one as they'd 'already been given a place'. It couldn't really have been more off putting - and then the subject talk began by the lecturer announcing that it was scheduled for 40 mins but he wanted a break so would only spend 20 and they could get questions answered elsewhere (unspecified). It really bore no resemblance to any sort of recruitment drive or sales pitch at all.

Rosebag · 10/09/2016 11:50

That doesn't indeed sound disappointing MrsW I guess you just got a bad egg.

MrsS of course DD doesn't have to tolerate this. My DD has been on the pill for a while for heavy, painful periods and the tendency to cystitis around period time. It's made such a difference. She still takes paracetamol on the first day or so, for cramps but they respond well to it, and she hasn't flooded the bed in ages. She still puts a towel down over the sheet at period time, though. Hasn't done much for PMT though... Hmm

Collymollypuff · 10/09/2016 12:04

MrsS, pill taken here for period pain too - acquired from local family planning clinic. Auriga, your last paragraph is spot on and so helpful. Ds has had ups and downs, and it's surprising how many people have now recounted stories of repeated years and academic gaps with absolutely no harm done. No-one tells you, until stuff happens, that a linear path is by no means the only option.

Welcome, MrsWobble. Thanks

bigTillyMint · 10/09/2016 12:06

MrsS, my sympathies for your DD2 - that was my life as a teen. Pill helped marginall (but they may be better formulated now). It got better when I got pregnant with DDGrin

MrsW, that sounds poor and in complete contrast to the one uni day/talk that I went to with DD. But maybe it was just bad luck/he was having a bad day!

Collymollypuff · 10/09/2016 12:20

The GP used to tell me as a teen that it would get better "when I got married and had babies". As a feminist I was fucking furious mortally offended. However....it did happen.

Lalsy · 10/09/2016 12:21

I thibk different departments do have different atmospheres/ethos - they are of a scale where that could happen IYSWIM. We went to one where the lecturers refused o use the mike as it spoiled the atmosphere even tho people were telling them they couldn't hear. That spuds awful MrsWobble and would put me off That dept. Auriga, yes helping dc think and chat through is a really good reason to go to open days. Sorry about strange typing from phone.

wordassociationfootball · 10/09/2016 12:26

Layers potaters!

Am working in local library where thank goodness the berk hurr-herring at YouTube pranks has naffed off

DH update: ADs and down to 2 days a week at work both for review in a month. It's progress but as in vol sector, finances....blah.

Flora me too big flary ribs.

6 - 6.30 I hope. (Jump suit. Chin Spot. Excitable amount of slap) Can't wait to meet you Crem, and Hatty.

MrsSchadenfreude · 10/09/2016 12:26

Talking about period pain, I have it with a vengeance today. Have had Nurofen and co-codamol and nothing is touching it. Hopefully it will be gone later. Am definitely coming tonight, even if still in pain.

MrsSchadenfreude · 10/09/2016 12:28

The pill helped me, but it was a bit trial and error to find one that didn't make me cry all the time or turn into a snarling harpie

CointreauVersial · 10/09/2016 12:53

Poor DD, MrsS - must be miserable to deal with that as a teen. My periods were lighter than light, and the pill reduced them to practically nothing....right up until my 40s when they went nuclear, but at least one is equipped to cope with it by then (not that it's any more fun). DD1 seems to be much the same; her biggest problem is getting caught short with no sanpro while out and about - she's such a space cadet she hasn't cottoned on to the fact that you need to keep something with you when you are due on, and during. I've lost count of the number of mercy dashes we've made into forrin pharmacies and random corner shops. DD2 (13) hasn't started yet, but it won't be long, I'd say.

bigTillyMint · 10/09/2016 13:01

DD is saying she has period pains today too. But she has an implant FGS!

MI, I am getting the tights out next!

addle · 10/09/2016 13:10

what on earth does one wear to be glamorous in this weather that can't make up its mind and is simultaneously cold, muggy, (occasionally warm) and sporadically rainy?

re unis - DS was left entirely on his own staying the night at Durham - sitting in his room trying to watch an England match on his phone. I was v unimpressed and felt terrible about having represented it as a fun outing but then he was really really impressed by the subject experts (economics) and still wants to put it down ...

looking forward to seeing everyone

Cremolafoam · 10/09/2016 13:12

Morning(just) crepeys.

Woo see u all later!!!

Addle wear anything. Whatever you want.
Mrs S, wretched for dd. I know another teen in same sitch. Now on pill and a little better.

bigTillyMint · 10/09/2016 13:17

addle, that was character-building experience for him - he is obviously pretty resilientSmile

Cremo, the rain doesn't seem too bad here ATM. Fingers crossed!

CointreauVersial · 10/09/2016 13:19

I have had blissful bath, and am about to paint my nails. This will necessitate at least an hour parked on the sofa doing nothing while they dry. What a hardship. Wink

motherinferior · 10/09/2016 13:29

Off to the BL. See you later!
