Please come and tell me about Converse type trainers

Hello,
I feel I need to get myself a pair of converse type trainers but I'm confused. There are so many different brands, some are v expensive, do I need plain or patterned? What's fashionable/not fashionable (I'm late 40's and don't want to be mutton dressed as lamb). There are so many online places to buy them (Office, LaRedout, etc. I'm confused. Any advise?

Converse fan here especially my new mint green pair!

I live in Converse. I've tried Supergas but didn't like them, have New Balance for longer walks (and really like them) but Converse look better. I prefer the Chuck Taylor to the dainty ones. Buy them :).

I used to love converse as a student, but 2 kids later my already wide feet no longer fit. Any brand people recommend for a wider fit?

Scratch what I said about Rocket Dogs, they look nice, but I'm getting pains in the base of my heel after a week wearing them.
