12 year old boy at a wedding?

What would yours wear?

Quite a conventional family, church wedding. I've bought a really dull grey suit from Zara. Dissatisfied, was looking for a jacket and trousers but couldn't find anything. Any thoughts welcome.

Long sleeved shirt and smart trousers. A tie if you like but I wouldn't put him in a suit unless he wants to wear one.

deepdarkwood · 28/08/2016 18:08

Ds wore a suit with bright converse at the last wedding we went to :-) but he already had the suit. Otherwise I would have gone with trousers/nice chinos and shirt. John Lewis is quite good for smart stuff ime.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/08/2016 18:10

Wouldn't bother with a suit. Plain trousers plus whatever shirt he likes, plain or with a funky print. Tie only if he wants to.

Sofie88 · 28/08/2016 18:14

My ds (3) accompanied us to a wedding yesterday and he wore tan chinos, and a nice blue and white striped shirt with a pair of brown loafers. Looked lovely and smart and I think a similar combo would be fine for boys most ages. I'd only have put him in a suit if he was a member of the wedding party.

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 28/08/2016 18:16

Could he get away with chinos and a polo shirt?
Last wedding ds2 was 12 and wore a shirt, and chinos, but wedding befire he wore chinos and a hollister polo.

dontpokethebear · 28/08/2016 18:17

My son (then 12) wore smart trousers, waistcoat, shirt and tie at the last wedding he went with us to.

CMOTDibbler · 28/08/2016 18:21

My 10 year old wore a blue waistcoat and trousers, light blue pinpoint shirt, tie, and light blue converse to the last wedding. He looked really smart, but not trussed up

OlennasWimple · 28/08/2016 18:21

Another vote for chinos (navy or cream) with a smart shirt (try Next, John Lewis, Joules, Gap). Suit not necessary unless he's an usher, and then it would probably be one to match the rest of the groom's party

Chewbecca · 28/08/2016 18:21

Navy cotton trousers, a nice shirt & converse style shoes.

Loads of 'wedding' wear seems to be horrible old mans polyester style suits which I'd avoid.

Chewbecca · 28/08/2016 18:24

m&s unusually have some decent boy's trousers at the moment.

apatheticfallacy · 28/08/2016 18:30

Have you still got the suit? If you have I'd suggest that with bright, matching converse and tie, maybe a pocket square too?

Otherwise shirt and chinos

annandale · 28/08/2016 18:32

This wedding it needs to be a shirt, but chinos it is then.

Poor timing as vast acres of boy clothing has been cleared for school uniform....

My Son had trousers, shirt, tie and waistcoat. I think it looks smart but not too formal.

ButteredToastAndStrawberryJam · 28/08/2016 18:37

ps, I have it for sale on Ebay at the moment, the whole lot for £8.99! Was from BHS.

annandale · 28/08/2016 21:05

Thanks buttered, I had a look! Too small for my lad unfortunately, hope it sells though.

Thanks chew - amazing you found those, I really like them and I spent ages on the marks website, not to mention the shop today. I've got some trousers and shirt from Debenhams eventually at a price but I do like them. Suit's going back. Thanks again.

His feet are too wide for converse and budget wise it's going to have to be school shoes which is partly why I wanted to avoid the suit.

Shall I shut up now??

DS is too wide for converse too, I buy vans instead but that's not an inexpensive option. Can you find some 'bumper' style shoes in a supermarket or somewhere, some that are quite subtle? Will look better than school shoes (sorry).

ChippyMinton · 28/08/2016 23:13

Dunlop converse style from Sports Direct are cheap and come in several colours.
