Which watch do you have and do you think it's worth buying a decent one or not?

I took my watch into a jewellers yesterday who tell me it could cost ?155 to repair, they're sending it off for an estimate. If it does cost that much I'm not sure I'll pay it, I'm not mad keen on my watch anyway, have had it 7 years and have gone off it in that time.

So, what watch do you have? Can you post a picture?
Why do you have that one?
Do you think it's worth spending some money to get a decent one?
If so, which one?
If not, is there a cheaper one that you'd recommend?

TIA for all views. my old watch

I've got a rotary watch

if you can afford to repair your old watch and you like it then why not

if you can afford an even more expensive one why not again

TBH (and this isn't directed at you www) i hate the status thingy attatched to watches, all they do is tell the time fgs, its like taht watch advert "you can tell what someone is like by the watch they wear" NO you can't!!

WideWebWitch · 31/01/2007 07:46

Thanks ssd, I don't have any status attached to mine, I liked it 7 years ago, we could afford it, I bought it. I'm torn between buying a nice new one that costs a reasonable amount and will last or getting a cheap one that it doesn't matter if I lose (lost this one once and wasn't insured, not funny but ex dh replaced it)

I have two Gucci watches, both were gifts. One of which I have had for 7 years & wear for everyday use. Other than having to replace the battery once, I have had no problems with it.
My other Gucci watch is only 2 years old & only worn for best. I have had no problems with this watch either.

pinkchampagne · 31/01/2007 07:54

£155 is an awful lot of money to repair a watch! I think I would personally just replace it, especially if you're not that keen on it now

brimfull · 31/01/2007 08:29

this is mine ,nothing special, but it works for me

tissy · 31/01/2007 08:34

why not get soemthing like a Swatch? They come in lots of different styles and don't cost the Earth. I've had mine about 10 years and it's still going strong

Wheelybug · 31/01/2007 08:36

I have a Tag - it was my 30th birthday pressie from DH. I love it but am not sure it looks much different to the one I had before which was a tenth of the price (but had stopped working !). I think it works having an expensive watch for me because I'm not that 'into' watches so will probably wear it for ever and its very robust which suits me as I'm not too delicate !

DH also has a Tag (which I bought him for his 30th - my idea first btw). His has that mechanism in it which means you don't need to wind it or have a battery and quite frankly its rubbish. Its always losing time - he took it in for a service which cost something like £150 and it still does it. So this is NOT worth the money spent at all.

Don't s ee it as a status thing though.

I have an Armani watch which I've had now for 3 years. I have another one too that my grandad bought me for my 15th birthday and its still going.

I found out when I used to work for a jewellers, that Armani and some other brands are actually made by Seiko. So I guess this is why they have done so well. I also remember the costs of repairs after warranties. Not nice!

I would definatley recommend Tag Heure or Omega. Expensive but very very very good watches and their after sales and repairs centres are very good.

aDad · 31/01/2007 08:38

i dont wear one. Haven't for 15 years now.

i dont think it's worth getting an expensive one.

as tissy says why not a swatch or something?

Blackduck · 31/01/2007 08:44

Swatch - they do very nice stainless steel numbers if you don't like the plastic look....can get them quite cheap on the web, or will set you back about £45 - they take a lot of bashing and wear...

CanStarveWillStarve · 31/01/2007 08:47

I have an Ebel and love it. (Can't link to my exact watch but if you go to collections, ladies, ebel classic, mine is the 2nd or 3rd one on page 5).

fishie · 31/01/2007 08:51

i spent £200 on a watch (ellesse) 12 years ago, has cost me about £100 in repairs/batteries etc, still going fine. before that i killed a swatch about every year, so mid-price seems sensible. paul smith watches look very nice.

IdrisTheDragon · 31/01/2007 08:56

I have a watch that cost £4.99 from Argos. Stands up to all that a 3ytear old and 1 year old can throw at it, water resistant etc.

Unfortunately, DD has gone off with it (only yesterday so I have hopes of being reunited soon).

oxocube · 31/01/2007 09:08

I got a new one from Marks and Spencers for Xmas - only about 15 quid mind you so in a different price league - but I'm really pleased with it.I think their watches are pretty reliable, if a little commonplace

Kiff · 31/01/2007 09:17

I've a gucci one with an oblong face and black leather strap. Great deal of sentimental value and really like how it looks - quickest way for me to feel 'well turned out' when i leave the house. Gift from dh. I won't post a picture because I've just fallen off my chair at finding out how much it cost.

I wear a casio with the kids because it is tough, cheap, and has useful things like a night light, stop watch and alarm.

Stiglet · 31/01/2007 09:23

I have Breitling Callistino (was a present) I often get compliments about it but things like new batteries can be very expensive as it needs to be resealed by Breitling (which can take weeks) and they haven't lasted that long!
same as this

I love watches and have a few - none expensive. The one I wear the most is a Timex Expedition one from Argos, which cost 15 quid and seems indestructable!!

lou33 · 31/01/2007 09:33

i have had this one by fossil since christmas, my oh bought it for me

before that i had one by storm

i don't wear ladies watches

Imafairy · 31/01/2007 11:51

I have this one

got it four years ago from DH. It is gorgeous and classy and always gets lots of comments/

WideWebWitch · 31/01/2007 11:52

Ooh, thank you, will look at all these.
My watch was £780 when I bought it but wouldn't want to spend that again really.
Hmm.

&780! Blimey and I thought £45 was a bit pricy...(have to admit for me a watch is a purely functional item and not a statement.....)

florenceuk · 31/01/2007 13:27

I've got an Omega stainless steel watch which was a present from DH - has worked perfectly well, and looks nice. but I don't think it is a very ostentatious-looking watch, probably 1 out of 100 would actually notice the brand. However I really wish I had a nice waterproof one (but not plastic as the strap always discolours) as i am always taking this one off and misplacing it. Personally if I were buying a watch again I'd go for a Tag.

MrsBadger · 31/01/2007 13:50

I have an irrational hatred of watches from fashion houses (sorry www and anyone else), also of Rolexes - for some reason I have it fixed in my mind that they are engineering items like thermometers or barometers, not jewellery, and should be treated as such.

I wear a not especially unusual but extremely functional £40 Sekonda I've had since I was 16 and like very much - the rotating bezel is invaluable when timing things in the lab, and I like the fact that the minutes are marked.

I'm also not in any way delicate or elfin so really pretty 'bracelet' watches look silly on me - in fact I don't have a 'dress watch' at all so go without for black tie etc.

If I were to spend a lot of money on a watch I'd probably get one that looked much like the current one, but from somewhere like Breitling, Tag or Raymond Weil.
