Which watch do you have and do you think it's worth buying a decent one or not?

I took my watch into a jewellers yesterday who tell me it could cost ?155 to repair, they're sending it off for an estimate. If it does cost that much I'm not sure I'll pay it, I'm not mad keen on my watch anyway, have had it 7 years and have gone off it in that time.

So, what watch do you have? Can you post a picture?
Why do you have that one?
Do you think it's worth spending some money to get a decent one?
If so, which one?
If not, is there a cheaper one that you'd recommend?

TIA for all views. my old watch

I have a Longines one that cost about £500. I do really love it and it's one of my favourite possessions. My parents bought it for me.

My rolex keeps perfect time, it's just exactly 5 mins slow at all times!!!!

suedonim · 01/02/2007 17:35

Mine goes galloping off into the future. It really is a time-travel machine!

DimpledThighs · 01/02/2007 18:37

here is mine

classy bird I am!

I lose or kill them at an alarming rate (no pun intended) so am now only allowed this kind.

ThaNK YOu, oops, for all these. OOh, I like the Cartier tanks but no, can't stretch to that. Haven't heard yet about my watch estimate but I am coming round to a middle ground, so something nice ish but only £300 odd or something. So it'll last a while but not for ever.

I have a Tag Link with a pink face and I have to admit I bloody love it! It is my only watch, I wear it every day, even if I'm dressed up to go out.

5 years ago, for my 30th birthday I got a £100 Accurist watch. After getting it repaired for the 4th time I started looking for something new. I saw the Tag and fell in love with it before I realised what it was or how much. I thought it was complete nonsense spending so much money on a watch and kept looking....and looking....and looking. But after that I simply could not find another I liked as much. After about 6 months DH got fed up with my search for the perfect watch so while we were on holiday in Jersey (where jewellery is VAT free by the way) he took me into a jewellers and refused to let me leave until I'd bought the watch.

Aside from the pink face the one thing I love about it is the band. I'm very fussy about the bands on watches and most of them are either too tight, too stiff, too chunky, too delicate etc. The band on this one is perfect. And if I get fed up with the pink face in a couple of years they'll replace the face for a very small fee.

I have a rolex too, keeps terrible time but is very practical. Wear it all the time, swimming, saunas etc as is waterproof has a metal strap and is fairly bash proof. Have had it at least 10 years and it goes with jeans or frocks. over the years have probably got value out of it as I paid trade price for it.

handlemecarefully · 01/02/2007 20:07

I have an expensive one (Christian Dior) but often leave the house without it. I can get the time from my mobile phone or my car - think watches are fairly redundant.

kikidee · 01/02/2007 20:23

I have a Cartier Tank Francais that I got four years ago and I still love it. I wear it all the time. this one but I think this sort of thing is nice as well

WideWebWitch · 03/02/2007 19:56

Well, the jeweller called today and said it'll cost £75 to repair it so I'm going for that for the time being. I looked around a few shops yesterday for a watch and didn't see anything that really grabbed me so I think repairing it is the most sensible thing to do, even if I'm not keen on it any more. I like the Cartier tanks though, very much so next time it breaks and if I've had a pay rise by then...

oh dear

I have come back to this and looked at the new links that have appeared since I was last here... and I am having watch lust.

Sugarmagnolia, you introduced me via your link to the Tag Link Chrono... and now I want one. And they're one and a quarter thousand pounds.

Oh well, time to start playing the lottery, I suppose...

suedonim · 04/02/2007 16:21

Suejones, I agree about Rolexes being bomb-proof, even if they're bad timekeepers. I never take mine off day or night, apart from the odd occasion to clean the gunk out of the bracelet snap thingie (v technical term, that).
