Advice for yr7 - school shoes?

Those who have DDs starting secondary in September - what style shoes have you bought and where from?

My DD insisted that only brogues would do, preferably patent.
We got them from a local independent so I can't remember the brand and I'm away so can't check.

First of all make absolutely sure you know what the school rules are. They should be on the school website. DD's school is anal about footwear:
No boots
No trainers
Nothing with logos on
Must be black - leather or leather look
No high heels

DD has been wearing brogues for the last few years, and many girls wear ballet flats. I always got DD's shoes from Charles Clinkard (or Kids at Clinks) because she has very narrow feet and has to wear support insoles.

CallarMorvern · 21/08/2016 09:45

I'm a bit worried about this one, DD was bullied at primary, but she wears what she likes and doesn't want to follow others.
Her school allows anything all black that isn't a boot, most wear canvas Vans or brogues or Converse. She doesn't like Vans and has a walk to school, so canvas is going to get drenched. She has picked these....www.clarks.co.uk/p/26118936?cm_mmc=Google--Product-Listing-Ads--PLA-_-la&kpid=26118936&gclid=Cj0KEQjwouW9BRCN0ozIifTI6_cBEiQAD9gNsT0mSHeGEXIQBC05VKDVaDOeHnFFdqmYDgid9el7zwAaAgQ48P8HAQ
I'm actually really glad someone else has picked a similar style.
Bags are also a big choice, but she has gone more mainstream and picked Superdry.

RonSwansonsBestFriend · 21/08/2016 13:19

The school rules are pretty much just black, proper shoes (not trainers or flip flops etc)

She wants a slip-on, ballet pump style but completely plain?!?! (No bows).

My searching has not come to fruition, has anyone seen such a pair of shoes?

My DD has got a pair of Clarks ballerina style shoes. Very plain. She had a pair last year and they wore really well.

ShyCharles · 21/08/2016 16:11

Black leather converse

MrsT2007 · 21/08/2016 17:14

Most schools won't allow black leather converse as they're branded

Depends on her style but I'm v pleased to see DMs back in fashion as not only are they trendy but they're bloody good for growing feet too.

Ballet pumps lack arch support and can lead to plantar fasciitis (& they're crap when it rains!) unless you buy really good ones.

Brogues yes, Clarks do fantastic quality ones as did new look.

SanityClause · 21/08/2016 17:19

Ballerina style shoes are rubbish for growing feet. They basically stay on your feet because they are slightly too small. They are also difficult to do anything energetic in - even running for the bus can be a pain.

I would try to talk her out of them, if you can.

Neffi · 21/08/2016 17:35

Start-Rite Angry Angels brogues here

SavoyCabbage · 21/08/2016 17:42

My dd has Clarks brogues. Pretty much everyone had brogues or ballerinas last year but IMO ballerina shoes are not good for winter, especially if you are walking to school.

Fairylea · 21/08/2016 17:46

Dd is actually going into year 9 but since joining high school all she's worn has been Clarks brogues! Grin

eyebrowsonfleek · 21/08/2016 17:59

Dd likes Clark's Brogues. (She's been wearing the same style since y5 and she's starting y9)

Most of her friends seem to prefer brogues with a more chunky sole or patent.

eyebrowsonfleek · 21/08/2016 18:01

X-post with all of the other Clarks brogues fans. Grin

midnightmoomoo · 21/08/2016 18:12

My DD has wanted brogues for the last couple of years but neither the Clarks or Start Rite ones for her feet well enough. Frankly, I'm just grateful when we go in and have a choice of more than one pair of shoes.......

AlfrescoBalconyWanker · 21/08/2016 18:15

Someone gave me the advice to wait, buy something cheap for the first week until they check out what everyone else is wearing.

user1469680214 · 21/08/2016 18:26

We always used to be Clarks but in the last few years their quality has dropped remarkably. Now I stick with supermarket own. Brogues usually. I may have to replace them half way in the year, but they're less than half the cost but clarks only last 3 months these days.

CallarMorvern · 21/08/2016 18:46

I've always found Clarks last till grown out of, but their brogues don't fit DD. No problem with branded shoes at our school, most wear Vans. I have suggested to DD that she waits and sees, but she says she doesn't care what others are wearing ( and then gets upset when they criticise). Hoping there are less bitchy rich girls at secondary, as her primary was full of them.

Those Ascent shoes would be social suicide in a secondary school in the uk. High school children in Australia have a particular style, but the dc in the uk would not necessarily wish to emulate this.
