Can we have a coat thread?

Perhaps we could share coats we've just bought, planning to buy or simply admiring? When do the main ranges start filtering through? I seem to remember the decent ones selling out in Sept so you have to be quick.

After pregnancy and breastfeeding for years I really need several new - a non frumpy rain mac, a trench? A warm winter every day coat, a couple of flattering smart wool coats (navy and light grey?) and something else lightweight and casual!

Particularly keen to discover lovely wool coats as not found any yet!

Some of the Outdoor brands have become more stylish with their coats and at least you know the fabrics are water/ weatherproof. Cotswold Outdoors and Go Outdoors have some reasonably priced coats in their sales at the moment.

knee-length £55

CadiM · 21/08/2016 12:57

I got my new waterproof coat a couple of days ago and have worn it out in the rain twice already (Scotland is great for testing purposes...). It's this SeaSalt one: Hellsweather. I'm liking it a lot. I toyed with the idea of a warmer coat but last winter was so mild I would have had little use for one, so I'll layer up instead.

FeckTheMagicDragon · 21/08/2016 14:57

I'm not cold blooded - far from it - and I do live Oop North in Yorkshire. Those few degrees make a difference :)

I was pointed at North Face by my SIL (she & my DB are outdoorsy climbing, camping in snow types - unlike me) and they are perfect for the winter here.

Toffeelatteplease · 21/08/2016 16:03

Wholelotoftosie I like that craighoppers coat! It has my missing chest pocket. Do you know whether the cut is alright? I find the cut makes a massive difference.

WholeL0ttaRosie · 21/08/2016 16:36

Toffee I haven't actually seen it in real life. For the last few years I've bought most of my coats from Outdoor shops because I found the High Street fashion chains were selling such impractical fabrics for UK weather.

Last year I got this parka from Cotswold. It's toasty warm and any rain just beads off it but I wouldn't say the cut was amazing and it's not as black as I would like. Merrell seem to be better cut in my experience but the price reflects that, Berghaus have had some good styles last year or so in amongst their cagoules.

DelicatePreciousThing1 · 21/08/2016 16:38

Uniqlo does great down coats.

cheeseandmarmite15 · 21/08/2016 16:51

I'm going to buy didriksons Lina coat in Turtle green for my winter dog walking coat.
I got a navy one last year but fancy a brighter colour this winter!

I have an 8 year old north face coat and a 3 year old Merrell.

I need glamour this year.

CurlsLDN · 21/08/2016 20:03

oot I saw this lovely baby trench on the sale rail in gap yesterday. It's great quality, quite heavy fabric. Sure it cost £20something in my local gap though, so might be worth looking in store if you can

CurlsLDN · 21/08/2016 20:03

*navy trench, not baby!

ootsideinbacktaefront · 22/08/2016 07:02

That looks a nice one thanks. Will pop in.

I am 5ft 7, size 12, big boobs. I love the wrap around ones but think they look like a dressing gown on me!

CallarMorvern · 22/08/2016 09:09

I've had the North Face arctic parka for about 3yrs ( the most I've ever spent on an item of clothing!). I feel the cold badly and it keeps me blissfully warm and dry. It also washes and dries brilliantly. The one thing I don't like about it is the colour, only had the choice of black, brown or white then ( no purple...sob), I have the brown, it's very... erm...brown. But still a fabulous coat and my best ever buy.

CallarMorvern · 22/08/2016 09:11

Oh, and I bought it on the back of a fabulous warm winter coat thread here on S&B. There were some great recomendations on that thread.

user1470840482 · 22/08/2016 12:15

Cadim - that sea salt coat is lovely you linked .

Can I ask how tall you are ? I am quite short and think it would be too long for me :(

QueenofLouisiana · 22/08/2016 13:04

I have a didriksons coat for the depths of winter (East Anglia- the wind bites!). I like Hell Bunny for wool coats which are well cut and have shape to them. I'm in need of help with waist definition and mine really does that.

Mc314 · 22/08/2016 16:49

I want this, but much cheaper

Any ideas?

Mc314 · 22/08/2016 17:17

I'd settle for a bit cheaper

CadiM · 22/08/2016 17:56

user I'm 5'6 and the back touches the back of my knees while the front is about 3-4 inches above the top of my knee cap.

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 22/08/2016 19:00

I'm thinking of getting this one, although I hate next usually they do really good coats.

Can we have a coat thread?
carrielou2007 · 22/08/2016 22:32

I've got a sea salt hellweathers in a light plum/purple colour. It is perfect for walking the school run and the hood stays up whilst pushing a buggy. It's very thin though, bought mine as a spring/summer/Autumn coat. Gets lots of comments but I do feel frumpy in it compared to my Barbours (will be third winter and still looking good I have 3 Grin). As I bought it from outlet at £60 I can bear it.

Have a couple of (again bought at outlet) Joules coats one is called raina 3/4 length waterproof sort of fleece inside feel much much better in and wore last winter. I do love a coat thread as I only work part time so 3 days a week I walk to school/preschool/home, preschool/home, school/home just under 8 miles a day and love a good coat or 5 Grin

doodlejump1980 · 22/08/2016 22:43

Ooooh mc314 that's exactly the coat I'm looking for! Would also prefer it cheaper though!

Mc314 · 22/08/2016 22:54

I could buy it doodlejump80 but I'd have to seriously stick to not buying anything else at all between now and Christmas.
But I don't need anything else..........
Hmm.

It'd be an investment piece right.

The only coats I've seen that I prefer are on the Burberry website funnily enough. Makes the one I linked to seem cheap.

Laquila · 22/08/2016 22:55

CadiM I've been looking at the Hellweathers - is it as shiny as it looks in the photos?

I have a Didriksons Taylor (Best.Coat.Ever.) and a Didriksons Ida, which is great for summer showers and I think will layer up nicely for A/W. It is a bit boring but pulls in at the back with a little button belt to make the fit more flattering and isn't crunchy/crackly cagoule fabric. The hood is also a good size and it packs away pretty small.

I also have a lovely navy double-breasted Whistles wool overcoat with a detachable fur collar, which sadly doesn't get as much wear as the Taylor as it's neither waterproof nor hooded.

Toffeelatteplease · 23/08/2016 07:42

MC314 oooooo I like that coat too. what a shame high street isn't into fitted atm
