Make over reccomendation for dd (almost15)

Recently dd has been looking a right mess. All her friends are into this contouring thing & she's been buying cheap kits & ending up looking like she's either got a dirty face or had an accident with a sun bed.

Dh says if she's going to wear make up she might as well have decent stuff & suggested taking her somewhere to get the right shades etc. I took her to the number 7 counter in the past but she was specifically looking for stage foundation (so a shade darker). I personally don't think she needs foundation for everyday wear especially as she has sensitive skin. It's very clear at the moment but goes blotchy/a bit spotty when she wears too much make up.

Any reccomendations? Her friends are all into MAC but it's a bit beyond our budget.

Benefit are good.

NYX are really good and not too expensive, I work in a salon and the make up artist uses a lot of their stuff. You can get it in bigger boots stores

Also the urban decay naked eyeshadow palettes are absolutely brilliant! They are a bit prices but for a birthday or xmas present you can't go wrong, they last forever! X

Do the have counters at any major shops. Our local boots has just ester Lauder Lancôme Clinique & no 7 but we are going to London soon.

The smaller boots near me doesn't stock any of their products at the moment, but the bigger ones do. You could only get NYX online (American brand) and boots have only recently started selling it (it's the only uk store you can get it from at the minute) so they will probably start putting it out in all their stores soon. They don't have a counter at the one I go to but London is a different story, they may do!

It's more of a reccomendation of a counter she can go to for a makeover I need so she can learn what does & doesn't suit her & how to apply it properly.

i would take her to a big boots and get some estee lauder or something along those lines foundation. if she doesnt need a heavy one bare minerals is good and can sometimes get it reasonable online.

anastacia do a good contour kit and eyebrow pomade. real techniques do good brushes and applicators.

tbh youtube is probably her best bet for tutorials and lots of practice.

not that im a make up expert but it doesnt have to be expensive. nyx and soap and glory both do brilliant items at good prices and in boots likely on 3 for 2.

lanacane anti chaiffe gel is apparently a great primer and anout £7 as opposed to brands that are probs £20 +.

Well I know that the urban decay counters do makeovers...they are a really young and good brand! Maybe she could have it done there for ideas of what suits her, then go to NYX to buy the similar products?

I agree with gingerbreadmanm about the anastasia stuff, they are really good, and also the real techniques brushes! And yes YouTube vids are brilliant for showing how to apply everything properly! I've learnt some brilliant tips from there!

She had real techniques brushes for Xmas but mostly saves them for dance. She has a very colour/brand specific list from school for stage (mostly Rimmell & Max Factor)

That's the general idea though I think MU. Go somewhere for the makeover maybe get the odd thing but then source similar colours cheaper.

I personally don't think she needs foundation, she has good even toned skin but this contouring fad is taking over. I think if done badly it looks awful.

I know a lot of counters etc do a makeover for free and then try to sell you the stuff. I think resisting that might be hard for a 15 year old. It would have been for me anyway.

I'd be tempted to book her a session with an actual make up artist - look on FB for recommendations, ask in a salon. They will often do a cheaper session for teens from what I've seen.

Then there is no pressure to buy as you are paying for the makeover, just tell her to watch closely and then buy similar colours to those the artist used.

Yea I agree, I tend to use powder to contour rather than creams as its more subtle and can just be built up! I tried the bare minerals foundation and it's not heavy at all, then if she wants to wear it it won't be too much, they will do a quick colour match at their counter for you!

the bare minerals starter kit comes with a really good dark brown powder so would be good for contouring too.

i would get her another set of brushes if she cant use them for both. tj hughes and groupon usually have them discounted.

i used a youtube tutorial for winged liner using microporous tape yesterday. nailed it first time. youtube is fab! i would google tutorials associated with the jenner girls as theyre make up is always bang on trend.

Benefit do 4 minis for £15, including highlighter and bronzer which are the main bits for contouring. Real techniques are currently on offer for £10 a set in boots, the contour set has 4 brushes in.

It might be the colours she is using rather than products. If pale you need a light, ashy brown for bronzer. Lots of brilliant tutorials on youtube. Do 14 year olds really have all MAC makeup?

And I was a bit too. Apparently the in colour is a lipstick called velvet teddy?!

My experience was that the women at the MAC and Benefit counters don't know anything about what actually suits people. They just trowel it on and hope to make a sale. I came out looking like a drag queen on both occasions. A make up lesson with a make up artist might be your best bet because they're not selling anything.

To update :

I took her to Bobbi Brown in Covent Garden for a Teen Beauty lesson.

They told her that she doesn't need to contour but can if she likes use a bit of powder bronzer/highlighter as well as blush. They used a very light but very pink colour that suited her beautifully v(she'd been using peaches & rosy colours)

They also just used a tinted moisturiser & nude lips rather than the vibrant pinks that clashed with her skin. They did her eyes nicely with a gold eyeshadow.

She bought the moisturiser but now I could do with finding a cheaper alternative to their Nude Pink blush.
