Classy or slutty?

We had a an important customer visit to our office today - one of the female visitors (late 20s, tall and slim) was wearing a tartan mini-skirt, black opaque tights and shiny patent black pumps. I have tracked down the skirt and it was one of these; www.lookastic.co.uk/women/red-plaid-mini-skirt/shop/topshop-tartan-plaid-skirt-red-4-75373?utm_medium=Referral&utm_source=lookastic.com
I commented to my female colleagues after she left that she looked stunning and stylish - but they (all 5 of them) said she looked tarty/slutty and that it was not a suitable business outfit (I have to admit that it would have been a bit hot today - she travelled 3 hours in the car) - but I think it looked good and I'm thinking of getting same skirt/similar outfit.
What do others think - class or tart?

I think the woman should be able to wear what she likes without scrutiny. Really dislike the "slutty" comments. Not cool

flowery · 11/08/2016 09:11

I think people are forgetting that this is a client, not an employee!

As a client she can wear whatever the hell she likes and should be able to do so without employees of the supplier she is visiting making bitchy comments about her. With tights, a blouse and a jacket it's probably entirely suitable in the cosmetics industry anyway.

I have this one. Its knee length though I have tacked it up for nights out.

Classy or slutty?

I think it's fine for a creative workplace. I find the use of the term slutty offensive.

gilmoregirl · 11/08/2016 11:25

I quite like a mini kilt (Scottish so must be in my blood) personally......

Not overly keen on that particular one but in principle.

Back in my early twenties (late nineties) I had a (very) junior office job. It was a pretty casual open plan office, public sector, not client facing. One day I was taken off to have a private chat with my manager and told that I should no longer wear short skirts as I was distracting the male staff!!!!

The outfits I was wearing were what could be classed as mini skirts but worn with thick opaque tights and polo necks or cardigans and flat heavy shoes. I was quite taken aback and just complied by wearing my one long skirt and one pair of trousers from then on.

So sounds similar to what this woman was wearing only 20 years ago : ( I agree with other posters who have said with flat shoes, right top etc is an acceptable outfit. But then I still like to show a bit of leg and I am over 40 !

wibblewobble8 · 11/08/2016 11:35

I think its fine and certainly appropriate for your work. I think a lot of people on MN are London centric and work in corporate offices etc and forget about the rest of us mere mortals. In fact, i work in an office and have worn similar. Nobody has called me slutty. Mostly because everyone i work with is not a cunt.

DelicatePreciousThing1 · 11/08/2016 15:46

It's inappropriate and unseasonal.

Whathaveilost · 11/08/2016 15:54

It's 'imappropiate' for what Delicate?
As for unseasonal, it's cold and pouring down were I amso that skirt with opaques and a jumper would be perfect today!

WeekendAway · 11/08/2016 16:16

'People cAlling a woman slutty though?'

No one is calling a woman slutty. They are saying the skirt is potentially slutty with the wrong accessories. There's a difference.

Slutty is a very loaded word, would trashy be better? Tarty? Cheap? Common? Unsophisticated?Lacking in class and elegance?

In the end the all mean the same thing and conjure up the same image no we all know what that image is. Let's not get too caught up in semantics. It's just a skirt.

Queenbean · 11/08/2016 16:19

Weekend

But slutty means promiscuous or having sex with lots of people

How can a skirt have sex with lots of people? The wearer can, but a skirt can't

So the skirt cannot be slutty

Actually Queen that is a fairly modern interpretation of the word. Origin
Lay it was used to describe a woman who was sloppy and slovenly around the house and in her personal presentation and who lacked class or grace/grooming/personal standards.

Someone who kept a dirty home would have been described as a slut.

RiverTam · 11/08/2016 16:24

Oh right, so we should always bear in mind the archaic definitions of words we're using in the 21st century? Don't talk nonsense.

PurpleDaisies · 11/08/2016 16:26

Someone who kept a dirty home would have been described as a slut.

Come off it. Almost anyone using it today is calling a woman loose sexually.

CorkieD · 11/08/2016 16:29

Clothes should be appropriate to the occasion and to the season.

Black opaque tights in the month of August is never a good look.

Queenbean · 11/08/2016 16:30

What crap Weekend, clearly no-one is insinuating that wearing a short skirt means that you have a messy home Hmm

Queenbean · 11/08/2016 16:31

Or actually, you're suggesting that as the skirt is being described as slutty, that the skirt has a messy home??!

RiverTam · 11/08/2016 16:33

God, that's so dictatorial! Can you really not see that? You remind me of all the mothers who, for some reason, when I was a gothy teenager, seemed to find it really upsetting that I wore black all year round. Luckily my own mother wasn't so tiresomely rigid in her thinking.

This thread is really depressing, so many women colluding in enforcing outdated and rigid rules on other women and making negative judgements about another woman's appearance. In 2016.

RiverTam · 11/08/2016 16:33

That was to Corkie.

Whathaveilost · 11/08/2016 16:43

The seasons are so blended now I think it is more important to go by what the weather is actually doing!
I was on a training course this morning and people were in Opaqaues and boots because that was appropriate to the conditions.
They would have looked daft in t shirts and sun dresses ( and would have been uncomfortable and freezing)

Other people also used umbrellas and had rain coats on today, that's not very seasonal either but was appropriate as well

Nellyphants · 11/08/2016 16:45

This is a very interesting thread. A friend wore a skirt like this last Christmas. It really didn't do anything for her. She asked me for my honest opinion. We were already on a night out, what would you have said?

Whathaveilost · 11/08/2016 16:53

nelly. In that situation I always say something vague but honest, like 'hmm, it's ok but I've seen you in better, I really love you in that......whatever'

taybert · 11/08/2016 17:40

I'd have called her a slut but complimented her on her seasonal opaques.

burnishedsilver · 11/08/2016 17:53

Not classy.

6 of you saw it and 5 of the 6 said it's not suitable for your area of work. Bear that in mind if you plan on wearing it to the office.

It reminds me of a Britney Spears outfit from 15 years ago.

Nellyphants · 11/08/2016 17:57

She was wearing torn fish nets. I went with the I prefer your green dress
