How to moisturise without looking oily

Hi all you beauty experts, I am 52 with good skin, I would say it has always been normal, but now heading towards dry. My problem is if I use a moisturiser suitable for my skin, my makeup doesn't last, and if I use a light moisturiser, my makeup looks dry,. I've tried using serums and primers but it doesn't seem to make any difference, does anybody have any ideas?

Following.... (I'm in need of a solution as well)

I use my usual serum and Moisture Surge on top and I skip the moisturiser in the Summer.
Sometimes I use the tiniest bit of oil after serum and before MS.

Do you wait before putting your makeup on? You might want to leave some time.

Also, if you're are using the wrong primer it can do more damage than good.

Hi, yes I do wait, I usually cleanse and moisturise, then get dressed etc and do makeup 5-10 mins later. I have a cupboard full of skincare and makeup, usually elemis skincare, and I variety of lotions and potions I've been lured into trying, trying a bodyshop serum at the moment. Foundation wise, I have boujois healthy mix, revlin colourstay, chanel vitalumiere (which is OK, but not as good as the hype). The ones that last look dry and cakey, the ones I like, with a medium coverage don't last. So is it my make up or my skincare, not sure?

What moisturiser do you use?

I usually use Elemis, not now in Summer though, and very often Healthy Mix Serum, so am puzzled.

Maybe you are using too much product?

Then again, some foundations do look cake anyway, anything that's designed to stay will be drier and cake-y.

Any recommendations for primer, I have two teenage beauty addict, so chances are anything u suggest they may have.

Bodyshop do a primer called Wonderblur that might suit you. Apply after moisturiser has sunk in and it absorbs any excess oil, mattifying your skin.
It also blurs fine lines and pores so you won't need to apply so much foundation.

Great I'll give the body shop one a try. Does anyone find with primers that you use less product, but end up with less coverage?

It left my oily, yet dehydrated, forty something year old skin looking absolutely awful.
I have the same problems as you OP, and thought this was the answer to my prayers.
My make up looked dry and cakey (no7 stay perfect, max factor ) and my pores looked humongous.
I looked horrible

Much prefer this primer, and this moisturiser underneath.

Do you not use the elemis flash balm?

I'm definitelygoing to try the snail gel.

First three ingredients need to be Aqua glycerin then a silicone - eg dimethicone or cyclo....etc!
Will be moisturising and mattifying

I don't use a moisturiser, instead about x2/3 per week, I apply a facial oil and leave it for a few minutes then just wipe off all the excess with a cotton pad.

I find that keeps my skin really hydrated. I've tried a range of primers and quite like MAC but also really like No 7 BB cream for normal/oily. Has factor 15 and blends so well I (on days where I might not be bothering with other make-up) can blend it with no mirror and no visible lines. Skin not totally matt with it (which I think is unflattering anyway) but never looks greasy. Often No 7 have 3 for 2 as well.

I love the snail gel, soothes and smooths my skin beautifully. Gives it a bit of a glow, but still lovely and light in this weather.

I also put it on top of moisturiser as well at night, or after a bit of grapesseed oil.

So do you use the snail gel instead of a moisturiser or do I replace my serum with the gel, and then moisturise

I do use the snail gel as a moisturiser mostly, under my make up, before my primer. My rosacea /sensitive at times/oily yet dehydrated skin loves it. It also doesn't leave me looking too shiny.

At night times, I will use it over my serum and moisturiser, to seal all the moisture in.
