Tint / highlights q

I have my hair (once darkish, now salt and pepper ) tinted and highlighted. I used to have the tint "combed through" (hope this is the right term) but then my hair went too dark. Then I tried only tinting the roots but the condition looks worse that when I did the combing through thing. What in God's name is the answer?? Any hairdressers or less hopeless grey foxes about????

I have my roots tinted ash brown and highlights/balayage highlights, had head once every 4-6 months
I do the roots myself in between
All looks ok!
