Happy Birthday, Crem.

In crime I am very fond of Donna Leon - all set in Venice & I love Brunettti, her detective as he is neither a misogonist nor an alcoholic! She's written about 20 books in the series and (so often the case) the earlier ones are the best.

I also like Barbara Nadal's Inspector Ikmen series - all set in Istanbul. He's another sympa chap!

D (ha!)H is luckly to be alive this morning. He has an appointment & set his alarm for 7am. Only the eejit set it for midnight & it went off about 20 mins after I'd gone to sleep. To pile on the misery he didn't turn it off properly & the snooze alarm went off about 10 mins later, just as I was drifting off again. Angry Much coffee is needed this morning!

Stropperella · 10/08/2016 08:38

Happy, happy birthday, Crem. Wishing you a wonderful day, spent doing lovely things.

MI, many congrats!

Herbs, any news?

GGG, glad your hols proved restorative. Sorry to hear about the difficult situation with your mum. Is she still in hospital?

Here, dd has upped the ante by getting herself into a whole new big mess. As if her life next week wasn't already going to be stressful enough. Can't talk about it, but wish me strength, crepeys!

bigTillyMint · 10/08/2016 08:47

Happy Birthday Cremo! WineCakeFlowers

Oh shit Stropps Sad

Dreamqueen · 10/08/2016 08:55

happy birthday Crem

MontserratCaballe · 10/08/2016 09:08

Sending you strength, StroppsFlowersFlowers

Rudy, yes please I would love it. Will pm you now.

Rosebag · 10/08/2016 09:58

Hello all. A huge happy birthday to crem Cake Wine and here's hoping you have a lovely day and lots of partying.

Sorry it's such a rollercoaster ride with DD Stropps Flowers Talk to us when you feel able Flowers

MM snooze buttons are the devils work...

GGG sorry about your DM...it's hard when they're ill but relations are strained. I guess it might be best to be guided by her. Glad Suffolk was good. I'm back in the smoke from Monday....could fancy another north London MU...

BD I won't be around this weekend but will be thinking of you and the family. Flowers

Crepeys, you put me to shame with how well read you all are. I must admit to loving the sequel to Me Before You at the moment called not surprisingly, After You. And all JoJo Moyes in general. Blush

Cooler today but very sunny! DD and I are braving the southern rail strike and attempting to get to Worthing. I have to admit that DD 24/7 is getting a bit much. However she's got back into her jigsaws (1000 piece and above) having refused for a long time, plus various art work. It's just that when I just want to sit in the beach cafe reading, which is my idea of heaven....she keeps saying 'what shall we do now ?' Angry Not one of my DC reads for pleasure Sad

motherinferior · 10/08/2016 10:02

Magi, a good jury will let you off. Stropps, major strength.

Crime: Elly Griffiths is terrific. I am also rather partial to a new series by a chap called Abir Mukherjee set in Calcutta in 1919. (And as EG is the first one who likes my chunk of novel and AM also has just sent me an email alleging he likes it, I am now even bigger fans of theirs.)

I'd also recommend Antonia Hodgson's Devil in the Marshalsea and its successor. Historical crime.

Molly and I are partial to a spot of Liane Moriarty and ooh Moll, I've got her newest as a review copy...

I know I am showing off re the writing but it is most heartening.

BeachysSandyFlipFlops · 10/08/2016 10:27

Happy birthday Crem WineCakeFlowers, welcome to the club.....may your crepes be crispy.

Stropps sorry to hear about dd getting herself into more scrapes. Here ds had a very good day yesterday and has been packed off to a course today (which I really really didn't think he would make it to!). In fact, I'm home ALL ALONE as all dc are gone and being catered for today. Can't think what to do with myself - more decluttering I think!

Collymollypuff · 10/08/2016 10:39

Happy birthday, Crem! Cake Hope you have a wonderful day. Wine

Let me know what you think of the new Liane Moriarty, MI. I must try Elly Griffiths. I am dreading Results Day next week and I may go into hiding. Am currently thinking I can't fucking bear it if she has to take a gap year and stay in my hair all fucking year just when I thought I'd be teen-free.

herbaceous · 10/08/2016 10:42

Happy birthday lovely Cremo! May your day be filled with delight, and plenty of places to sit down. Plus, gin.

Strength to Stropps. Maybe Jesus can imbue you with spiritual fortitude.

Here am wondering whether/when I should go and see mum. I want to coincide with a doctor doing the rounds, but no-one seems to know when this may be. I also have a feature to write within the next three days. This is not insurmountable, but there are many shifting factors to be taken into account. Getting a bit tired of shifting factors. Want at least one thing to stay still for a bit.

Mum's physio has a theory that her pain is dementia-related (i.e., she has zero tolerance). I am not convinced. Firstly because any dementia she has is not THAT bad, and secondly because if that were the case then surely residual pain from the knee op would also be a problem, and it isn't. And thirdly as I can't find anything to back this up from the first page of google searches.

motherinferior · 10/08/2016 11:09

Herbs, it looks to me from this as if it isn't particularly relevant in any case. I can't find any link either. Frankly if it were an issue the Alzheimer's Society would be all on it.

OK, there is a bit

though the findings are also variable

So yes, there might be something in it but that's not really the point.

THANK YOU LOVELY CREPEYS
I have had a Skype with a very hungover dd, and a good chat with dm, ddad and dsis. It is a beautiful day here and we are about to have s picnic lunch on the banks of the Charente.

Cremolafoam · 10/08/2016 11:37

By the way, any casual onlooker or lurker may think we are all a bunch of avid Christians , with our constant references to miracle cures and Jesus. Hallelujah!
Grin
In style news , I am warming to new haircut, which will be easier to tend to.

Herbs, I hope you can get some sense out of the hospital soon. I know it is notoriously difficult to pin people down. I might look at the name of the doc she is under, which should be written up behind the bed, and put a call through the hospital, admin number to Dr soandso's secretary. Ask them to call you back? You have to be a bit ingenious sometimes , to get anywhere.

Is it too early for sparkling Vouvray do you think?

motherinferior · 10/08/2016 11:43

Cremo, on a lady's 50th it is never too early for Vouvray.

OP posts:
bigTillyMint · 10/08/2016 11:50

Molly Grin re the gap year! Sympathies - I may be saying the same in a years time Wink

Herbs, Grin re plenty of places to sit down!

Cremo, sounds like you've had a lovely day so far Smile

bigTillyMint · 10/08/2016 11:51

Just the right time for a Vouvray here, Cremo! In fact I reckon it's beer o'clock right now Smile

herbaceous · 10/08/2016 11:59

It's never too early for Vouvray, birthday or not. In fact, I'm thinking of Turning to Drink as a long-term solution to life.

Had been planning to go and see mum this afternoon, after new fridge freezer was delivered this morning, as promised. But they've changed the delivery slot to this afternoon, scuppering that plan. It's too far to get there and back in a morning. And no doubt wouldn't coincide with the Sainted Doctor's appearance.

In weight management news, a week of eating parma ham, cheese, mozzarella, tomatoes, salad, potatoes, cake and vast quantities of wine has resulted in a weight gain of 0 (zero, 0) pounds. Brava.

bigTillyMint · 10/08/2016 12:05

Herbs, is your DH back at work already?!
Well done on no weight gain.
I didn't weigh myself before I went so I will have to guess when I get back.

herbaceous · 10/08/2016 12:34

No, DH doesn't start his new job until 19th. But he has various meetings, charity stuff, etc, which means he's in and out. Tonight, however, he's going to sample gins with our neighbour on a narrowboat in Camden. Dread to think what kind of condition he'll be in later.

Blackduck · 10/08/2016 14:03

Cremo Happy Birthday.

Stropps much strength.....

Here the laptop woes continue and I don't have the patience...,

herbaceous · 10/08/2016 14:33

Well well. I just spoke to an actual helpful person at the hospital - the ward sister. She looked up everything on the computer, told me what tests had been done, results if any, future action if any, and even the name of the consultant! Most reassuring. I was effusively grateful.

Naturally, two things cannot go even slightly right on the same day. The new FF arrived with a bent corner, meaning the door cannot be rehung to 'our' side. So they took it away. We've got to start the process again to get a new replacement one. FFS.

bigTillyMint · 10/08/2016 14:52

Angry for you Herbs.
Well done on the fact-finding re DM. Any further forward on why so many meds?
